The Bee Book! It's an interactive folding pop-up children's book that has a unique hexagonal structure inspired by the shape of honey-combs! Its pieces flip out and unfold into different layers of hexagons and diamonds that act as its “pages” and contain colorful, realistic illustrations of the six families of bees found in North America and the flowers they are attracted to. Nestled amongst the illustrative flora are fun facts which describe how these bees go about pollinating flowers, why they are drawn to specific flowers, and how different flavors of honey occur naturally based on the kinds of flowers involved in the process.
Mass amounts of Bees are dying all over the Earth due to pesticides called neonicotinoids being sprayed over fruits and vegetables. They are absorbed by the plants, making them toxic for Bees and other insects. High doses are deadly, but even low doses of the chemical impairs the ability of the bees to navigate, disorienting them until they eventually become too weary to function. With the loss of contribution from even some of its workers the hive can suffer and die, making bee colonies vulnerable to chemicals in the environment.
Given the bee population's recent severe decline of 30% in the United States alone, it is important for everyone, especially the younger generation, to learn about bees and why they are so important to our ecosystem. Bees are responsible for pollinating the plants that provide the majority of the world's fruits and vegetables, and who wants to live in a world without natural food and pretty flowers?!?
The very structure of the book is a learning opportunity as it incorporates a great deal of geometry and mathematical thought. By seeing how basic shapes move and fold in space, the brain will be more apt to understand how two-dimensional shapes relate to the physical world. Exposing children to this sort of stimuli at a young age could increase their likelihood to comprehend and enjoy math classes later in their education. The interactive design of the book also makes it fun to read as a group. Share it with your friends and family and you can take turns reading as you explore the wonderful world of bees.
The Bee Book will rest in a honey-comb shaped box for safe transport and storage. Information about our current bee crisis will be located on the inside cover of the box lid. The book will also come with an accordion-style instruction booklet showing how it opens layer by layer, so that its contents are easily accessible. Overall, The Bee Book shares important knowledge about bees through illustrious images and innovative design. It incorporates elements of art, geometry, engineering, and environmentalism, and can help awaken interests in these topics in both children and adults.
This book is the most complex, conceptually creative book that we have collaborated on so far and we like to think of it as our synergistic brain-child; greater than the sum of its parts. We have poured our passion, thought, love, skill, and energy into creating this magical book that is both intellectually and visually stimulating. Our book is really something special and we believe in its ability to change the future of book-design and the learning process. The experience of opening the book fills us with an sense of joy and wonder each time we take it out of the box, and we want to share that feeling with you!! Check out our rewards, donate to the production of our book, and be a part of something that's buzzing with love and creativity!
Using plants we gathered on walks through the wilderness and our knowledge of the flowers bees are attracted to, we have illustrated and created a beautiful poster to go along with our book! Humming with bold graphics and vibrant colors, this 18" by 24" poster gathers elements of The Bee Book and depicts them in one inviting scene.
In addition to a poster, we have taken some of the illustrations from the center of our book and created cute little stickers with inspirational words to lighten and brighten your day! There are 6 different designs which come as a set and are sure to make you and your friends smile.
The majority of the money raised will go to die-cutting, printing, and assembling our unique book. This is because the structure of our book is more elaborate and complex (and more fun) than the structure of ordinary books, making it more costly to produce. Another large portion of the money raised will be used to cover the cost of shipping - we want to make sure our books safely arrive to you! Smaller sums of money will be used to print fun things like stickers and posters, as well as 10% for Kickstarter and payment processing fees.
Risks and challenges
The challenges that we face after The Bee Book is successfully funded present themselves in the areas of printing and shipping. Due to the complex nature of constructing this fascinating, innovative book, it will take about 5 weeks to print and assemble them all. We are having the books produced in Hong Kong so it will take a little over a month to have them all shipped to us and for us to mail them all to you! All long-distance shipping has some inherent risk, and unforeseen complications could result in the delayed delivery of the books. If any issues arise, we will keep you updated and will do our best to get them to you as fast as we can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
