I’m an artist asking for funding for materials to build an environmental public art project called Trash Tower. Each week I’ll collect trash along a two mile circuit in my hometown, Newbury, MA. I’ll clean it and place it in the tower where it’ll stay until the tower is filled.
the materials for the trash tower
Four Posts: 6 feet x 6 feet x 16 feet all heart western red cedar
Four Lexan panels 12 feet x 3 feet
Cover and Lock
Ladder (Every Tuesday I’ll be placing the litter I collect into the tower.)
the materials for the signboard
MDO plywood ¾” primed 4 feet x 6 feet
My local school district, Triton Regional, has given me permission to site the trash tower and signboard on a busy street in front of the elementary school. Carpentry students from Whittier Vocational Technical Regional High School will build the tower, and art students will design the signboard.
Curriculum ideas: I’ve created activities in art, mathematics, reading, science, and writing for Newbury Elementary Students. These will enhance their understanding of litter, decomposition, and recycling.
It's hard to predict how long it will take the tower to fill. That's part of the adventure -- seeing it change week by week.
Risks and challenges
I’ve been working on the trash tower project for more than 2 years.
Will those who agreed to help during the 2013-2014 school year still be available and supportive for the 2014-2015 school year?
Will I be able to climb the ladder in the winter to throw litter into the trash tower?
