About this project
24 Hour Flowers: inside of an old, rusty clock thrive 8 species of flowers that all have one thing in common: their blooms only last for one day! Prepare for a journey full of new botanical knowledge and breathtaking illustrations. As you explore four families of fascinating yet fleeting flora growing thick through the clock gears of this 12-sided book, you will learn new facts about each one, what makes them the same, and what makes them different.
While the idea of a one-day blossom may evoke images of rare exotic species, in fact many common local flowers bloom for only one day-- many of them bloom in rapid succession so you might not notice that each individual flower is only open for one day. All the species featured in 24 Hour Flowers are common in North America, and likely could be found in your own yard or garden.
24 Hour Flowers is a celebration of fleeting flora, but it also functions as an educational tool to learn about plant taxonomy, or how plants are arranged into families. First, the book divides bilaterally into monocotyldons on the left and dicotyldons on the right-- the most basic distinction in classifying plants. These two sections are each sub-divided into two families, a garden grows amongst clock gears, and within each family two species are featured for a total of 8 blooms growing from the center of the book.
The very structure of the book is a learning opportunity as it incorporates a great deal of geometry and mathematical thought. By seeing how basic shapes move and fold in space, the brain will be more apt to understand how two-dimensional shapes relate to the physical world. Exposing children to this sort of stimuli at a young age could increase their likelihood to comprehend and enjoy math classes later in their education. The interactive design of the book also makes it fun to read as a group. Share it with your friends and family and you can take turns reading as you explore the wonderful world of flowers.
This 8.5"x8.5" sticker sheet comes with a whopping 13 stickers! Featuring all 8 flowers from the book, a large 24 Hour Flowers gear, and 4 Foliage Library logos– one for each season of the year.
Get one or get them all! Four of the flowers from 24 Hour Flowers come to life in this set of pop-up cards that is almost as exciting as the book itself!
Flower of the Month Club
Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to sign up for our Flower of the Month Club! This is the reward that keeps on giving as you will receive a 6"x8" print of a new, original flower illustration every month from June 2017 - May 2018.
This book was designed and built to house a central pop-up clock element, while still encompassing The Foliage Library theme that the shape of the book relates conceptually to its content. Its pages unfold upwards and outwards from two heavyweight, reinforced bases, which also act as the front and back covers of the book when it is shut. 24 Hour Flowers closes about its central hinge and is securely shut with a paper belt for safe transport and storage. Overall, 24 Hour Flowers shares important knowledge about the structure of plants through illustrious images and innovative design. It incorporates elements of art, geometry, engineering, and environmentalism, and can help awaken interests in these topics in both children and adults.
Matt and Emily became friends their freshman year at the Rochester Institute of Technology, bonding over a strong interest in botany and love of books. Throughout the course of their friendship they started making books together- their first experiment being a octagonal book titled Sunflowers and Moonflowers. This first book effectively served as a catalyst to their collaborative creations, and soon thereafter they created The Bee Book, which was a Kickstarter success in June of 2015. While that book was still hot off the press Matt and Emily had ideas for two more books, a decagonal book (10 sides) called Daisies and Dandelions, and a dodecagonal book (12 sides) called 24 Hour Flowers. Matt was especially inspired by the idea of a book geared by time and developed a pop-up clock mechanism to rest in the center of the book. Enthralled by this, Emily began researching flowers that only bloom for one day, and the project took off! After months of hard work and perseverance, 24 Hour Flowers is complete and ready to be enjoyed by you!
Over the past two years since the successful Kickstarter Campaign of our first creation, The Bee Book, we have been hard at work expanding and legally protecting our book designs by patenting them. Upon beginning this process we were informed that we may want to hire a patent-illustrator to render our books in the appropriate format, but seeing as we are both prolific illustrators with a knack for problem-solving, we figured- "let's do it ourselves!" Over 70 illustrations later, we successfully submitted a very long patent application which shows in-detail how each of our books folds and functions.
When you support this new project, 24 Hour Flowers, you are not only getting a beautifully illustrated, innovative product but also supporting our small business, helping us continue to grow and expand our operations and bring even more new and exciting books to you in the future!
Risks and challenges
The challenges that we face after 24 Hour Flowers is successfully funded present themselves in the areas of printing and shipping. Due to the complex nature of constructing this fascinating, innovative book, it will take about 5 weeks to print and assemble them all. We are having the books produced in Hong Kong so it will take about two months to have them all shipped to us and for us to mail them all to you! All long-distance shipping has some inherent risk, and unforeseen complications could result in the delayed delivery of the books. If any issues arise, we will keep you updated and will do our best to get them to you as fast as we can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
