About this project
GIRL MEETS BIKE is a motorcycle movie for our generation, replacing the Beatnik alienation of THE WILD ONE and 60s drug culture of EASY RIDER with a young woman's very intimate quest for personal freedom.
STORY SYNOPSIS - When Kat buys her first motorcycle with her wedding dress money, she moves away from her controlling fiancé into a circle of motorcycle friends who are attracted but threatened by her new found sexual freedom.
As she learns to ride, her new friends vie for her affection with offers of riding advice and mechanical assistance. But what do they mean? Are they subtle forms of control? Or crucial knowledge, without which she might get herself killed?
Ignoring all warnings, she rides a 400 mile rally, well beyond her ability. In the end, she crashes and wants to give up, suddenly flooded with the doubts she's stoically suppressed. But the bike which first set her free gives her the courage to go on. Girl loses bike, girl gets bike back.
GIRL MEETS BIKE is a story of love at first sight, but not how you think. Kat showers her first bike with all the confused passion we give that certain person (or bike) who first steals our heart. As her new friends vie for her affection, one emerges as Kat's first love, further revealing the complexity of her desire. What Kat really sees in the bike is her own chance for freedom. And who doesn't love to be free?
It's an exciting time for filmmaking, as we now have the ability to make films for specific viewers, with all the detail and nuance which reflect those viewers' experience.
GIRL MEETS BIKE is such a film. It springs from my love of motorcycles, but also of film history. As such, its style is eccentric and hard to pin down. But that also describes its audience. The underground motorcycle scenes in the U.S. and abroad are full of off-beat, individualistic people who know and appreciate motorcycle history as well as film history.
GIRL MEETS BIKE is also a woman's story, inspired by a friend who bought her first bike after a divorce and was soon riding, wild and free! I remembered thinking that you'd never see such a character in a mainstream film, and suddenly I saw that I had the chance to show what commercial films rarely allow: a free woman.
Most of us know and admire women who dare to live by their own rules, yet they're seldom seen in movies without some last-minute conversion to the status quo. I want to change that! Instead of punishing the woman for her freedom, GIRL MEETS BIKE supports and rewards her. This is the kind of film I've wanted to see for so long, and I suspect I'm not alone.
We were very pleased with reactions at several test screenings this winter. A number of women came up afterward and said "That's my story! How did you know?"
Film fanatics and motorcyclists alike enjoyed the film's combination of classic cinema style and motorcycle culture. With a cast of real bikers from the Minneapolis scene, the word has already begun to spread that there's a motorcycle movie on it's way--just for us.
If this sounds like your kind of film, we hope you'll join in and support this exciting chance for direct cinema. Many thanks to all the people who've made this film possible so far!
All our reward items are designed to be both stylish and useful for motorcyclists, their friends and loved ones. PHOTOS BELOW:
And, of course, the DVD for viewing with friends or in quiet contemplation. STANDARD DVD contains the completed film, without extras. DELUXE DVD includes the completed film, commentary track with key actors and director, deleted scenes, and subtitles in Spanish, Chinese, German, French and English. The film is unrated, but would likely receive an R rating for nudity and language.)
Even if you don't have a bike, you'll make a smashing entrance--or gift--with one or all of our reward items. Rewards will be mailed to you as soon as they're manufactured. Target date is late Fall 2012, in time for holiday gifts!
WHAT WE NEED NOW AND WHY
Production for GIRL MEETS BIKE took place last summer (2011) in the motorcycling wonderland of southern Minnesota. Since then, we've been in post-production, and are currently finishing up sound editing and publicity materials design.
We're very close to completion, but a few, costly steps remain: sound mixing, music licensing, and DVD authoring are all expensive but crucial steps to take the film from the computer to the big screen with professional quality.
Sales of the finished film will first take place through the motorcycle world--moto press, club networks, local shops, and vintage race and show events where we'll sneak-screen the film and sell DVDs. Our Kickstarter campaign will begin this process, helping to spread the word to potential audiences.
Next summer, we plan to take it international, screening the film in June, 2013 at the Isle of Man motorcycle race (between England and Ireland) where 70,000 international fans can help sales abroad. We're quite excited about the possibilities.
Please help with whatever donation you can. Even small amounts help. Without your Kickstarter backing, we'll be unable to finish the film. We're so very close, and want so much to bring this story to the people it depicts. Your support will make all the difference. Thank you!
REACHING OUR GOAL - HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
Kickstarter is a pledging system which mails potential contributors rewards for various amounts they pledge, ONLY IF the total goal is reached. If we don't reach our goal of $10,000, we don't get anything. You pledge the amount you choose with a credit card, but ARE NOT CHARGED until the goal has been reached. If the goal is NOT reached, your card will not be charged and our project will receive no money.
YES, WE CAN EXCEED OUR GOAL, and we would like to. Sound mixing, music licensing, color correction and DVD authoring are all very expensive professional costs in the filmmaking process. Lower-cost methods are available, but the more funding we receive, the higher the quality of services we can afford to buy--all the better for your viewing and listening experience! Additional funds will be used for travel to motorcycle events for screenings and sales.
YES, YOU CAN HELP SPREAD THE WORD! If this project sounds right for your motorcycle club, film club, circle of friends, rally groups, riding organization, or motorcycle safety training course, please forward our URL, tweet us, like us on Facebook. We are deeply grateful for any help and support we receive in the United States and around the world!
IF I'M OUTSIDE THE USA, CAN I STILL PLEDGE?
YES! ANYONE IN ANY COUNTRY can contribute using a valid credit card. We know that GIRL MEETS BIKE's story of learning to ride your first bike will be familiar to people in Europe, Asia, and the Americas where motorcycles have long been a popular form of transportation. We only wish we could include more languages in our subtitles!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
$10,000 is a lot of money in everyday living, but inside a feature film budget, it can go quickly. For instance, a professional SOUND MIX for a big feature film can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars alone. We're seeking enough money to complete GIRL MEETS BIKE in the smaller scale in which it was created. We could spend over 10,000 on music licensing alone, so hopefully we can exceed our minimum goal and be able to also afford a great sound mix, color correction, and other items which will bring you a quality movie!
