The Story of U.S. Gold
Thanks to to the supporters of this campaign, a book on 'The Story of U.S. Gold' will be created over the next year or so.
We have said September 2015 as a delivery date for the book just to give us a bit of breathing space in case of any unforeseen challenges.
If you missed the campaign, you can still pre-order the U.S. Gold book on the Revival site and be part of those who receive the initial run, here :
You can also order a copy of 'The History of Ocean' as well as posters and other Revival memorabilia in the shop.
Thanks again for all the support you have given us,
Chris & Roger
All stretch goals met.
Roger and I met up with Geoff Brown on the evening of the 6th June to interview him on his company U.S. Gold. Here is a pic of Roger with Geoff
Geoff signed the issues of U.S. Gold themed Crash and Zzap issues used in the BEACH, FORBIDDEN and ROAD perks. Here is an example of the BEACH perk issue 4 of Zzap! 64:
During November 2012 I started my first Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a book on 'The History of Ocean Software'. The Kickstarter was successful resulting in Roger Kean and I embark on a 12-month journey to uncover and document the full history of this seminal British gaming publishing and games development software house. For your interest you can check out the campaign here.
At the end of November 2013 I started to send out the completed book to the campaign backers, as well as new friends that we had made during the year whilst 'making' the book. The response received from the readers and fans of Ocean Software was, and continues to be, overwhelming. So much so that Roger and I would love to embark on a new adventure to document another infamous publishing house based in the UK at the same time - the prolific publisher that was known as U.S. Gold.
The U.S. Gold Book
The book, 'The Story of U.S. Gold', will be 200+ pages in length and finished to the very same high standard adopted for 'The History of Ocean Software' publication (the same printing company is going to be used).
The U.S. Gold logo on the front cover will be embossed making the book a desirable addition to any gaming fan or book collector.
The book will chart the rise and rise of U.S. Gold throughout the 1980's and 1990's up to the sell-off to Eidos, talking to all those who created the company, Geoff and Anne Brown, and the management team that guided the company through 12 years of successful business.
And how can we not explore the origins of Tomb Raider, a title Eidos eventually published but was born under U.S. Gold's watch.
The book will talk to the developers of U.S. Gold's successful releases - titles such as Beach Head, Impossible Mission and Summer Games as well as arcade conversions like Outrun, Tapper, Spy Hunter and Strider.
The book will also explore the creation and running of 'Centresoft' - a company owned by U.S. Gold that became the largest distribution centre of games in the UK - Ocean Software was their biggest customer.
Artwork and never before seen photographs will be littered throughout the book.
We have some great rewards, and more will be added throughout the campaign.
- Oliver Frey has kindly allowed us to re-produce some infamous U.S. GOLD themed Zzap! 64 A3 prints that will be signed by himself, Roger Kean and myself. You can choose from those shown below:
- We have Commodore 64 and Atari 800 physical copies of Dropzone signed by Archer Maclean to give away as well as Dropzone loading screen postcards signed by Archer and Steven Day, who created the graphic back in 1986 (it was not used by U.S. Gold).
- Limited Edition Gold and Silver versions of 'The History of Ocean Software' books are up for grabs only available to backers of our campaigns. Only 10 Gold and 10 Silver were printed and these will be signed by Jon Woods - one for you collectors out there. Risks and challenges
The aim is to release the book in the Autumn of 2015 - with the experience of producing 'The History of Ocean Software' book and the input and expertise of Roger Kean and the U.S. Gold 'employees' the task of producing this book to time, quality and budget should not be an issue.
The task of creating 'The Story of U.S Gold' will be costly and time consuming - the cost primarily represents the printing of such a high quality book. We aim to produce 1,000 books in total - I need therefore to ensure we raise sufficient funds to produce these books and that they can be be sent out to those who bid in the UK for free.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
