I've Been Up So Long It Looks Like Down To Me: The Micros Play The Blues

The Microscopic Septet has been playing various permutations of the blues since the very beginning of the band. The first one was #21 in the Micros book, Thelonious Monk's Misterioso, which we finally recorded on our recent CD, Friday The Thirteenth: The Micros Play Monk. Others include Baghdad Blues (Off Beat Glory/Surrealistic Swing), Little Bobby (Beauty Based on Science/Surrealistic Swing), Hey Wayne (Let's Flip!/Seven Men In Neckties), & Let's Coolerate One (Manhattan Moonrise). But the Micros book contains many blues tunes of various sorts that we have played at gigs over the years and never recorded: Hofstra Goes To Heaven, The Dave, Teddy's True Life Blues, I Missed You In Montreal, Reaching Previte, Everything; the list goes on and on.

So, what did we decide to do, when we decided to make a CD dedicated to variations on the blues? We wrote almost all new stuff. And once again, we are appealing to you, our loyal fans, to help us raise the money to cover the production expenses to record it. We have master engineer Jon Rosenberg to record it, in Tom Tedesco's studio, where I recorded my well-regarded Big Trouble CDs and Normalology. And Joel loves the piano.

The Microscopic Septet began in 1981 and is still performing and making new music. It's a different world in 2016 than it was in 1981, but it's not that different. We had to depend on the support of friends and fans to record  our first LP, Take The Z Train in 1983, and we still do in 2016. I hope you are able to collaborate with us in making The Micros Play The Blues.

Risks and challenges

None: The CD is guaranteed for a January 2017 release on Cuneiform Records. We just have to get it recorded.
