Niki Table Lamp

Simply a beautiful little lamp for everybody to enjoy. If only that was all that needed to be said about it.

Allow me to tell you a little more about how this enchanting lamp came about, and I promise that you will appreciate its appearance even more.

Those chunky pencils for legs are intended to put a smile on the faces of children and adults alike. The single butterfly hidden amongst its glowing leaves is just that to a child. However, for me and most adults a more abstract meaning is often attached to the appearance of a butterfly: the memory of a loved one. In my case it is the memory of my son Nikolaas, or Niki for short.

I decided to start designing this lamp earlier this year, after I was faced with the unthinkable: to have to make a decision regarding the life of Nikolaas. There is very little I would like to share about the experience of losing a child, other than that it eclipses any sorrow I could have imagined. This project would be my haven. It would allow me to dwell in the few memories I would have of him, while creating something beautiful that he might have loved to look at.

The design is based on a larger table lamp which we launched with the help of the Kickstarter community. That campaign was a huge success and even sparked the interest of Robert De Niro's Nobu restaurants. They commissioned a tiny battery powered version for their newest restaurant in Manila, the Philippines.

Let's make this campaign a success as well, but for a different reason. With this design I would like to spread an awareness about the condition that Niki succumbed to: Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). This year, the US Congress has officially recognized the month of April as CDH awareness month (April 19 is the international day of CDH awareness). Plenty of resources are available online, should you want to learn more about this life threatening condition that affects thousands of newborns every year.

Variety

The Niki lamp comes in two varieties to suit different settings. There is a version with colored legs (red, green and blue), and a version with natural wood colored legs. Both versions come with an optional butterfly module which can be placed anywhere in the lamp during assembly, which should only take about half an hour. Both lamps are available in a 110V North American version which takes a common E12 (Candelabra) bulb, and a 240V European version which takes an E14 bulb.

Materials and Dimensions

The white shade part of the Niki lamp is made out of High Density Polyethylene, a common and recyclable plastic (recycling code#2). The legs are made by one of America's oldest pencil manufacturer and measure a generous 13/32 of an inch (1 cm) in diameter. All electrical components are respectively UL listed or CE certified. The Niki lamp stands 10.25”(26 cm) high and has a maximum diameter of 8” (20cm). The cord is 5’ (150 cm) long. The dimensions of the box are 4" (10 cm) cubed.

Production

The production of this lamp will mainly be done locally in the Los Angeles area . The electrical part will be made abroad to keep the cost of the lamp reasonable. All materials and parts will be ordered as soon as it is clear how much we should order to fulfill Kickstarter pledges. We expect to be ready for shipping a mere two months after the closing of the campaign.

Raised Funds

In order to reach a large audience, we have kept the price of this lamp much lower in comparison to our previous projects. Therefore, the funds raised will mostly go towards materials, production, tooling and some final prototyping costs. The remaining funds will go into Niki's piggy bank. My wife and I intend to find an appropriate purpose for those funds, which will honor the memory of our son Nikolaas and other children who lost their lives to CDH.

Finally I would like to mention a few amazing organizations which have helped us, and continue to help us through this ordeal.

Breathe Easy is an organization which helps families affected by CDH by providing care packages. The Niki lamp will be included in those packages as our contribution to their efforts.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The amazing staff and doctors at this hospital guided us through the most heart wrenching period of our lives.

Ronald McDonald House. An undervalued international organization which allowed my wife and me to be close to Nikolaas at all times during his short life.

DHReams research program, where they are dedicated to investigating the genetic causes of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, the birth defect that Nikolaas succumbed to.

Risks and challenges

We are thoroughly prepared for the production of this lamp. Our previous Kickstarter campaign was a great learning experience and has allowed us to foresee many issues that might occur with this project. The biggest risk will be the occasional delay in supply of parts or materials. It is our goal to keep you in the loop about any hiccups, should they occur.
