Somnium: Dreams & Nightmares is unique tabletop game played with an APP that creates the illusion of the board being alive. The app is free to download, and is only required on one phone. The phone, placed in the center of the board, will control the different phases and effect game-play based on player’s actions.
-1 Playing Board
-1 Dream Deck
-1 Nightmare Deck
-1 FATE Deck
-1 6-sided Die
-6 Game Pieces (different colors)
-A FREE APP can be downloaded on the Apple App Store as well as the Android Play Store that will help make decisions throughout the game. The app is needed in order to play the game. Simply download it on one phone and start the app. (patent pending)
The game begins by opening the app and choosing the colors of each player. Up to 6 people can play. Once you open the app, you will see 6 bubbles with different colors. Each player should select their color here and when selected, the bubbles will be circled. Then, grab the game pieces and place all the selected colors on the board in the space right before the “1” space.
After you choose your color by touching the bubble and activating it in the app, you can press start to being the game. As soon as start is touched, the game enters the dream phase and begins. All player pieces are at the start of the board right before the space labeled “1” and the goal is to pass the “100” space by any means necessary. You can sabotage others or even team up to sabotage someone who is far ahead. Alliances are formed and broken because there can only be one winner.
The app will have a color displayed in the center of the orb. This is the player that goes first, and after that, the turns are played clockwise.
When it is your turn, you can advance by rolling the dice and moving forward by that number. Or, you can draw a card from either the “nightmare” or “dream” deck and forfeit your free will to the game. Touch the app and the color that comes up in the orb will be the one that gets affected by the card.
If you land on a space that is already occupied by another, you must skip that space and go to the next available space forward.
If you land on a black space at any point, you must draw a card from the “nightmare” deck and suffer the effects by yourself.
Advanced mode only, intro to FATE cards:
Once the players are seated and ready, each player gets one “FATE” card. Place this card face up in front of you. These cards are your fate until it gets discarded. Before you begin your turn, the fate cards effects must be performed first. These cards each represent a type of dream or a nightmare. They can help you or hinder you. Once you have your “FATE” card, the only way to get rid of it is to use your turn to discard the card AFTER suffering its effect. Once you discard it, you must draw a new one and end your turn. This is your new “FATE” card.
This game can be played in beginner mode, but if you crave more strategy and difficulty, Advanced mode is available.
-About the creators (Just Jester LLC)-
We were always fascinated by the mystery of dreams. Something about dreams always seems to mystify everyone and it is only right for a board game to explore this topic. That's why we formed Just Jester LLC and Created Somnium. Somnium is embellished with mysterious artwork that resembles dreams and surreal images that leave you dazzled and, for a moment, completely enchanted. All the paintings are original pieces that were painted by one of the creator’s father: he had been painting his entire life, and none of the artwork was ever seen outside of the painting studio. We decided that this was the only way for the artwork to be freed into the world for all to see, decorating our game and overwhelming the audience in the process.
The game is completely covered in original surreal artwork painted by Armenian artist Arkadi Gevorgyan.
Risks and challenges
We have been working on this for about 2 years now, and we have had several hundreds of play-throughs with many different groups to iron out all the kinks and make the game as fun and engaging as possible. The designs have been completed and all we need now is funding to pull the trigger on a batch order and pay our app developer for all the hard work hes put in to get us a preview version of the app that we can use for testing. With your help, we can hit the ground running and be ready to ship well before the holidays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
