About this project
FOURTH STRETCH GOAL ANNOUNCED! Free all-new fully illustrated The Call of Cthulhu book by Gianni with 100 pencil drawings to all Kickstarter supporters who pledge $50 or more if we reach our Stretch Goal #4, 80K goal! See stretch goal section below for full details and for more sample art.
Welcome to our Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea Studio Edition Kickstarter campaign! Written by Mike Mignola and Gary Gianni, and with art by Gary Gianni, this Studio Edition version of the book will be given the full deluxe treatment.
“Gary is a genius. And not just a regular kind of genius, but a very specific type of genius—the kind you think of when you want someone to draw and co-write a ghost and monster story that takes place on a ship and you want it to look like it was done in 1902. Come to think of it he’s the only guy you think of when you want something like that. He’s THAT kind of genius.”
"After many years of talking about Moby Dick, the book and the film, Victorian ghost stories, comics, folklore and history in general, Mike Mignola, Hellboy and I embarked on graphic novel adventure entitled Into the Silent Sea. The story begins with Hellboy marooned in the Sargasso Sea and ends in that misty inexplicable realm where classic tales of horror usually wind up. I count myself among the many fans who wish Mignola will write and draw more Hellboy stories exclusively someday, but in the meantime, I hope our combined effort will thrill you a little and chill you a little…"
This book will showcase Gary Gianni's thumbnails, pencil preliminaries, and the final art--all meticulously reproduced direct from the original art. It will also include notes throughout written by Gary that give you an intimate look into the making of this graphic novel. Additionally, Gary writes about working with Mike Mignola to give rare insight into the creative process.

Stretch Goal 4 -- FREE GIANNI SIGNED BOOK WITH 100 PENCIL DRAWINGS!
Free fully illustrated The Call of Cthulhu book by Gianni to all Kickstarter supporters who pledge $50 or more if we reach our Stretch Goal #4, 80K goal! The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft comes illustrated with over one hundred pencil drawings by Gary Gianni. This 96 page paperback book will be 6 x 9.125 inches. All copies come signed by Gianni.
A few years ago, Gary Gianni began to work on a personal project; a fully illustrated edition of one of Lovecraft’s most highly regarded texts, The Call of Cthulhu. Gary Completed a full mock-up of the book by heavily designing the story with approximately 100 pencil drawings in preparation for the pen and ink finishes. Despite his intentions to complete the book, (George R.R. Martin wanted Gary to work on a small project of his!) and in spite of all the pencil work, it was set aside and never came to fruition. Now we have a unique opportunity to see this version in a beautifully produced book.
In addition, Gary is refining the design and many of the drawings to make this bonus book even more special. With your help we can give you this version as a free bonus for supporting the Kickstarter campaign with a pledge of $50.00 or more!
UNLOCKED -- Stretch Goal 1 -- We are increasing the page count of the book by 32 pages! We are including an additional section that features the rarely seen Gary Gianni's MonsterMen story A Gift for the Wicked that was originally published in the Hellboy Christmas Special in 1997. Each page of the story will be represented by its original art page and preliminary pencil art. The cover art by Gianni and additional pin-ups and drawings will be added as well.
UNLOCKED -- Stretch Goal #2 -- We are adding a second 8 x 10 inch print to all pledges of $50 or more! This print will be of Gary's favorite pencil preliminary of page 6 to Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea.
UNLOCKED -- Stretch Goal #3 -- We are adding a third 8 x 10 inch print to all pledges of $50 or more! This print will feature a Sherlock Holmes drawing by Gary.
Add-on anything to anything! An Add-On lets you pledge for more than one tier by adding the price of any additional tier to your existing pledge. Say you want to include an extra book or print? Simply add-on an additional $50 to your pledge and let us know. You will also need to double the shipping charge. If you have any questions we are here to help.
You can expect to receive your pledges by March 2018. Since the designs for the books and prints are nearly completed we will send them to the printer within a couple of weeks after the campaign ends if we hit our goal. It takes a few weeks to order the book and print materials, then approximately three months for everything to be printed, then to be delivered to us. We will ship them to everyone immediately upon their arrival at our Flesk warehouse in Santa Cruz, CA.
