The Glynn Art Association, located in the village area of St. Simons Island, Ga, is raising funds to help defray the costs of their upcoming art retrospective of one of St. Simons most beloved residents, cartoonist JACK DAVIS. Our goal is to raise the minimum amount necessary to pay for the expenses associated with this show, and any additional money raised will be applied to the general fund of GAA to support efforts to present more shows of this caliber.
Mr. Davis, one of the most prolific contributors to the legendary EC COMICS (TWO-FISTED TALES, FRONTLINE COMBAT, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, MAD--to name a few) is equally famous for his work as an illustrator, producing covers for magazines like TV GUIDE and TIME, album covers, movie posters, animated cartoon model sheets, and more. But to those lucky people who have had the chance to meet or work with Jack, he is also famous for being the absolute epitome of a genial "southern gentleman."
The Glynn Art Association is proud to be honoring Jack with a retrospective of his work. The show, held in the gallery of the Glynn Art Association, will run from AUGUST 1st- AUGUST 30th. The opening reception will feature a panel discussion with special guests like Jack's longtime friend, MAD editor NICK MEGLIN and TOM RICHMOND, the current President of the National Cartoonists Society.
As per the mission statement of the Glynn Art Association, there will also be an adjoining show at the gallery, showcasing a number of other Georgia artists, including some of the artists donating rewards to our kickstarter campaign. Unlike the Jack Davis main show, artwork in this show will also be available for sale.
For more information about the show itself, including the opening reception, please contact the Glynn Art Association at
Scroll down for a gallery of images from the various rewards provided by our generous donors, including this BRAND-NEW piece by former President of the National Cartoonist's Society, ARNOLD ROTH. Arnold and Jack Davis are longtime friends, each of whom has earned master artist status in the world of cartooning. While Arnold is a New Yorker, Jack has returned to his Georgia roots. Arnold painted this watercolor specifically with our Kickstarter project in mind. Artist representative agencies in NYC have estimated this fine work of art at $2500-3500, making this a real bargain!!
The next print was temporarily snatched up, but it is available once again--and is just as amazing an offer as before, thanks to the generosity of artist PAUL HUDSON.
Risks and challenges
My name is Bob Pendarvis and I was asked by the Glynn Art Association to help with their fundraising efforts. Perhaps my greatest contribution was my knowledge that even the best laid kickstarter plans can sometimes go wrong. Many of the rewards connected to my own successfully funded kickstarter project, A GIRL CALLED ANA TEACHES KITTENS HOW TO DRAW, are only just now finally shipping out--seven months later (ouch!).
My experience gave me a great insight when designing this JACK DAVIS campaign. Almost ALL of the rewards have already been completed and/or collected BEFORE the launching of our kickstarter campaign, and the few artists who are donating commissioned illustrations have pledged to have their work ready for shipping by September (the month immediately following the Jack Davis art show). Additional rewards, such as signed copies of various JACK DAVIS art and comics anthologies, are already being collected and there should be NO delays in anyone receiving their rewards.
"GOT YOUR BACK, JACK!" Fans of Jack Davis who just want to show their support with this pledge amount will have their names listed on one of two special oversized cards presented to Jack at the opening reception of the show.
UGA alumni pledging this amount will have their name listed on one of two special oversized cards (one just for UGA alumni only) that will be presented to Jack at the opening reception of the show. Also includes a copy of the poster of the show.
