Put a psycho in a War, what's the worst that could happen?
Black Label #1 - 'The Wailing Wall' - during the Vietnam War, a Firebase is under siege in one of the longest and bloodiest battles ever! Supplies & ammo run low amid the onslaught. Tensions run high - pushing men to breaking point! Put a psycho in a war, what's the worst that could happen?

Black Label #2 - 'Soldiers of Misfortune'
"We kill people who kill people, because killing people is wrong!"
In 1982 a random group of psychopaths were sent to prison for the crimes they’d each committed. Living on a diet of 80’s television, they formed the belief that together they were a unit of crack commandos. These nut-jobs escaped from a maximum security prison for the criminally insane and have been on the run ever since. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if they find you, be sure to avoid… the Soldiers of Misfortune
Black Label #2, the 'Soldiers of Misfortune' comic, also features a special appearance of the sexy & blood-thirsty Vampire 'Sisters'!!!

Resizing from magazine size to US comic book format
Launching with the Black Label #1 issue 'The Wailing Wall' - originally presented as a 16-page story in DECAY #20, now with a bonus 8 extra pages, expanding on the action, gore, violence, dark humour and horror! Making one of the best ever stories in DECAY even better! Also includes bonus material (notes, sketches, etc)!
Issue #2 is 'Soldiers of Misfortune', collecting the two back-to-back stories from DECAY #23 and #24. Originally known as 'The F**k-Ups', their 'origin' story (from DECAY #23) has been coloured for the first time. An all-new exclusive two-page story ties it all together. Also includes bonus material (notes, sketches, etc)!
The original comics were printed at a larger 'magazine' size, but the page ratio was different. So the new 'Black Label' comics needed each page to be formatted and resized. At times this included extending the art. All text and speech bubble placements were adjusted to fit.
Overall it has been a lot of work. Some stories were in B&W and have been coloured for the first time ever. 'The Wailing Wall' even has eight extra brand new pages of script written and drawn and inserted into the story, expanding the original 16-page story to 24-pages for the first time ever (in a 32-page comic book, counting the front cover as page 1).
I could fill this page with more 'Testimonials' (letters of support and recommendations by peers and industry professionals), but instead I'll just say to look at the previous Kickstarter for 'DECAY #24' (April 2018) and check out the amazing testimonials there by some industry legends! Head to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467328161/decay-24?ref=discovery&term=decay%20%2324 to read testimonials from Dan Berger (managing editor, Heavy Metal magazine, 2014), Pat Mills ("the godfather of British comics", creator of 2000AD and much much more), Gary Chaloner (Cyclone Comics, Australian Comics Journal, Ledger Awards), Luke Sparke (movie producer/writer/director), Chris Brown (Producer/ CEO Pictures in Paradise) and more!
About DARK OZ
DARK OZ is Australia's longest running modern indie comics publisher and the BIGGEST and BEST showcase of both stories and talent (with over 150 creators featured so far in over 2,000 pages of material), producing the anthology comics DECAY and Retro Sci-Fi Tales.
DARK OZ was established in 2009 by Darren Koziol, and the first comic, DECAY #1, was released in March 2010. 24 issues of DECAY have been produced - at 52-pages per issue, with NO adverts. DECAY contains an incredible wealth of horror stories - around 180 stories in total throughout the comics - the 'best' of these stories will now be remastered into the 'Black Label' series. Also seven issues of 'Retro Sci-Fi Tales' so far, with issue #8 to be released in September 2019. And many other titles: Cthulhu, Sisters, nine variant San Diego Comic Con 2016 comics, Silver City (MAD MAX Fan Magazine), the Black Label series, and more...
The BEST stories from DECAY are now being collected, remastered, coloured, re-lettered and extended for the new series of 'DARK OZ Black Label Edition' comic books.
Darren Koziol - from Adelaide, South Australia. Darren is the creator, editor & publisher of DARK OZ comics, since 2009 (first issue released March 2010). Darren writes many of the stories - he has work in every issue, and has been published in several other books/comics, including Heavy Metal Magazine. He is a dreamer and storyteller. While producing the comics he also does the speech bubbles, lettering and design work. He is the face of DARK OZ comics at conventions nationally.
Dave Dye - from country Victoria and with an Army background, Dave is a genuine Aussie bloke and a fantastic artist. He also writes his own stories and comics. He has work in many DARK OZ comics, both DECAY and Retro Sci-Fi Tales, and the new Black Label series.
Ben Sullivan - from Melbourne, an amazingly talented artist, fast and varied, working traditionally in pencils, inks, ink wash, paints, etc. He can work digitally too but prefers to get his hands dirty and likes the feel of traditional mediums on paper. Since starting work for DARK OZ comics, in 2015, Ben has been one of the main featured artists.
Jeff Edis - from Perth, Western Australia. Jeff is a full time graphic designer and a long time fan of comic books, especially Australian comics. And WOW his work in the Black Label comics is amazing! His colouring of the 'Soldiers of Misfortune' (both stories in the one comic: 'Run Through the Jungle' and 'Southern Comfort') is brilliant and vibrant.

