Vervet Dance is a Philadelphia-based contemporary dance company directed by Loren Groenendaal. The dance works draw on both the legacy of modern dance and cross-cultural influences to create innovative movement vocabularies and imaginative choreographies. Vervet strikes a unique balance between classic forms, new ideas, and ancient purposes for dance. Although subject matter varies, what is characteristic of the company is an ongoing intellectual diligence meeting a curious playfulness and an exploration of the visual and visceral components of dance.
For your delight, on April 13, 2013 Vervet Dance will host their grand opening dance performance at Mascher Space Cooperative. Vervet Dance will be performing works choreographed by Loren Groenendaal, Ornamentation (premiered 2010) danced by Lora Allen, Emily Herchenroether, Mutia Riasinta Hite, Mary O'Brien, Katherine Kiefer Stark, Kelly Turner, and Megan Wilson Stern; and Installment 1 (premiered 2011) performed by Loren Groenendaal with special guest New York City-based Melinda Faylor on accordion. Loren will also perform a new structured mixed-media improvisational piece with the working title, tape work (premiering in 2013) with special guest percussionist from Boston, flandrew fleisenberg . This concert will also feature the work by other regional companies, including work of two Vervet dancers, Kelly Turner’s Choreosplat and Katherine Kiefer Stark’s, The Naked Stark. Kalamandir Dance Company from New Jersey will be sharing a Indian contemporary fusion work.
The Indonesian Cultural Club will be performing Cendrawasih, a Balinese dance in the classical style. This performance will provide a nice historical context for Vervet’s Ornamentation, a contemporary dance with aesthetic influence from Balinese dance and the behavior of birds.
Together, Vervet and Friends will share an adventurous, diverse, and pleasing aesthetic experience that includes modern, contemporary, traditional, and world fusion forms as well as improvisation and choreography.
To make all of this possible, we need your help. We’re trying to raise $3,400 to cover the costs of the April 13th show. These funds will help to pay all eight dancer stipends, three musicians, performance space, rehearsal space, staff for the show, promotional costs, make-up, props, costumes, and other performance and reception supplies.
Your contribution to Vervet Dance is a wise investment! The press finds the work of Loren Groenendaal and Vervet Dance to be:
“A curious innovation”
-John Sanford Friedrich, The Carolinian
-Leo Beletsky, Philadelphia Weekly
-Emily Strout, The Oberlin Review
And, pleased audiences are delighted with Vervet, declaring the work:
“very well crafted”
“thoughtful and fine-tuned”
“transforming, transfixing experiences”
We hope you will make a donation either large or small to help us toward our goal, share this page with a friend, and come to the show! If you’re not able to make the show, please consider supporting us in the reception or through this campaign online.

Risks and challenges
There is minimal risk with this project once fully funded. However, it is live performance, so anything can happen. We hope for and work toward the best. We enjoy the thrill of not totally knowing until the present moment as that is what keeps live performance live and alive.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
