INTRO by COY! Communications:
'Unleash the POWER of PUERILITY' will be a seriously stupid self-help book about the remarkable benefits of being silly.
It's based on the 'inspirational' lectures by the celebrated Commercial ARTIST Mark Denton Esq. (Don't take our word for it - see the lovely quotes below*).
Over the last 10 years the talk has been performed for 100's of audiences all over the world, for conferences, universities, art collages, advertising agencies, design studios, and client companies.
Essentially it's a collection of stories that illustrate how Mark employs his proven formula of coming up with a schoolboy idea, applying a high-end finish and looking on as unexpected, magical results unfold.
The only problem to date has been that there's so much material that Mark hasn't been able to fit it all into a talk that only lasts an hour... but don't despair! It's all (or most of it) going to be in the book.
"My daughter's right, she said his talks are better than mine." - Dave Trott, Founder of GGT, legendary speaker and author.
"Mark Denton’s talks have a long afterlife. Weeks after attending one you find yourself bursting into laughter when one of his stories inexplicably springs into your mind. It can be quite embarrassing." Ben Casey, Co-founder and Director of The Chase.
"...don't be fooled, there are serious lessons to be learned here by anyone wanting to succeed in the advertising and design business." Ben Priest, Creative co-founder of adam&eveDDB.
"Mark has that incredible optimism and excitement that makes the impossible not quite so impossible anymore…" - Laura Jordan Bambach, CCO of Mr. President.
"The true measure of Mark Denton is a dedication to creativity which takes him to the brink of self-harm, coupled with an unstoppable determination to nurture the creative potential of everyone he encounters." - Jason Stone, Editor of David Reviews.
"Mark's energy is off the scales, he has an idea and then that idea doesn’t stay in a bottom drawer, it gets made and he breathes life into it." - Nicole Yershon, Entrepreneur and author of Rough Diamond.
"For me, the most inspirational person working in the business today." - Mark Fairbanks, Group Creative Director at R/GA
"Life Affirming" - Damon Collins, ECD at Joint.
"Amazing!" - Tony Kaye (yes! THE Tony Kaye), Film Director and Artist.
BLURB by Mark Denton Esq.
I can't deny it, the book will be full of stupid stuff.
But it can't be THAT stupid because I've built my 41 and three quarters year-long-career in Advertising/Design/Art on the principles outlined in its pages.
It's the sort of behaviour that has led to me being a STAR of the National Football Museum, putting on the UK's first ever World Championship Mexican Wrestling event in Leicester Square, being the only person to get the 'C' word into the D&AD Annual and having my work displayed in the Royal Academy of Arts.
It all started early on when an old boss of mine judged one of my creative ideas as being a bit 'Puerile'. I didn't know what it meant at the time but I took it as a compliment.
So I've been engaged in daft stuff ever since and it's all worked out better than I could have ever expected.
The book will be my way of spreading the word about the 'Power of Puerility' to the next generation of creatives, not only from the world of advertising but any creatively inclined professional (or amateur) who wants to achieve remarkable/ridiculous results.
What's the book going to be like?
The book is going to be a litho printed, sewn bound, paperback about 210x140mm and it'll have approximately 400 pages (all specs may be subject to change/improvement as the project evolves).
Famous Advertising speaker and author, the legendary Dave Trott, has written a spiffing INTRODUCTION and renowned Creative Director Dave Dye (the man behind the world's best Art Direction blog 'Stuff from the Loft') has penned the OUTRODUCTION.
And guess what? There'll be lots of words in-between too.
But what it'll mostly contain is shed-loads of full colour pictures, a fair proportion of which will be brand new and shot specifically for the book.
AND THERE'S MORE!
Anyone who's ever been to one of my events will know that I LOVE a good knees-up and the 'Power of Puerility' book launch will be no exception.
And of course EVERYONE who pledges towards the book is invited... the more money I raise, the better the crisps!
We have a humongous amount of rewards to give away, from a selection of perfectly puerile postcards to signed limited edition art.
Risks and challenges
If I raise the money the book will definitely be produced (I've produced a few book before so I know the ropes).
The major risk that I can see is that I make the book more spectacular than I've specified and I spend my own food money on it.
I'll pedal really hard to deliver it on time but any delay due to me making the book more spectacular will be minimal and I'll make sure all 'pledgers' have ample notice of ANY changes of plan (it won't happen tho', otherwise my Missus will give me a thick ear).
