Artemisia Gentileschi (b. Rome, 8 July 1593; d. Naples, 1652/3) was one of the most gifted painters of the 17th century. Her life story is one of remarkable courage, talent and perseverance. She was the daughter of the famed Orazio Gentileschi and possessed a stylistic similarity to Caravaggio. She lived in the most important cities in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples) as well as London. She was also an intimate friend of a number of important musicians including Francesca Caccini and Nicholas Lanier (who was also her lover) and was present at a number of events in which music was an important segment.
As is well documented Artemisia was the victim of abuse and rape. Although she sued her attacker, the trial itself was tortuous, yet in the end she was victorious and consequently became one of the first independent women in western culture. She traveled widely, took commissions and was in control of her finances. And throughout her life music was an extremely important component.
For this project El Mundo will record a selection of music from the cities in which Artemisia resided. From Rome the music by Giovanni Kapsberger and additional selections from the Vatican archives; from Florence: works by the Caccini family performed at Medici celebrations; from Venice: the music of Monteverdi and Biagio Marini; from London: the music of Nicolas Lanier and Charles Coleman; and finally, from Naples the music of Andrea Falconieri and selected Italian villanelle and Spanish villancicos.
This recording will feature the wonderful voices of Jennifer Ellis Kampani, Celine Ricci, Nell Snaidas, and Paul Shipper. Virtuoso string pyrotechnics will be ever present in violin and cello work of Adam LaMotte, Lisa Grodin and William Skeen. And of course there are the pluckers: John Schneiderman, Corey Jamason (harpsichord), yours truly Richard Savino, and some additional guests who will be pickin' & grinnin' throughout.
The funds raised will be used to fly and house musicians (12); to pay for studio time, engineers and producers. We will have already performed this program but will need a short period period of additional rehearsal followed by the recording in Marin County, August 20 - 22.