All items shipped within the U.S.A. are by USPS Mail and will include tracking. The items shipped to our international friends usually take 3 weeks for delivery, but can sometimes take up to 3-6 weeks depending on the country. We know that shipping overseas is very expensive and we wish it was cheaper, too! We help by subsidizing some of the cost. We make no money from the shipping.
Gary's Thoughts on John Fleskes.
John Fleskes has always charted his own course. He single-handedly built a publishing company based on his passion for illustrated books. The first book he printed, fifteen years ago, was Franklin Booth: Painter With a Pen. Upon opening the cover you get the sense the book was created for only 2 people, you, and Fleskes himself. That personal quality which Fleskes commits to every one of his projects gives him a reputation as a man devoted to his craft. Generally, these sorts of high standards are only reserved for artists, brew masters and vintners.
I have worked with Fleskes on many books and always likened him to a Captain of a fine sailing vessel. Herman Melville wrote, “It’s better to sail with a moody good captain than a laughing bad one.” Well… Fleskes isn’t moody but he is good. And Melvilles’ book, Moby Dick, might have been more highly regarded in its day if it were first published by John Fleskes!
John's Thoughts on Gary Gianni
I've had the privilege to work with Gary Gianni on five previous book projects released by Flesk, along with numerous other opportunities to assist in other areas with him over these last 15 years. Gary is the one of the greatest guys who you can ever have the good fortune to meet, and he just so happens to be one of the best artists around. It's my honor to work alongside him, and to have the blessings of Mike Mignola to bring you all this Studio Edition of Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea.
About Gary Gianni
Gary Gianni began as an illustrator for the newspapers and as a courtroom artist for television. He has received the Eisner and Spectrum awards and illustrated books by authors ranging from Melville and Stevenson to Robert E. Howard, Michael Chabon and Ray Bradbury. His comics include the Shadow with Michael Kaluta, Batman with Archie Goodwin, Tom Strong with Alan Moore and Indiana Jones. He is also known for his own occult detective mystery comic book, The MonsterMen. For eight years he drew the syndicated newspaper comic strip Prince Valiant with Mark Schultz.
More recently, Gianni has worked with George R. R. Martin and produced a Song of Ice and Fire calendar as well as illustrations for the author’s novel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Now, teaming up with Mike Mignola, Gianni has crafted Hellboy’s newest graphic novel Into The Silent Sea.
Why use Kickstarter
A message from the Publisher, John Fleskes: What Kickstarter offers is the opportunity to create and do what we love, while connecting and giving back to our supporters in a personal way. This makes the process much more enjoyable than if we simply worked behind closed doors. It is also gratifying to have the opportunity to continually add value to the project through stretch goals. I've never felt that we are making products. Instead, we are making unique art books and prints. This is done with great care to best allow us to showcase Gianni's art in a way that we can be proud of. We hope that you will cherish them just as much as we do.

Risks and challenges
Why you should trust Flesk Publications? John Fleskes answers:
I pride myself on having a fifteen year record of delivering over eighty books of the highest quality. I've run seven previous Kickstarter campaigns, with Brom, Frank Cho, J.A.W. Cooper, Petar Meseldzija, Richard and Wendy Pini, Mark Schultz, and Daren Bader and Lance HaunRogue. Most of these have been on time. We are very open with our backers and communicate through updates often to keep you up to date.
In some cases, things don't always go exactly as planned in the publishing world. Much of the time they do, but sometimes an unexpected problem or delay arises. In the rare case that this happens, simply put, I deal with it and find a way to get the job done. I am very open about any challenges and like to share in the process so people know what's going on. I don't like surprises, and don't feel anyone else should either. I respect the artist, and our supporters too much to let them down. The good thing is that I've published over eighty books and I know how to get them shipped and delivered, and I know how to manage a schedule and keep projects on track, and I will stay motivated and energized to get the books into your hands when I said I would.
I can't thank everyone enough who has supported us before. You directly help us to make these beautiful books.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
