About this project
IN A NUTSHELL:
Maidentrip is an unusual documentary that draws inspiration from narrative film and various other mediums. The film follows a young girl's extraordinary two-year sailing odyssey around the world through a mix of live action and animation. Maidentrip is many things: a character study, a coming-of-age-story, a journey of discovery and self-discovery, a love letter to the open sea...and more.
This project is in the late stages of pre-production--we need a brilliant 5-minute funding trailer to secure fiscal sponsorship for Maidentrip and apply for grants and other funding!!
THAT'S WHERE YOU COME IN...
We need $5000 (in addition to $5000 already raised in in-kind contributions of equipment and services!) to produce a beautiful, compelling five-minute funding trailer that will represent the look, feel, themes and narrative arc to prospective grant-giving organizations and other funders of the feature length film.
THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL:
-UNLESS WE RAISE $5000 BY JUNE 11, THIS PROJECT WILL NOT BE FUNDED.
PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL SO THAT THIS FILM CAN BE AS DARING AND BEAUTIFUL AS OUR VISION FOR IT!!
THE SAME THING IN A BIT MORE DETAIL:
"I just want to explore and get to know the world a little bit. To just sort of live a free life." -Laura Dekker, 14
"This idea of making a movie about these moments that only happen one time...these fleeting moments. There's a lot on the line in those moments. There's a lot of risk in those moments. How do we witness this life that's only gonna be here one time?" -Derek Cianfrance, Filmmaker
LAURA DEKKER’S DREAM IS TO SAIL AROUND THE WORLD ALONE...

OP-ED: How Young Is Too Young to Sail Around the World Alone?
OUR DREAM IS TO MAKE A FILM ABOUT IT.
MAIDENTRIP chronicles the extraordinary story of 14-year-old Laura Dekker’s quest to be the youngest person to sail around the world alone. Through a groundbreaking mix of live action and animation, the film explores both the dramatic expedition of a fearless young sailor on the world’s ultimate voyage and the profound emotional odyssey of a young woman alone for two years in the strange, majestic, unpredictable world of the open sea.
BUT UNLIKE LAURA, WE CAN’T DO IT ALONE.
Filmmaking of any kind is always a collaborative effort, but grassroots independent filmmaking absolutely relies on the support of an active and passionate community, one that shares a belief in a story and the dream of seeing it come to life.
Because of all the excitement and passion the story has inspired, we've been able to do a lot with very little but we need your help to take it further.
COME ABOARD. KICKSTART AN ADVENTURE...
A great funding trailer truly is the first step to making our dream a reality. Here’s how:
A pitch reel is the most important element of our application for fiscal sponsorship. Fiscal sponsorship will provide Maidentrip with 501c3 status which will then make it possible for the film to receive grant-funding and other tax-deductible contributions. With a selective fiscal sponsor like Women Make Movies or Arts Engine (which provide multifaceted support and make a serious investment in the success of all their sponsored films) we will have greater resources and chances for fruitful grant-seeking efforts. We are confident that with a well-produced pitch reel, fiscal sponsors as well as prospective grant sources, like NYSCA and Cinereach, will be able to see and share in our vision for the film and help us see it to fruition!
KICKSTART THE IDEA THAT ALL DREAMS ARE POSSIBLE.
With your support, we will be able to make our pitch reel that much more compelling. We can do things like produce a day-long shoot at sea, get an on-camera interview with Laura in the Netherlands, and produce full animation samples to include in the pitch so that prospective fiscal sponsors and funding sources can really see what we want to do with the film.
