The 3rd stretch goal has been reached. Everyone will now get a Sizzler enamel badge and a ZZap! 64 calendar with a Oli Frey Zzap covers used each month.
The next stretch goal is an extra 8-pages within the annual at £60K.
ZZap! 64 was the magazine that every 64 owner went to for honest, frank reviews of the games to buy for the system as well in-depth features and ‘cutting-edge’ humour from the likes of Gary Penn and Julian Rignall.
The icing on the already calorie rich cake was Oliver Frey’s stunning covers, depicting aliens, space and military scenes and some very sexy ladies (here’s looking at you Leaderboard lollipop lady!).
With the success of the Crash Annual last year for the ZX Spectrum, it seemed appropriate to pay homage to this best-selling computer and produce a new issue of ZZap! 64 for the Commodore 64 also in the guise of an annual – so it will be in hardback and have the feel of the annuals that we used to read back in the 80s and 90s such as the Beano and The Dandy.
Thanks has to go to Jeremy Wood for the cracking video accompanying this Kickstarter.
Roger, Oli and I have worked on a number of books over the last 3-4 years culminating last year with issue 99 of Crash in the form of an annual that was well received by the ZX Spectrum community - issue 100 is planned to be delivered this year in time for Christmas!
The Commodore 64 community looked on wondering and asking if we would produce a new ZZap magazine for them. So in collaboration with Future Publishing, we have already started to produce the ZZap! 64 Annual 2019 and have now come to Kickstarter to help with funding its print and to re-compense those who have contributed to its content.
Roger has agreed once more to take the helm as the editor and Oli will take charge of the graphical style of the issue as well as creating a brand new cover in the style of the early issues of ZZap.
The annual will be hardback only and come in at 112 pages - it will be in full colour throughout.
We have decided to keep the new cover by Oliver Frey a surprise so that when the book arrives on your doorstep in late September this year, it will be the first time a reader of the annual will have seen it. Oli will be dusting off his air brush once more to create the cover in the same way he created them back in the day.
What you will find inside will be recognisable to any fan of the magazine - we have many reviews of the games from the last 10 years or so, with a small number receiving the coveted SIZZLER award and one game getting the almighty GOLD MEDAL award; we will have a feature where we gather a number of C64 programmers, artists and musicians in a room to reminisce about the golden C64 years – think Andrew Braybrook, Archer Maclean etc talking over a pint or two and us there to capture what is said!
The reviews have been written by recognised names in the C64 community as well as names synonymous with ZZap in its heyday – the likes of Jaz Rignall and Robin Hogg for example, each with their own portraits.
The ZZap! Sizzler and Gold Medal awards are back - which game will get the coveted Gold Medal award?
We also have veterans of the gaming industry contributing - Simon Butler for example, who worked on many hits for Ocean Software adds his views on the best art to appear on the Commodore 64 by fans and Mel Croucher adds his particular style and humour.
New adverts for the latest games in the scene will be littered throughout the issue. Here is one for Guns 'N' Ghosts - published by Psytronik Software.
Jaz Rignall is back in ZZap! 64 reviewing some games, and contributing his uniqueness that made ZZap the magazine it was.
Stuart Williams will be taking up the Adventure slot as the ‘White Wizard’ – readers are in for a treat as he catches up with Scott Adams, the ‘father’ of adventure games as we remember them.
Paul Rand will once again be writing for ZZap! 64 and talking about a day in the life of creating an issue of Zzap! back when we were all over 30 years younger.
Those pledging will be encouraged to write in a letter for the ZZap Rrap section of the annual – so this would be a great opportunity to appear in an issue of Zzap! 64.
We also have a great competition prize in the annual - win a TheC64 Mini from the guys at Retro Games Ltd along with a 2nd joystick.

Risks and challenges
The aim is to release the annual in September 2018 - with the experience of producing 'The History of Ocean Software' and 'The story of US Gold' and the series of ZX Spectrum books produced, the task of producing this annual to time, quality and budget should not be an issue.
The task of creating the ZZap! 64 Annual will be costly and time consuming - the cost primarily represents the printing of such a high quality book. We aim to produce 3,000 annuals in total - I need therefore to ensure we raise sufficient funds to produce the product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
