About this project
- Creating a backpackers hostel in Leavenworth, Washington
- Budget accommodation near downtown
- Creator is a long term local resident, and an eco-conscious hospitality professional.
Güte Hostel will be a backpacker's hostel in Leavenworth, Washington. It will have gathering spaces, breakfast, laundry facilities, an open kitchen, gear storage and shuttle services. A backpacker's hostel is for the adventurer, offering overnight lodging in a bunk style room at a fraction of the price of a hotel. $35 a night.
Güte Hostel will provide peace of mind; with secure gear storage, shuttle service to and from nearby trail heads, and pick-up and drop-off from the local train station.
Güte (German): means kindness
Creating a culture of kindness is the primary motivation for this mountain hiker's pursuit. Striving to connect cultures, help preserve our natural resources, welcome visitors and provide affordable lodging. All of these intersect in my dream to open a hostel for you.
Leavenworth doesn't have a hostel. How in the world does Leavenworth not have a backpacker's hostel? In a Bavarian theme town? Hostels are so European. I believe there is a need. I believe opening a hostel in Leavenworth will benefit everyone. My years working on trail maintenance crews, raising children in town, hiking the local trails and working in hospitality here in Leavenworth have given me a dream and a passion to create and run a hostel in my sweet mountain village of Leavenworth, Washington.
Leavenworth, Washington is home to less than 3,000 residents, yet hosts almost 2 million tourists annually. Leavenworth is a sweet Bavarian themed town nestled against the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. Access to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the Wenatchee River, many climbing spots, mountain bike trails, and day hikes all out the back door. The Pacific Crest Trail is just up the highway. Most visitors to my festival filled town are outdoor enthusiasts, here to play on the local trails, rivers, roadways and rock faces.
With your help I will open a backpacker's hostel in Leavenworth, Washington to offer affordable adventure lodging for you, my fellow outdoor lovers; hikers, climbers, kayakers, backpackers, river rafters, cyclists, mountain bikers and all outdoor enthusiasts who travel here to play in the amazing natural surroundings.
When I picture Güte hostel I envision welcoming smiles and helpful staff. It will smell like chocolate cake or freshly made granola. There will be cozy bunks with a place to plug in your phone and a curtain to give you privacy and space. There will be awesome water pressure in the shower and fragrance free shampoo and body wash, because being in the backcountry and smelling perfume can be an assault to the nose. The common area will be cozy and friendly with a roaring fireplace in the winter. Breezes will blow through the windows from spring until fall. You can play guitar, play chess, plan your day over a map or an app, laugh over photos on your phone, share adventures and plan new ones with a newly made friend or two. The whole point of Güte Hostel is to be safe, to be clean and very friendly. To be a meeting ground. A place to relax and refuel. Safe lockers will be in the guest rooms, and a washer and dryer available for use. A simple breakfast will be provided or a fabulous breakfast option will be available for purchase.
All for $35 a night.
When you purchase a pre-paid stay you will be sent a reusable room key card with the Güte Hostel logo. These will be usable each time you stay at Güte Hostel. They will be a tangible piece of what is to come.
All the graphic rewards (except the pen) can be shipped to you. Shipping will be an additional charge.
The paver brick can have your name, your organization or company name, or a kind word.
The Bunk Designers reward will be an exclusive group. Each member will work with me to choose from a pre-selected list of colors, fabrics, shelves and fixtures. Each designer will decide with me what artwork will go on the wall. I look forward to getting to know this special group and creating individual spaces that will offer warmth and comfort to so many!

Risks and challenges
**One of the main hurdles in site selection is the requirement for adequate parking. Downtown Leavenworth has a desperate need for more parking. Any lodging structure will have to provide enough parking spaces for guests and employees.
**I might keel over from excitement.
**Real estate prices are increasing very rapidly.
**Complying with our Old World Bavarian Alpine theme and passing the design review board for exterior signage, which is actually a fun challenge.
**Zoning will be a factor for licensing and permits. Many details are site specific.
**Choosing and purchasing a suitable property/structure for renovation.
**Building contractors and subcontractors arriving on time and in the right order can be difficult, and sometimes inspections don't pass the first time. These factors could bump out the opening date.
