La Reina is the single personification of all the millions of fluctuating identities humans have created throughout the eras. She is full of the mystical, the violence, the compassion, the darkness and the intelligence that lies within us. She is La Reina.
The Spectacle: La Reina is the unclassifiable, genre bending spectacle where nothing is as it seems and there is always more than meets the eye. A feast for the senses with total immersion in this overwhelming soup of old and new theatrical methods and apparatuses. Shadow dancing blended with contemporary dance interactions, contortion and acrobatics bring mysterious baroque legends to life.The magic of costumes, light, smoke and mirrors evoke the eternal world of ancient gods and tragic heroines struggling with destiny, faith and oppression. Here you can witness the transformation of a woman to a man, a man to a cow, and a god to a gadfly before your very eyes and to the original at once flamboyant and solemn electro-folk soundtrack performed live on stage.
The Music: Composed by Julian Kornya at A-frame studios in Black Mountain, NC and honoring the heritage of musical inventiveness, the score is at once spacious and eternal electronic soundscapes with bright and melancholy brass melodies of the trumpet, sax, and trombone.The full instrumentation of the production, as expansive as the eternity it represents, includes strings, grinding synths, sweet guitars, vibes, and bell plates – a spectacle all to themselves, and is essential to the overwhelming scope of the words.
The Synopsis: The words of this spectacle are an arrangement of rare beautiful writing collected from ancient and mysterious Sumer to the bloody and vengeful world of Europe’s Reformation. Every fragment has been arranged to interact seamlessly with the next to create a “song of the world”. The characters all belong to the first myths ever written and they proceed through the millenniums in constant spiritual, political, sexual, and domestic transformation.
Where and When and Who?
The spectacle will take place August 23 and 24 at The Diana Wortham Theater in Asheville, NC and go on tour in 2014. Nine actors, four musicians and seven creative collaborators are committed to bring La Reina on stage.
Things that make this project INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, and several other degrees of SPECTACULAR:
1) We are bringing rare and lost literary treasures to people who may otherwise not know they exist. C’mon! Medieval female mystics as the most important literary force of the dark and middle ages…Awesome! The first written myth ever! And law, ever! Performed live on stage here with you and me!!!
2) A complete and original soundtrack. What? A COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK? Awesome. Again. And it’s not just the sweet and melodic movements of thematic background sounds, it’s also an experiment in the organization of sound, here in John Cage’s own Black Mountain.
3) The soundtrack has music you can meditate to.
4) We are publishing an anthology of the original writings with our script! Not only can you be taken away in the lyrical arrangements of La Reina, but you can immerse yourself in the greatness of all the original texts! These include cuneiform legends, classic and classical plays, one of the first written liturgical dramas and Baroque poetry.
5) We are making Bell Plates as part of the scenery. Bell Plates!!!
6) We are an art of collaboration!

Theatre is the culmination of the arts. The theatrical event is the true collaboration of many artists.We paint with light, we paint with sound, we paint with the body. We build houses, and we form sculpture, we sew fine garments and fashion extravagant masks. We sing, we dance, we play. We write music, we write dialogues, we recite poetry and we tell stories.
…and we do it all with you.

Your donation helps us not only to create outstanding costumes, fund set and props and reassure a professional marketing campaign for our world premiere, it is also an important investment that will help La Reina to get on tour in 2014 and reach as many people as possible.

Where the funds will go
While the rental costs for the theater and the audition space are covered by investor funding and a part of the future ticket sales, we still need to invest a minimum of $4,100 to make La Reina as sensational as possible.
$1,700 will go to the material costs for the extravagant costumes including Rococo style dresses, animal masks, marionettes and puppets.
$300 will cover the missing expenses for our minimalistic, spacious set design and the props.
$800 will cover poster prints and our marketing campaign that involves several events and performances. The more tickets we sell, the more the ensemble gets paid.
$600 will cover administrative costs like accounting and insurance.
$700 will cover Kickstarter fees and the cost of rewards.
Where additional funding will go
Every dollar over our goal will improve the production value of La Reina. It means better costumes, better props, better make-up and a better set. Also we will be able to distribute stipends to our performers and musicians.

Risks and challenges
Our main obstacle is ensuring BUTTS IN SEATS!!!! We hope we see people scalping our tickets, we want to see people lined up outside the Diana Wortham praying for divine intervention to get their BUTTS IN THE SEATS!!!
The main risk is everybody involved pours their heart and soul in the project for months and don't get a pay day (or at least a useful pay day)
