About this project
Is SURF STORY II the biggest baddest book of surf, art, story and culture ever? And where did Surf Story Project https://www.facebook.com/pages/SURF-STORY-PROJECT/104626221443 come from and why make a massive book or better yet, two massive books? surfstoryproject.com
In 2007, while fighting for my own artistic rights against a massive corporate clothing brand which had taken, reproduced and profited from the use of my art, (like they had done to so many surf brands and artists before) I was inspired to begin to document and connect creatives throughout surf culture's history. Certainly world culture has been inspired and influenced by our culture's contribution for more than 60 years, much of that coming via the creatives: artists, filmmakers, writers, photographers, personalities etc.. We all know how the corporate world and media have cashed in on it to the tune of billions of $.
So why wasn't there any significant documentation or archive of this history? If you look over the years at all the bits and pieces of media, there is the puzzle of published material which gives you a pretty good taste, but it is spread out over a thousands of magazines and books etc.. Surfers tend to gather in small groups (tribes), exclusive to their home break or region and to their close friends. So that's how the history has been documented.
My idea was to bring as much of this great history of creative personalities from our culture under one roof, and connect everybody, much like neural synapses do in the brain. I believed there was something significant about connecting all the elements and flipping the switch so to speak. This was my inspiration, and I thought the first steps required to creating a catalog, and then to see what would happen.
With SURF STORY Vol.1, the answer came after a couple years curating, designing and publishing this massive book on my own…people were blown away, and realized how significant it was. But it was only the beginning, as the pool of talent, art and stories is bottomless. So after another 4 years of work I've come to the end of this incredible 540+ page follow up to the first book. It surpasses the first in every way. Most obviously because it is almost 100 pages bigger. But it also includes a beautiful, more broad spectrum of creatives, and does far better at showcasing the incredibly eclectic culture that exists within surfing and surfers.
The funny thing is that even with the daunting challenge of making that first book and facing the naysayers and resistance, I had found myself revelling in the challenges and could see the finished piece and knew how great it was going to be.
That motivated me and I finished it in a little over 2 years, which, for a book of that size featuring so many contributors in pretty fast.
Recent years saw me being freshly inspired as a new focus was to come into my life. I was to be a father. I'm happy to say that the experiences to our daughter Marin these past 5 years is by far the greatest creation of my(our) life, and in a very beautiful way, she too is a vital part of the Surf Story Project as we watch her thrive as a colorful, beautiful example, of our Lifestyle and Culture
SURF STORY II, as I sit here looking at the layouts, ready to go to press is humbling for me to examine. With that first book, I felt that it surpassed a decade of my paintings and design, mostly because I thought it offered so much more to our culture than anything I could say as an individual artist. It was about something bigger than me. It was about US as a tribe.
With this second book, my goal was simple: Make it bigger and better. Without a doubt Surf Story Vol 2 is not like anything I have ever seen, even Vol 1.
Together SSI and SSII contain nearly 1000 pages, almost 300 surf stories, over 1500 pieces of fine art and photography, and feature more than 200 of the greatest surfing creatives and icons.
Please help me celebrate our culture again, by contributing to the printing of this massive archive of art and story. The books are a remarkable time capsule piece representing what I think may be destined as the most dynamic and eclectic culture in history.
By helping print this book I know you will feel good knowing that you were a part of supporting something as joyous, culturally valuable and significant as being a co-creator of the Surf Story Project, our ongoing mission to not just own our culture, but to share our story and Art with the world as a group. That matters more than anything I or each of us could do on our own.
Risks and challenges
Any possible risks come with potential delays or complications printing and shipping the book to the US. As this is the second time around for me printing Surf Story these potential delays are usually small and easily mitigated and managed. Other potential issues with producing and shipping art and other rewards are also extremely minor as I work with professionals and have almost 20 years experience designing, producing and distributing. I stand by my reputation and with a project as massive as this if I were anything less than highly competent and responsible none of this would even exist.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
