Stretch Goals Reached! We're Adding More Murals and A Beer Garden Back Bar!
First we reached $30,000 in just four days with the support of 294 incredible backers. Then we reached $40,000 with the help of 408 backers to add additional murals throughout our beer garden. And then we crossed the $50,000 line because 522 amazing people believed in bringing this project to life, so we'll be adding an outdoor back bar. Thank you so much!
Temescal Brewing: A New Oakland Brewery, Taproom, and Beer Garden
Temescal Brewing is a production brewery, taproom, and beer garden opening this spring in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, California. We've been working like mad for nearly two years, doing all sorts of things like designing and constructing our interior, hosting art shows, sponsoring nonprofit fundraisers, and changing our name from New Normal Brewing. All of this and more to create something larger than ourselves through our passion for fresh beer. Now that we're very, very close to opening our doors, we could really use your support to ensure our beer garden is especially special. We've got a small budget to do the bare minimum outside, but with a donation at any level, you’re helping us build an outstanding neighborhood space for everyone to enjoy. For all the tremendous support we've received from our community already: Thank You!
Oakland is incredible. This city has 261 sunny days a year, more working artists per capita than anywhere else in the U.S., and a heart of solid gold. We're a team of passionate brewers and community builders, doing our part to bring more Good Vibes to the city we love. Temescal Brewing will be a hub of imagination: a place where our neighbors and the local arts community can feel at home and come to enjoy our delicious beers.
Finding the perfect location in Temescal—on Telegraph Ave. next to MacArthur BART station—was a dream come true. Early on, we hosted some bumping local art shows and nonprofit fundraisers to share our beer and meet our neighbors. More recently, we've started construction, cramming a gorgeous, comically large production brewery inside our building, complete with a cozy, modern taproom.
Outside is where things really get exciting. We're creating the freshest-of-the-fresh beer garden: the global center for simple daylong hangs, and a beacon of hope for wandering souls seeking Sunny Vibes.
In addition to being the backbone of everyday Good Times, expect our space to host a constant procession of food trucks, special beer releases, community events, and art shows.
We brew a wide variety of styles, with a focus on Sunny Day drinking: soft, sessionable, and refreshing pales, pilsners, and saisons. We maintain a laser focus on water chemistry and fermentation—a passion for the little things that you'll taste in every pint. But boozy, dank stout and IPA drinkers shouldn't worry; we'll also brew plenty of bigger, darker beers. The sun does go down, after all.
We'll offer pints, tasters, and to-go growlers in our taproom and beer garden. Temescal beer will also be on draft at your favorite Oakland bar, and eventually we'll do some very special can and bottle releases.
Brewing will be in the exceptionally capable hands of Wade Ritchey, most recently assistant brewer at Cellarmaker, a top-rated brewery in San Francisco that puts out some incredible beers. Wade’s wide-ranging experience also includes Hill Farmstead in Vermont, Brasserie Thiriez in France, and Birrificio Italiano in Italy. Wade's an incredibly talented brewer and we are so lucky to bring his beers to Temescal.
We've created some neat rewards to show our thanks for your donation. A few things to note:
- When our campaign ends, our lovely friends at BackerKit will follow up to be sure you get exactly the rewards you want, where you want them. And they'll give you the opportunity to add rewards too tasty to offer here.
- We're adding a logo sticker to every reward package above $10, because who doesn't love a good sticker.
- When all our rewards are ready, we'll host a Good Times Sunny Vibes reward pick-up fiesta for all our local supporters. Come claim your rewards, be among the first to try our beers, and meet some new pals. We'll announce that date as soon as we know it and all our donors are welcome!
- Designs are subject to change from the sample images below, but we think you'll like what we come up with in the end.
Introducing "Temescal Vibes," included in our Pin Set, Sticker Sheet, and Illustrated T-shirt rewards. The iconic Temescal lamppost banners (RIP), the MacArthur BART sign letting you know Good Vibes are just around the corner, and your own Sunny Day pal are just three of the many designs coming your way.
What Will We Do with Your Money?
Build a super sweet beer garden, of course!
Creating a terrific neighborhood hangout spot takes a lot of work and care. We have budget enough to make our outdoor space usable. But with your help, we can go above and beyond our basic needs, making sure Temescal Brewing's outdoor space represents the thriving, creative spirit of our neighborhood.
$30,000 was our minimum goal to outfit the beer garden with lots of comfy furniture, lush plants, stringy string lights, and a mural from a local artist along our new back fence. Because we raised $40,000, we're able to add even more murals, covering our building's side wall with stunning work from local artists. And now that we've surpassed $50,000, we’ll be able to add an amazing outdoor bar just for the beer garden. Perfect for sunny day hangs. From here, the sky's the limit. The more we raise, the more fun we can have creating the beer garden of your dreams.
You Donated, Now What?
Now do us a big favor: “Like” Temescal Brewing on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, sign up for our email list, and most importantly, tell your friends about our campaign. What Good Vibes go around, come around! Thank you again for all of your support, pals—you're seriously the best.
Risks and challenges
Starting any new business has its hurdles. Our lease is secure, our City and State permits have been filed, construction is well underway, and our financing outside of Kickstarter is complete. However, we want you to be aware of these risks that could possibly delay our opening:
If the City or State departments cannot issue our final permits, which is highly unlikely, we’ll work together with them to understand the issues until we receive their go-ahead. If our general contractor discovers an unforeseen construction issue, we’ll delay completion until everything meets our quality and safety standards - it’s worth it. You’ll taste the difference in our beers.
We’re doing our best to open by May or sooner. But with so many moving parts, it’s possible we’ll experience some delay. We’ll keep you posted throughout our process and, most importantly: We look forward to welcoming you into Temescal Brewing as soon as we can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
