The Story of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum in Pixels Vol 2
Thanks to to the supporters of this campaign, a book on 'The Story of the ZX Spectrum in Pixels Vol2 and Vol 3' will be created over the next 6 months or so
We have stated March 2015 as a delivery date for Volume 2 of the book.
If you missed the campaign, you can still pre-order the book, and be part of those who receive the initial run, here :
You can also order a copy of Volume 1 of the Spectrum book, 'The History of Ocean' as well as posters and other Revival memorabilia in the shop.
Thanks again for all the support you have given us,
I thought I would keep it simple as it's Christmas and people are with loved ones etc - so the 1st goal is for a 'Spectrum +' badge (a follow up to the Spectrum badge that those who pledged on the Volume 1 Kickstarter received). The 2nd goal is for an interactive PDF/flipbook and the 3rd goal is a variation of the theme I posted below - those who have been loyal to both Kickstarters and books will get a voucher for a free copy of the book - only postage to pay. If the stretch goal is not hit, then the £5 cost for the book stands + postage.
Volume 1 Video
Here is a video of Volume 1 of the book that just got published.
If you would like to pre-order the book via PAYPAL, you can do so now on the Fusion Retro Books site here : http://www.fusionretrobooks.com/product-p/spectvol2.htm
Why more books?
I loved doing the first book so much, it just seemed logical to do another and then I thought why not do 3 just like they do in the movies. Volume 2 will contain a further 100 games and 10 memoirs with other nostalgic imagery littered throughout it's 236 pages. Volume 3 will follow the same formula i.e. 236 pages, 100 games and 10 memoirs, but will also include a number of homebrew games within the 100 selected games. I then plan to have a Sinclair themed 'boxset' box made by the printers that all 3 books can be housed in to keep them all mint and looking nice on the bookshelf. I will NOT be taking Volume 3 of the book to Kickstarter. Those who have supported both campaigns will get a voucher code at the end of this campaign that can be used to purchase the Volume 3 Spectrum book from the Fusion Retro Books website (www.fusionretrobooks.com) for £5 + P&P when the book becomes avaialble at the end of the first half of next year. The book will be on sale for those who have not participated in the campaigns for £25 + P&P thereafter.
As always thank you so much for your support.
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K was my introduction to computing - at the tender age of 13, Santa Claus brought me Sir Clive's latest machine for Christmas and I can honestly say it was love at first sight.
When pocket money allowed, I adjourned my Speccy with gifts - mostly with the latest games and sometimes even new hardware to extend the machines capabilities.
I read Newsfield's Crash magazine, a magazine that I craved each month to find out what was going on in the world of Spectrum gaming and to see what awesome cover the infamous Oli Frey had conjured up that month.
Those years with the Spectrum as my friend are ones I look back on with enormous fondness and to me was my golden era of computing.
The Spectrum Book - Volume 1
I successfully run a campaign to produce Volume 1 of 'The Story of the ZX Spectrum in Pixels' back in the summer - here is a link to the campaign :https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/47744432/the-story-of-the-zx-spectrum-in-pixels
This book is being launched on the 19th December 2014 and UK pledgers on that campaign should receive their book plus perks, all being well, before Christmas.
The book is 236 pages in length; includes 78 double page spread games (see the 3D Tanx spread in the picture above); has memoirs from 19 x ZX Spectrum veterans including Simon Butler, Paul Owens and Clive Townsend and and in depth interview with Rick Dickinson, the guy who designed all the Sinclair machines. The book has been produced to the highest quality.
Some great feedback already received from those who have had a preview of the PDF:
"VERY impressive, tons of great nostalgic memories, great write-ups (including one from our very own Martyn) which are really good. I'm loving the screenshots and the small writeups for the games. You realise how many great games there were back then, Chris already mentioned a possible new Speccy book/sequel so i hope that happens.
Looking forward to getting the physical book very soon. Very impressed."

The Spectrum Book - Volume 2
This Kickstarter is for Volume 2 of a 3-book series and will also be 236 pages in length. This book will be produced to the high quality of Volume 1 and include 100 games, each with its own double page spread and mini-review. The book will also contain a further 10 memoirs from Industry veterans and as the campaign progresses, the names of these gaming legends will be announced.
Martyn Carroll and Spanner Spencer will once again be contributing to the book and STE'86's (Steven Day) iconic cover will adjourn the front.
The book will be littered with adverts and imagery from a by-gone age and with the close relationship I have with Roger Kean and Oliver Frey, the book will also contain some great imagery from Crash magazine and Oli is the first confirmed guest who will be be writing a memoir for the book.
We have some great rewards - and more will be added throughout the campaign.
- Oliver Frey has kindly allowed us to re-produce some infamous ZX Spectrum Crash A2 and A3 prints that will be signed by himself, Roger Kean and myself. You can choose from those shown below:
- Signed gaming postcards by those who wrote on the game
- Signed Spectrum's
- Signed Horizon Tape
- A3 Ultimate Perk
Signed Nodes of Yesod (Steve Wetherill), Ant Attack (Sandy White), Knightlore (Oli Frey) + a Crash poster (Oli Frey)
- Mire Mare Tribute
A limited run boxed edition of a tribute version Mire Mare, the Ultimate Play The Game Sabreman game that never happened. The game was developed by Luca Bordoni and is an excellent addition to every retro game collection. In the 'Ultimate' style box there will be the game on cassette, a full colour map, a keyring and a cassette inlay with game instructions. There will only be 100 of these made and each one will be numbered. So get your pledge in early.
Postage within the UK will be free.
Each book will be securely packaged in an 'Amazon' type mail box and sent to you first class!
The book will be sent out at the beginning of March 2015 and updates will be given throughout the development of the book through Kickstarter updates.
Risks and challenges
The aim is to release the book at the beginning of March 2015 - with the experience of producing 'The History of Ocean Software' book, Volume 1 of 'The Story of the ZX Spectrum in Pixels' and the input and expertise of Roger Kean the task of producing this book to time, quality and budget should not be an issue.
The task of creating 'The Story of the ZX Spectrum in Pixels Volume 2' will be costly and time consuming - the cost primarily represents the printing of such a high quality book. We aim to produce 1,500 books in total - I need therefore to ensure we raise sufficient funds to produce these books and that they can be be sent out to those who bid in the UK for free.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
