Cooking with Fire is a cookbook that outlines alternative cooking methods and techniques for emergency or disaster situations

The What:

Cooking With Fire, The Disaster Cookbook is a cookbook (in print version and ebook version) that outlines, in very simple and easy to understand ways, how to prepare and cook when the power goes off. Packed with over 200 delicious and easy to make recipes which can be made from easy to find everyday ingredients, Cooking with Fire also covers a wide range of alternative cooking methods, techniques and recipes to use on The Day After.

Each week is seems the news has more and more stories of power-grids going down due to any number of reasons and the modern kitchen is VERY electricity dependent. All of those toasters, microwaves, electric can-openers, blenders, electric ranges and refrigerators that we rely upon, become useless. However, this is no reason not to be able to eat healthy and well.

Cooking with Fire is loaded with lots of information about how to store, prepare and cook tasty recipes over a variety of heat sources and using cooking utensils that will be available after the power goes out.

From campfire cooking with tin foil, to charcoal BBQ fired stir fries this book will teach you how to cook in any situation and not only cook, but cook and eat well! Just because the power is out, doesn’t mean that you can’t have your favorite comfort foods. After all, man has been cooking delicious and healthy meals over fire, well, for most of our history. These recipes also good for everyday cooking and can easily be made in any kitchen.

The ebook is going to be available for the Nook, Kindle, all iDevices and most Android devices as a digital book.  As a special Kickstarter perk. All Kickstarter supporters will receive an additional update to the book about 45 days after release, that will include over 100 more recipes.

We have a slew of stretch goals planned out as well.  For the the first Stretch Goal, If we hit the  funding goal of 1500, all kick starter supporters will automatically get the PDF printable version of the book and then the really fun SG start kicking in!

The Why:

I had been watching throughout the summer as one natural disaster after another rocked distant communities.  Then saw a TV news report about the folks in NY that were going on the first week after the hurricane with no access to food. In the report, they showed a bunch frustrated people in a washed out corner store full of canned food, but no one knew how to build cooking fires or even get the cans opened.  It really got me to thinking about some of the skills our forefathers had before the days of fast food and prepackaged meals, that have been lost through the generations.

Then, about two weeks ago, one of those freak mega storms blew through and dumped a couple of feet of snow, knocking the power and phone service out for four days.(a mere pittance of time compared to some, but it served me notice that it can happen, anywhere at anytime...)  I was at the end of a grocery cycle and I could not drive out anywhere to get re-supplied as the snow had closed the roads as well. (I live in the deep mountains)

This all led me to start experimenting with cooking on my wood fireplace and small propane BBQ and I quickly realized how hard it would be to go about feeding myself and my cat, if the zombie apocalypse happened tomorrow.  Thus the idea was born.

The How:

Most of the recipes have been researched and cataloged and about ¼ of the targeted 40 illustrations are completed. but there is still lots to be done.

The overall book will be broken up in to various sections that catalogs not only the recipes but other aspects of disaster cooking including:

  • How to utilize various heating methods, such as campfires, BBQ’s propane heaters and even hot engine blocks to cook.
  • A variety of different cooking methods ranging from tin foil cooking to stir-fry’s,
  • How to store foods long term.
  • Water management and purification.
  • Kitchen sanitation
  • Check lists on how and where to pre-purchase supplies.
  • and more!

There will also be plenty of illustrations interspersed that will help in visualizing the cooking methods.

The draft content is mostly completed but needs a serious editing pass and tthis is where your help is needed.  The bulk of the funds raised will go to. Mark Twain once said, that only a “fool edits their own work” An axiom I tend to agree with, especially when it comes to my own writing ;-)  Your plebes will help in getting a good editor to go over it all.

One Man, One Cat and 35 days!

The dev team is comprised of me, and my cat Alreen!  I have over 15 years experience in the tech world, doing high level dev and PM work for the likes of Microsoft and Boeing, so I completely understand the technology and project management processes involved in a project like this.

The plan is to do a short, intense dev cycle to get this book out. I do so hate lingering projects and I have the next 45 days completely clear for this project.  My intent is to just sit down and bang out the rest of the book over the course of about 35 days, doing 8-10 hour sprints.

There is a business plan, a project schedule and a rough draft of the book already.. So 35 days should be enough to finish out the book and get it edited, then do the technical mumbo-jumbo to get it formatted for the various readers and idevices, do a round or two of testing and get it up on the publishing sites.

