Hauled Off: A Documentary film
Interview style, current events / crime / collapse. The story of a man losing everything he owns, while preparing for the end of industrial civilization. Our protagonist has been studying collapse since witnessing the twin towers being destroyed ten years ago. In an effort to understand the events that have shaped US foreign policy he discovers the dire implications of Peak Oil, climate change and economic collapse. After studying these issues intensely he responds by preparing for what he believes is the inevitable decline of our modern civilization. Those preparations include survival classes at the Tom Brown Jr. Tracker School, defensive firearms training, unarmed combat training, food, water and equipment stock piling, and eventually moving from the major city of Los Angeles to a small city outside of Seattle, Washington. While signing a lease on a new apartment, his moving truck containing all his material possessions is stolen and he is left with nothing. Suffering a total loss and contemplating ideas ranging from Zen non-attachment to murderous revenge; he manages to survive the experience gaining more inner personal strength while at the same time losing anxiety about the turbulent crises facing humanity. Ideas of community taught at a Permaculture Design Course year's prior guide him towards a new simpler more constructive and useful life. The lessons learned and the perspective gained can be shared and may have value to others dealing with dramatic losses and disruptions of ones life plan, all in the context of a disintegrating / transitioning society. The subject of the documentary is a veteran of the Hollywood visual effects industry, and visual performance artist. Stylistically the film will have moments showcasing that creativity. The story will mostly be told through the voices of those interviewed. Act one: establish the concept and evidence for the collapse of civilization. Act two: crime happens and personal collapse strikes, protagonist deals with challenge by making the movie, telling the story, and accepting the new circumstances. Act three: embracing the personal collapse and transforming to a new paradigm with principles of Permaculture and Zen simplicity guiding the way to surviving the systemic societal breakdown.