Michal Dutkiewicz - resizing pages of 'Soldiers of Misfortune'
Russell Bennett - cover artist for 'The Wailing Wall' Limited Edition
DECAY by DARK OZ
DECAY is Australia's #1 independent comic book series, Australia's favourite comics anthology, Australia's leading independent comic book in terms of sales, page count, number of issues, creators featured, etc. The 'Black Label' series will be collecting the BEST stories from DECAY (some hard to find sold-outissues) and remastering them into new one-shot comics at standard US comic book size.
DECAY is Australia's longest running modern independent comic book series, the biggest and best showcase of Australian comic book talent - 52-pages per issue (over 1,200 pages in total) with over 150 creators featured!!! Published by DARK OZ, every issue is a showcase of the incredible talent Australia has to offer (with the odd international guest too) - this is like "a who's who" of Australian creators. These anthology comics are fully self contained, with several short stories per issue - now being expanded for the 'Black Label' series.
DARK OZ takes its comic books to conventions all across Australia, and was the only Australian exhibitor at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) 2016, with nine limited edition SDCC variant comic books. These are high quality world class comics. Other DARK OZ titles include 'DECAY' (24 issues), 'Retro Sci-Fi Tales' (seven issues out so far, full colour old-school sci-fi stories), 'Cthulhu' (a one-shot anthology, four stories of Cthulhu), 'Sisters' (the Vampire girls from DECAY get their own title - a 32-page one-shot of Vampires versus Bush-Rangers, set in Australia in 1881), and 'Sliver City' (the worlds first Mad Max fan magazine - two issues out so far).
DARK OZ showcases and supports Australian creators (along with the odd international guest), publishing established professionals alongside new emerging talent. DARK OZ has worked with film, run art exhibitions, organised conventions, regularly holds creator signing sessions, and attends conventions everywhere!
San Diego Comic Con exclusives (back in 2016)
DARK OZ was the only Australian exhibitor at San Diego Comic Con in 2016 - offering exclusive limited edition Australian comics at the world's biggest comic convention! The popularity of these rare US sized anthology comics has led to the creation of the BLACK LABEL series.
Film and television
DARK OZ has already worked with several film properties and we are keen to do more - story-boarding, comic book adaptations, prequels, sequels, spin-off stories, etc.
Hollywood needs new ideas, and there are plenty of great stories in these comics for television series' or feature films.
Risks and challenges
No risks, only a possible small delay in posting orders - as I'm so busy in June attending conventions etc, so it might take me a little longer to logistically sort, pack and post all orders. If not June then they will go out in July, guaranteed!!!
There are NO risks for this project - it is guaranteed to go ahead - the comics are already finished and ready for print. Darren Koziol (as DARK OZ) has been producing comic books for ten years - you can't make this many comics unless you have the support and respect of so many amazing creators - so you know we're reliable
The 'Black Label' comics will go ahead whether the Kickstarter is funded or not (though be sure to jump on fast to secure your copies of the first collector items). DARK OZ has produced dozens of high quality world-class comics before without Kickstarter support or promotion - 24 issues of DECAY, seven issues of Retro Sci-Fi Tales, nine San Diego special comics, various other one-shots and other titles.
The 'Black Label' comics are scheduled to go to print in May/June 2019. We use local printers (always supporting Australian businesses and creators) with high quality and fast turnaround.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
