About Weird Crime Theater
Weird Crime Theater 130-Page Giant is a near-psychotic fever dream collection of the comic book adventures of Granikos “Granny” Kinkade and Melissa the Conqueror – two low-paid subcontractors working for the government to terminate with extreme prejudice: sasquatches, mummies, paramilitary poets, Amelia Earhart, Inca-cursed blow-up dolls, robots, demon gangsters, stoners, Sploochies (don't ask), fishermen, Glenn Miller, rogue Russian scientists, invisible cats, and decency.
Working (or competing) with Granny and Mel are an assortment of weirdos, fringe dwellers, and urban attention seekers including:
- Lenny, their dispatcher.
- Magic Berkowitz, a man who does not wear enough clothes.
- Two-Fisted Sally, 8-years old, cybernetic arms, candy obsessed.
- Cerebus, one-time barbarian aardvark, now a writer of 007 porn parody novels; specially pencilled, inked, lettered, and ad-libbed by Dave Sim.
- Ninja Pussy, a ninja cat that travels in a baby carriage pushed by a butler.
- Legsy McThigh aka Mistress Kick, a foxy lady with one Lee Haney-sized gam on a quest for revenge.
The book will be 130 pages, black and white, standard comic dimensions, and recommended for mature (hah!) audiences.
It contains: graphic violence, nudity, scenes of “congress” (sometimes with vinyl products), drug use, offensive language, defensive language, offenses to intelligence, references to Ulysses and Jane Seymour, adult themes, juvenile themes, and many more corrupting influences and gags.
Weird Crime Theater emerged out of a desire to create a genuinely different comic -- something that would exploit Mulele's unique sense of visual design while also synthesizing Kurt Schaffenberger Lois Lane comics, Star Trek, Metal, pulp, and gag manga influences into a coherent (?) bumbling detective comic. It would be equal parts pretentious yet lowbrow, transgressive yet oddly nostalgic.

About Our Kickstarter
We first started working on WCT in the summer of 2003, and we have been working on it in bursts on and off ever since. As a result 116 pages are already complete. All scripting is finished, and only 14 pages and covers remain to be illustrated.
There have been several brushes with publication in the past, and it was even incarnated as a webcomic for a few years. However, there have been many stops and starts due to personal, practical, economic and even environmental circumstances (like the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake!).
Thanks to Kickstarter, now, finally, we have the opportunity to make the end run – completing the art and realizing our dream of producing a print edition.
Successful funding will pay for the completion of the artwork and a print run of 500 copies.
Your contributions will be used as follows (approximates):
- Completion of the art and covers: $4500
- Printing and shipping costs: $3500
- Production of additional Rewards: $500
When it starts to look like we are going to meet or exceed our goal, we will start adding stretch goals such as mini-posters/pin-ups, badges, hard cover editions, etc.
Following successful funding, the planned schedule is:
- Feb to May: complete the art.
- June: Pre-press production and printing.
- July: Shipping rewards.

His work includes artwork on FULL THROTTLE stories in DARK HORSE PRESENTS issues 152, 154, and 155, the last of which he also wrote; page layout and lettering on TRIGUN ANIME MANGA vol 1 & 2, HELLSING, HAIBANE RENMEI, SAYUKI RELOAD, and TUROK; writer/artist on Elbis which can be read here (http://www.mulele.com/elbis/?p=4); and writer/artist on The Mindgator which can be read here (http://mulele.com/mindgator/?p=25). All reward tiers of $20 and more will now also receive this set of stickers!
Some of you are looking at the $200 level and wondering, “But, Kumar, what does ‘You as a WCT character imagined by Kumar and Mulele based on a photo’ actually mean?”
Well! Let me give you an example. Let’s say Justin Bieber pledges $200 to the Weird Crime Theater 130-Page Giant Kickstarter campaign and chooses the “Civil Disobedience” tier. At the end of the successful campaign, we get a message from Justin or he responds to a backer survey and he says: “Whuttup, dawgs! LOLZ!!!! I pledged at the Civil Disobedience level. Please find my picture attached. Could you draw me as a totes sick WCT character????? Yo yo laterz, brahz!!!!”
Okay, so then I’d take a look at Justin’s picture and write up a description like this one:
Justin Bieber as SPANKTASTIC! He spanks his enemies with a ping pong paddle, spanking like there's no tomorrow! In order to maximize his spanking effectiveness, he has a wiry cybernetic "helmet" that's plugged into his cerebellum at the back of his neck. He wears the same outfit as Sean Connery in Zardoz.
Then, Mulele would draw it, and it would look like this:
Please note: Mulele was very creeped out at having to draw this so I encourage all of you to get in at the $200 level if you can and get all your friends in there too! Together we can push him over the edge!
Risks and challenges
The script is finished and the art is nearly done, so completion is not a risk.
The main risk is possible delays due to coordinating rewards and mail-outs between Japan and Australia, which may take more time than it might on similar projects. We are allowing two full months between mailing and expected delivery to mitigate this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
