Why This Book is Important
1. Our book engages children with the natural world, by fostering a personal relationship with an amazing wild orangutan in the Borneo rainforest
2. Our book inspires loving action in children, and adults, to care for the land and wildlife, especially endangered species.
3. Our book will help the cause of keeping orangutans from becoming extinct, by educating the future generation, and by an ongoing communication with several non-profit orangutan protection organizations.
Orangutan: A Day in the Rainforest Canopy educates as well as inspires.
This book introduces the colorful and exotic rainforest to young readers. The story arc follows a young orangutan and his parents on an adventurous romp from sunrise to sunset, filled with harrowing escapes from Clouded Leopard, lively swinging through the canopy searching for food, and dramatic encounters with other Borneo wildlife. These interesting details add to the personal connection this book fosters. And from this connection, readers will be encouraged to care for Mother Earth and her animals so they may thrive for years to come!
The book will be published by Dancing Dakini Press, a publisher dedicated to inspiring love and care for Mother Nature, wildlife, and all beings.
The bushes rustle below. Clouded Leopard! With a loud squeak, Orangutan scurries up the tree. He uses his long fingers to grasp the branches and wraps his big toes around them like thumbs. Higher and higher he climbs, with Mother and Father close behind.

How the Kickstarter Money will be Used
Funds will be used to print Orangutan: A Day in the Rainforest Canopy in a high-quality, hardcover format -- a book to be treasured for many years to come. I'll also use funds to help market and distribute the book, and pay for the editor, designer and videographer
Printing a high quality book in color is costly and well worth it. Dancing Dakini Press has an environmentally-friendly printer lined up. One thousand books will cost approximately $5000. The remainder of the funds will cover costs to promote the book, shipping and distribution fees, and marketing materials. Dancing Dakini Press and I want to reach as wide an audience as possible. To that end, we will promote the book worldwide, to schools and libraries, bookstores, nature centers, nonprofits, and more. We are looking to grow and affiliate with educational and nature oriented organizations.
Risks and challenges
Once my book is funded, Dancing Dakini Press will be going straight into a contract with the chosen printer. They've printed books before and so are confident with this part of the process. Dancing Dakini Press and I value high quality, and getting everything right, especially the colors. Extra costs and delays may happen if more than one round of proofing is needed.
The next big challenge is getting the books into the world. By the time the printed books arrive, we will be in full swing to market the books. Dancing Dakini Press has done this before and report that it’s very time-consuming work. The main challenge is getting the book reviewed by the key reviewers, thus getting the book known to key buyers, such as schools and libraries.
I have gotten very favorable reviews on my past two books, so I will approach the same reviewers, plus several more. Another way to get the book known to these important venues is to submit the book for numerous awards. Finally, we will pursue many other channels to market the book, such as social networking and press releases. We favor a multi-faceted approach to marketing; therefore we’ll pursue as many channels as possible.
Once the book is printed, Dancing Dakini Press will send it off to their distributor New Leaf Distribution. This company has distributed a similar title from Dancing Dakini Press in 2013. Dancing Dakini Press will also submit the book to Mariposa Press in France. This publisher is distributing another title of theirs throughout Europe and I’m confident they will love this book too.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
