Chef Barry Horton and wife Jennifer of Local Love Catering, a 100% vegan caterer will open a plant-based bistro Fall of 2013.
Woo Hoo. We made it.
Time for a Stretch Goal of $30,000.
Thanks for all the support - this is happening because of you. We are so excited to be making this happen and we want to stretch the goal to $30,000, not to be greedy but to add some MORE awesome kitchen equipment like a pasta maker for house made gluten free pasta and an ice cream maker for fresh coconut and soy ice creams, and an industrial mixer for fresh baked breads daily. Please help us by sharing what we are up to!
Again thank you from the bottome of our hearts,
From the Sanctuary Bistro Family to yours!
Jennifer and Chef Barry
After five years of catering organic, vegan and gluten free meals to you, we are very excited to deliver what you’ve been asking for: Sanctuary, a fine dining, vegan bistro in the East Bay area is scheduled to open this Fall.
By creating a sustainable Bistro that is healthy for the planet, the environment and all living beings we create a sanctuary - a beautiful space to find peace while enjoying local, organic, healthy, vegan food with a farm to table philosophy.
Our Bistro will be a warm, natural, organic location to enjoy with loved ones, family, and friends. Sanctuary is not just for those who embrace the vegan lifestyle, but also for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint, eat with more compassion, or simply want a healthful option when going out.
We will bring local produce into gourmet, organic, vegan cuisine in a conscientious and thoughtful way.
And don’t worry! Local Love Catering might go away by name but only name. We will continue our catering business out of our restaurant under the name Sanctuary.
By the way, if you are new to us, Chef Barry is the former head chef at the The Ravens' within the Stanford Inn by the Sea and has been cooking since he was 17. Classically trained at the Cordon Bleu in Portland, OR, he converted Stanford Inn’s Ravens' Restaurant from a vegetarian to a vegan restaurant.
In 2009, we founded Local Love Catering in the Bay Area with a few dollars and a lot of pies and doubled our sales each year serving private clients, parties, and weddings.
Why the name Sanctuary?
A Sanctuary for the animals, the planet, and the people.
What will the kickstarter funds be used for?
We are going to use the funds received from kickstarter to purchase all of the equipment we need to have a fully functioning restaurant, including stoves, sinks and more. We will also be using the funds to decorate the space making it a beautiful sanctuary. Lastly, we are also hoping to raise enough to help us get through the most difficult time of a restaurant, the first 6 months.
Eating healthfully doesn’t require sacrifice.
It’s no secret food brings people together. Fresh and delicious food, sourced from organic and local farms, made with compassion does that and so much more. Eating well and knowing the food you are eating doesn’t harm the environment or animals allows people to know they are doing something to make the world a better place.
Compassionate education through sharing.
Growing up, I became concerned about the cruelty and pollution resulting in factory farming. When I was in my teens, I started buying my own food and eating veggie burgers while my family ate their meat and potatoes.
As I started learning more, I slowly stopped eating meat, then chicken, eggs, and eventually seafood, out of compassion. I learned that as a society we are generally malnourished because we aren’t eating enough vegetables and fruits.
Be sure and eat your colors!
Barry and I have raised our two children in the vegan lifestyle. As any conscious family, we do all we can to conserve and recycle. We think it is the best way to raise a family; with compassion and caring.
Now, we want to do for the community what we've been doing for our family.
The world is an imperfect place. Many of us feel the weight of responsibility but we can’t fix everything. So we do our small part whenever we can because each small choice adds up.
For example, we used our old fence as a headboard; we purchase secondhand and use glassware and bags rather than plastics whenever possible; and when a to go container is needed and glass isn’t possible it is always compostable.
The idea behind Sanctuary is to raise awareness and provide a place for likeminded people to share and spread this philosophy that each decision we make adds up. All dishes are sustainable, taste delicious, and humane for the planet.
In creating Sanctuary, we provide a place for Bay Area residents to be able to gather, and eat out knowing you are making good choices for your health and the environment.
These are some of the things we do in our household to do our part to stay green:
- Solar-powered office and home
- Use reusable bakeware for meal planning or compostable ware when necessary
- Eat vegan
- Use organic and local ingredients
- We compost
- Shop with reusable shopping bags
- Buying in bulk

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Starting a restaurant is hard-work. It is not a 9-5 job. It is a constant work in progress that needs continual care, attention to detail and a love for food. Chef Barry's 17 years of experience as a chef along with Jennifer's skills in event planning, education and outreach, give us the expertise we need to make this endeavor successful. We love what we do. Everyday may bring a challenge but we are excited to face them. We give 110% into everything that we do.
The biggest challenge that we need to face is making it through the first 6 months - the most difficult time for a restaurant. This kickstarter is going to help us make it through... along with determination, drive, passion and compassion.
Together as a family we are ready to face anything!
Great Question and thanks for asking. Sidney Garza Hillman of the Sid Hillman Quartet.
