For twelve years I obsessively carried a heavy, modified Nikon film camera with a powerful flash on it everywhere I went. I traveled to small town fairs, parades, public gatherings- Shot on the street and snuck my way into parties and gala events everywhere I could.
I never looked through the camera, but rather placed it near the scene with my outstretched arm, clicked the shutter and popped the flash. I don’t know any of the people in these pictures and I never asked anyone if I could shoot and people’s responses over the years varied from great interest and feelings of total flattery to invasion of privacy, near violence and even an unwarranted arrest.
In the end, and after photographing ten or so thousand people- hangs “Isolated Gesture” which has been collected by or shown in The Museum of Photographic Arts, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Lucie Foundation, Fort Collins Museum of Art, The Center for Photographic Arts, The Center for Fine Art Photography, The Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts, Newspace Center for Photography, The Portland Museum of Art and many others.

“Since Garry Winogrand, Larry Fink, Diane Arbus, William Klein and so many others, the aesthetic of the “wrong” has become accepted practice in photography. Aggressive framing, dramatic contrast, unconventional subjects, unflattering shots—all have become comfortably ensconced in the standard repertoire. These photographers—and Zelman positions himself among them- are agitators of a related sort, purposely getting it wrong in one way so as to get it right in another, disrupting visual order to ignite a kind of visceral disorder.

The book will be exquisitely offset printed from duotone plates by one of the best printers on the West Coast, limited to 750 with each one hand numbered and signed. (Books can be personalized if you wish as well). Having produced dozens of international ad campaigns- I know both the process and printer very well and will be “on press” overseeing every page and insuring it’s perfect. A beautifully penned introduction by art writer Leah Ollman opens the book. (Full version at Saatchi Gallery here).
Oversized 9 1/2" by 12", 144 pages of Duotone plates, hardbound linen cover with foil stamp on spine, slipcover with cover image and title, stitched "Smyth sewn" seams, and "perfect bound" so the pages lay flat. A book can't be made any nicer than this.
I was a total darkroom nerd for two decades and labored endlessly over these prints usually only being able to print one or two images in an entire day. The museum prints are meticulously dodged and burned and printed on double weight, archival printing paper with deep, warm blacks.
The digital prints I’m offering to raise funds for the books are printed from the same huge scans that the book will print from and are, of course, archival as well. They will be printed on FujiFilm Crystal Archive paper at a pro-lab- NOT less expensive ink-jet prints.

After so many years and thousands of hours spent and many tens of thousands of dollars it’s my dream to print this book here on Kickstarter knowing that others are as excited about the project as I am. I’ve walked away from two fine art publishing deals upon realizing that they wanted to “help” edit, curate, choose covers etc…While I’ve been adamant that the person feeling the things he did when he shot, edited and printed the images needs to be one to see it all the way through. This project- Somewhat dark, moody and disconnected at times was an enormous extension of my life at the time and I hope you’ll want a print or copy of the book for yourself.
This project is my proudest achievement and I’m pulling all the stops to make it a collectors quality printing.

Risks and challenges
Shipping prints is always risky as damage can occur- Each print will be shipped in a very durable tube, but should yours arrive in less than perfect condition a replacement print will be shipped to you immediately
In the case of the 16x20 prints- Many are in Museum's and collections and while I don't anticipate selling out the series of ten, I will let you know immediately if the print you've requested is not available- Then ask for a second choice or offer a full refund.
The prints will arrive late November or early December and I fully anticipate the book shipping the last week of December, but quality book binding can take time and it's possible it won't deliver until January.
The same guarantee that your print will arrive undamaged goes for the book as well of course.
