The "My Childhood" project includes three short films directed by Iryna Pravylo based on stories by writers from Ukraine, Georgia and Italy.
The main heroes of the films are 6, 11 and 15 year old boys. Because of difficult life circumstances all three of them continue their further life without their father or both parents. The events take place in a postwar period.
We find the boys during the development of understanding themselves, their connection with the eternity, with their families and native lands.
We are witnessing how the heroes begin to realize themselves, their calling and destination, all the complexity of the world and the importance of a complete family.
The leading roles in films are performed by the inhabitants of the locations where the movies have been filmed.
Two films of the trilogy have already been finished: Peasant's angel - A Christmas story based on the story by the Ukrainian writer Stepan Vasylchenko and Blood, based on the story by the Georgian writer Nodar Dumbadze.
In October 2014, 80% of the third part of the trilogy – “My university“, based on the story by the Italian author Nino Palumbo was filmed in Tuscany, Italy.
This story is about the incomprehensible force of blood, especially its calling. The protagonist - 11 year old boy Nodar lost his parents and now has to choose if he either lives with his grandmother (his mother's mom) or grandfather (his father's dad ).
This Christmas story is about the six year old boy Ivanko who is waiting for a miracle. More than anything Ivanko wants kutya (Ukrainian Christmas dish) with honey on Christmas Eve. But it is the postwar period outside and the boy lives alone with his mother. Ivanko goes to church where he sees the icon of the Peasant's Angel. He begins to talk to the Angel and asks him for "at least one cracked pot of honey."
15-year-old Giovanni lives with his family in central Italy in the postwar period. His father died during the war that recently ended. A young man reads "Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri, a book Giovanni inherited from his father. He tries to understand the deeper meaning of the work of the famous Florentine.
When the idea of the project was born in 2010, it was hard to imagine that stories of children of war will be so similar and close to current Ukrainian history.
The peculiarity of the project is that the authors are trying not only to raise questions but also to find answers. We find heroes in difficult times, but are also witnessing important events in their lives and on the path of their personal development.
The first two parts of the trilogy were already shown at many film forums in Ukraine and around the world and we won such prestigious awards as:
- Order of Honor from the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili "for the contribution to cultural cooperation between Ukraine and Georgia";
- Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine "for significant creative achievement";
- Medal of the President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano “For the contribution in development of world cinema”. /63rd International Film Festival of short films in Montecatini (Italy)