Once the Kickstarter is completed, off we’ll go to getting this done. Part of the fun and the value of this project is that I want to be totally transparent about the overall dev and creative process to the end users. The idea is to have at least two mini-blog posts a day and the bi weekly vblog covering all aspects of the development process, from the initial pre-production of the book.  As well as covering design specs, project plans, working with the various eReader platforms and marketplaces and all aspects of the Kickstarter campaign.

Kickstarer supporters will have full access to the blog to watch the progress in almost real time, have access to the development documentation and dev site where they can ask questions or take votes on artwork and content and read about the detailed process, start-to- finish. Since we're a one man/cat show around here, and with such a tight timeline, it should be quite a ride!

How the Money Will be Spent:

Most of the Money will go into editing services.Mark Twain once said: “It’s a dambed fool that edits his own work” A philosophy I highly agree with. There is also a chunk that goes into taxes and services fees (That federal tax obligation is commonly overlooked it seems) I have also kept a small bit of the budget non allocated. This will help cushion any unforeseen expenses that will undoubtedly arise.

F.A.Q's

  • Will the printed version of the book have the recipe updates?

Yes indeed.   We are actually ahead of schedule for developing the book and so we will have time to include the recipe updates before the book goes to print!

  • What formats with the book be available in?

Right now we’re working on getting in on the Kindle and Nook platforms  and up in the android marketplace, but we’re also looking at getting it into itunes as they now support digital books instead of just apps. Kickstarter supporters will receive a DRM free version of their choice for any platform.

  • It looks like you are using line art in the book. Isn’t that kinda low-tech

We are using just plain black and white line art in the book. This was mostly because of the technical limitations of the ebook platforms. They do not do color or even detailed black and white photos very well. Also, I kinda feel like technical illustrations (like how to build a campfire, or set up a cooking arm) are always best represented in clean, black and white line drawings.

  • When will update be available?

We plan on offering a Kickstarter exclusive update about 45 days after the book goes live. This will be an update of additional recipes and some additional general information.Because of technical limitations of pushing the update automatically, KS supporters will receive an update via email with an update link and will have to manually update their book.

  • What about any stretch goals?

We have a number of stretch goals lined out if we hit the initial funding mark.  The second we hit one dollar after our 1,500 goal each Kickstarter supporter will receive the .PDF printable version of the book, just in case the power on on the eReaders goes out. (this was great supporter feedback from the dev site!  Thanks C!!!)

  • What exactly does Arleen do around there?

Arleen is a rescue cat.  She lived in a small 2x2 foot cage for a year at a kitten mill.   She now lives in the woods with me and seems to love it.  She's a bit of a spaz really.  She runs and jumps and skips and plays all day.  She is also the “test lead” and usually catches small bugs and the occasional mouse.;-0  She has also given me an idea about the next installment.  How to deal with pets during a disaster. But that is the next book.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Risks:

There is little risk, I feel, in actually completing this project. I already have about 100 recipes compiled and most of the main chapters completed in rough draft form.
The main risk I have identified is whether I can actually adhere to the schedule of 35 days. This is a highly aggressive timeline. If there are no hiccups or any unknown, unknowns the schedule holds. If however, some unforeseen circumstances come up, then the development timeline will slew accordingly. Although part of the challenge will be to actually adhere to the project plan and the schedule. If I have thought this out well enough, it should be and easy and fun project. But... I know that projects rarely go according to plan so I'm sure some hiccup or another will arise!

Stretch Goals have already been figured into an expanded project schedule as separate “phases”, so it won’t affect any of the “phase one” goals or timelines which cover the scope of this project as outlined above.

There is also little risk in getting the rewards out. I have speced out the products and suppliers and procured about half of the physical rewards and have put some pretty detailed thought into the actual cost of the delivery. So I guarantee the rewards will go out.

Assumptions:

One assumption I have is that I will be able to complete all the line art for the book. The book will be full of detailed illustrations. Because of the technical limitations of the various ebook reader platforms, all illustrations need to be in basic black and white line art. A fairly simple style, but still requiring enough time to do it

I already have about 1/3 of them done and in place in the rough draft. If I start of have time constraints however, my backup plan is to put some of this artwork out for freelance artists on Craigslist and/or Reddit.com/r/forhire .

I have the artwork specifications done so it should be a fairly easy matter to get 10-25 illustrations done through a remote artist at a reasonable rate.
If I had to go this route however, it would take a percentage out of the overall budget for other areas. So I would have to pick up some of the slack in other areas myself, mainly editing ,that I plan to farm out to a freelancer.
