Hi, everybody! We are very excited to present to you our latest game FORBIDDEN UNIT. Above you can find the footage from the game. It´s a 3D isometric RPG with the turn-based combat system. If you played the original Fallout, XCOM, Shadowrun or Syndicate, you know exactly where our inspiration, core game principles and our passion for games come from.

Forbidden Unit is a complex Game with a wide range of game mechanics allowing you to enjoy the game in different ways and discover your favorite playstyle.

  • Multiple Solutions: Each mission and each task could be tackled in various ways, depend on your playstyle and creativity.
  • Divided World: Imagine the world of Mad Max meets the world of Blade Runner. The game provides a wide range of game environments, and all the elements fit in the story...
  • RPG Elements: Level Up your characters, learn new skills like Sneaking, Hacking, Throwing, Shooting different weapon types, Camouflaging, Trading and more... Unlock new dialog options based on your main statistics.
  • Inventory: All characters have their own inventory, organize your character's inventory to maximize their effectiveness and readiness. Raid loot from enemies you killed or steal from other NPCs.
  • Shopping: Buy better equipment and weapons. Negotiate better prices. Sell unwanted gear.
  • Mini Games: There are several different types of mini games and interactive objects. You can play even Eight-ball pool if you want. 

 

The game takes place in the future after the last world war. Traditional states and political division of the world is no longer exist. The Earth is largely destroyed. Some people survive behind the walls of city states, under control of the large corporations that run their entire lives. The other peoples survive in the wasteland where the only valid law is survival of the fittest.

The story is focused on four main characters. They work as mercenaries in a complicated world where the line between black and white is blurred. During the game, you will learn about past and present of each member of your group, their relationships, personal life, and why they work together.

You will accept different contracts from powerful corporations, clans, and individuals... There will be more than one way to finish contracts, and the decision is up to you. You might find dirty secrets behind the deals and refuse to finish the contract, but be prepared to face consequences.

Forbidden Unit is role-playing game with strong emphasis on story. In the game you are controlling up to four main characters, depending on the situation and your mission.  

Adventure part of the game is played in real-time, however, once you or enemy start combat, the game is switched to turn-based mode.

In the Turn-based mode, every character has a certain number of Action Points, depending on their stats, that can be used for moving, attacking or any other time-consuming action.

While not in combat you can speak to people and gather information relevant to your mission, the characters, and the world. You can trade weapons or buy equipment in the black market, steal, play mini-games, prepare for next mission or accept some little side-quests.

All characters in the game have their own Inventory. This includes also all NPCs, so if you defeat an Enemy NPC, you can loot all the weapons, magazines, and equipment. The type of armor your character is wearing determines how many slots for equipment they have and how much they can carry.

There are different types of obstacles, puzzles, and traps you will encounter. There will be also multiple ways to solve the problems. For example, electronic traps can be hacked and disabled, or you could use EMP grenade to destroy them if you have one.. Or just find a hidden way around. Failure however, may result in quick death or serious trouble.

All the items in the game can be used in different ways. You can throw or drop any item. Guns have different fire modes and ammo types, you can use many different settings to customize timing and planting of explosives, auto-turrets can be deployed on the ground to help you secure the area. Further, you can use special gear like medic kits, scanners, traps and others.

All important functionalities are easily accessible from the main screen user interface, which also supports keyboard shortcuts for those who care about maximum effectivity.

All playable characters have different stats to begin with. On each new level, you will receive points to improve your characters. You can freely improve any ability, but you should maintain some sort of specialization for your characters to give you an edge in combat and offer solutions in various situations.

The dialogue system in the game allows us to create complex and rich dialogues. Some dialogue options are available only under certain circumstances. High intelligence, perception, charisma or even luck can unlock new dialog options...  

For every mission you can take a different approach. if you opt to avoid getting involved in a face off, you can sneak through and eliminate your enemies silently, which can prove very beneficial for rescuing hostages or eliminating high-value targets before they escape.

 As the leader of the mercenary team John Frase, you will be taking dangerous missions. Your actions will balance in gray zone between good and evil, and the right decision might not be always obvious. However, you are known for taking the most difficult contracts, which no one else wants to even hear about.  

Each member of your team has a unique set of abilities, which they can use in combat situations.

We are planning to have 23 different types of weapons in the final game. Plus different kind of ammunitions. Each weapon will have different specification and effect. To use any weapon effectively, you will have to be trained for a specific type of weapon.

 

While playing the game, you will be listening to our extremely talented composer Otus Hobst. He is also the founder of industrial / cyber-metal band Minority Sound. So be sure to check them out if you like harder music styles ;)

The current state of the game:

Most of the game mechanics are fully working. The main story and dialogues have been completed. GUI is still under development, and we are planning to improve it, both visually and functionally. Many models in the game are just placeholders, including weapons, and for the final version we will replace them with more interesting and better-looking models.

Platforms:

We are aiming primarily for PC and MAC. The final game will be accessible from STEAM and GOG.

 

As you may have noticed, all rewards are digital only. We want the purpose of this campaign to be to create an amazing game in the first place. We believe you already have enough t-shirts, coffee cups, wooden boxes and USB disks. And we really want to put as much money from the campaign into the development of the game itself.  

However, we are giving you an opportunity to make the difference the development and even become a part of the game. For those of you who support us the most, we will make an in-game character with their face, and a name of their choice.

All the supporters will get the final game, plus based on your contribution also some digital extras like art-book, comics, soundtrack and full access to our forum, where we post updates about the game, read your comments and opinions.

Miniatures are tested for 3D printing, and they will be delivered in common STL format, together with source files. Source files are in blender format and contain skinned character with bones + stand. Blender is a free modeling software, so you can easily adjust miniatures to your taste, make your own poses, stands, add props. One of the advantages delivering miniatures in digital format is that you can print them cheaply at the closest 3d printing shop, in any size and using material you want.

About us:

We are an independent team from Prague, a beautiful city in Central Europe. We have more than 12 years experience in game industry. We worked for big Czech game studios on well know titles like Arma, Arma 2, Take on Helicopters, Euro Truck Simulator 2.  

We always had the passion for making and playing games, and we wanted to create our own games. That was the reason we formed Chainless Games and released our first cellphone game GBikes in 2012. GBikes sold thousands of copies, without any marketing, it was promoted by Google Play selection, and it was also licensed and localized for the Korean market. A year later we updated GBikes to Ultimate Edition with more tracks, more GBikes, and improved graphics.  

After that, we set off to make Forbidden Unit. As it is a much bigger project it required a lot of planning and prototyping on our part. We developed our system and tools for easy level editing, character management, dialogues, and items. We also implemented a stunning amount of functionality into the game.

 

Risks and challenges

Developing game is always a complex and long process. Since we are a small and independent team, time and budget are very limiting factors for us. We´ve spent more than a year building system and tools that allow us to create a game like Forbidden Unit with complex dialogues, characters, inventory, destruction techniques, interactive environment and many other features.

We have a lot of work ahead of us regarding the content itself. That´s why we need you. To bring our vision from design document to reality is not going to be easy - in fact, without your help almost impossible.

We dreamt about the game like Forbidden Unit for more than 20 years. So if you love old isometric turn-based combat strategies and adventures as much as we do, please join us and support us. Together we can make this dream a reality.
