About this project
At 100% funding we will be adding a $6 incentive tier specifically to pre-order a copy of Sorrow Pants! Domestic and International shipping WILL be included in this price.
Let's get to our goal and start talking pre-orders!
A zine (pronounced ZEEN) is a self-made publication that can cover any topic-or many topics-of the writer's choosing. It is normally hand-bound and printed off in quantities as large as possible to receive a bulk rate discount. Zines have been a large part of the underground punk scene since the late '70's but have since branched out to appeal to writers and illustrators of all kinds as a form of creative self-expression. Independent publications and tracts date back as far as the printed word. Benjamin Franklin's Farmer's Almanac could be considered a zine as it was self-published and self-distributed.
Karley Bayer, Keith Landrum, Deirdree Prudence, and Tina Armstrong have all been in the zine scene for years. They all have their own collaboration zines (which is a submission-based format that allows for different people with different perspectives to have their voices heard) on the side and all have been successful for the past 3 years, winning accolades and reader's hearts city by city, town by town, state by state, and country by country.
Making zines for them is not only a passion, but a way of life. The only problem is that making zines costs money and that, even though they have a legion of fans it still takes a lot of money to keep and maintain a zine. Because zines are usually traded, sold for low prices or given away for free, readership tends to be the greater currency than money. Because of this fact, a person's passion for making zines doesn't always end up being a self-sustaining one.
Donations will be used for printing costs, as we would like to be together geographically when we print them so we can print at the cheapest price possible because of bulk rates. We plan on printing out 1000 copies of our first issue and distributing them all over the world, quite literally.
Most zine libraries and distribution sites (usually bookstores that also carry zines or zine-only "distros") will carry and sell your zine but will not pay for the shipping costs to send them over. A part of the donations will be utilized for sending the zine out to different zine library and distribution sites all over the United States (Quimby's in Chicago, Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia, Boneshaker Books in Los Angeles, Multnomah Library in Portland, etc.) and also all over internationally (Salford Zine Library, Rotherham Zine Library, and Canny Little Zine Library in the U.K., The Anarchist Zine Library in Serbia, etc.)
We believe that with our combined writing talents, our varied formats of writing, our intricate and thoughtful layouts, and our already-formed fan base that our zine, Sorrow Pants, will be nothing short of success in not only the zine world but also branching out into the mainstream publishing world as well.
