When I was in my early teens I received a ZX Spectrum for Christmas and the first games I had for the computer were Manic Miner and Lunar Jetman. I was lucky that the games my parents randomly chose for me for my stocking were pretty decent ones.
The next one I bought myself, and I wasn't so lucky - The Devils of the Deep by Richard Shepherd Software. I was so upset on using my pocket money on such a duff game that I took it back and begged the WH Smith's lady to have mercy!
I soon realised that I needed to research the games that I was to spend my limited pocket money on - get the opinions of others first. This was the time, around the age of 12, I bumped into Crash magazine on the shelves of the local newsagent. It was on that day I fell in love with the distinctive art of Oliver Frey.
I used to look forward more each month to Oli's covers than sometimes the content inside. The Crash magazine had such an influence on my childhood - C64 and Amstrad owners feel the same about their respective magazine, Zzap! 64 and Amtix that also had Oli's amazing artwork.
Back in 2006, Roger Kean released a book called The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey. The book was paperback and 192 pages in length. The original book can be seen below.
We have decided to revisit this book, some 10 years later, and update it with another 52 pages of art that Oli has done in that time and make it hardback only, print it to the highest quality and call it the Extended Edition.
The book is actually ready to print - this Kickstarter will help fund the print of another new run of this fantastic book with brand new art and printed to the highest quality.
Those who have seen my Ocean, US Gold and Spectrum books have always commented on their quality and content. The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey will be printed by the same printer to the very same high quality and if stretch goals are hit, we will include a dust cover with further unique artwork for the book.
The book will be 244 pages in length and the hardback cover will sport spot varnish on Oli's name. to make it really stand out
The Ocean and US Gold books cover the history of the respective great games companies. The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey will cover the history of the man behind the art - take a look into Oli's younger days and how he started his craft.
The book is split into chapters grouping in art from monsters and aliens to heroes and villains. If you were a games player of the 80s and 90s, there will be a great deal of artwork in this book that you will recognise that will kick in the nostalgic memories - how about the issue 1 artwork of Crash magazine in the image below for starters!
There are double page spreads that just show off Oli's art - sometimes words are just not needed.
And other pages just contain iconic art pieces like the diver from Issue 8 of Crash magazine...
..and the Amtix centrefold from Issue 1.
I can guarantee that there will be imagery in the book for everyone!
We have some great perks...

There is then The story of the ZX Spectrum in pixels, that now comes in three wonderful volumes....

Risks and challenges
The aim is to release the book in the Summer of 2016 - with the experience of producing 'The History of Ocean Software' and 'The story of US Gold' and the series of ZX Spectrum books produced, the task of producing this book to time, quality and budget should not be an issue.
The task of creating 'The Fatasy Art of Oliver Frey Extended Edition' will be costly and time consuming - the cost primarily represents the printing of such a high quality book. We aim to produce 1,000 books in total - I need therefore to ensure we raise sufficient funds to produce these books and that they can be be sent out to those who bid in the UK for free.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
