About this project
Who We Are & What We're Going To Do
Since 2006, Carve Industries has been designing, testing, and building wooden boards with the soul surfer in mind. Surfing is an intimate adventure with nature and we believe that a surfer’s equipment should reflect that synergy; by hand building wooden surfboards that will last decades, Carve provides surfers with a responsible and intelligent alternative to the industry-standard board. Traditionally, Carve has built custom boards, paddles, and skateboards one at a time. Seeing the need for non-disposable, “build it like they used to” goods, we are taking part in a global shift already in motion for better products for a smarter tomorrow. But in a world of 17 million surfers, building 30 boards a year, though noble, isn’t going to cut it. We need to take our operation to a level of efficiency that would reach a broader audience with more affordable and sustainable products. In order to do this, we must begin purchasing resources such as our wood and adhesives in bulk and add new tools and machinery for greater efficacy in material use and time. Our long hours, hard work, and personal finances have gotten Carve where it is today, but in order to make the shift to a global market, our growth depends on more than just us; this is where we need your help, Kickstarter.
How It’s Going to Work
We just made the move out of our humble board shack and into a new 2,000 sqft shop, so we've made the first big leap toward increasing our production. But in order to keep the momentum, with your help, we will begin by purchasing additional machinery and ordering our materials in large volumes. By purchasing in bulk, we will reduce shipping costs and transportation footprint as well as have the ability to execute larger production runs. The additional machinery and tools, which would include a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) system, will not only allow components for our boards to be made 80% faster but also reduce wood waste by a third. The automation of component construction will not alter the “hands on” aspect of our boards, so our custom attributes are maintained while improving our quality control and increasing the tolerances of our designs. Ultimately, with your help, these changes will allow Carve Industries to achieve its goal.
I really like what you're doing but can’t afford to donate
No money, no problem. We know times are tough but the cool thing is you don't need cash to contribute. Spread the word, send the link, tweet, facebook, the whole shebang. Maybe there's a surfer or skater in your life who's been waiting for something like this. Put the message out to the universe that there are some cool things happening in this crazy world that might just make a difference. To exist one must be known. Don't wait, don't come back to this later. Do this now. We only have 30 days to make this happen and we all know how quickly that time can pass by.
I'm Not a Surfer...Should I Still Be Interested?
Absolutely. Carve Industries may specialize in surfboards but we are driven by our overarching love of wood and the desire to alter what products consumers purchase. We host galas showcasing the works of local, hard-goods craftsmen; work on side projects built from collected reclaimed lumber; and host our own wood working classes on paddle building and surf/skate board construction. More than a surfboard company, Carve represents the shift toward intelligent consumption.
If I'm Feeling Generous, Can I Make a Donation Without a Reward?
If you're really interested in donating, but don't care for any of our rewards, we are 100% okay with you choosing just to donate. We will gladly accept your donations and provide you with an option to opt out of your reward in our post-success pledge survey. And who knows, you might just get an awesome video from the Carve Crew personally thanking you for your philanthropic deeds...
NOTICE TO BACKERS: All orders at and above the $550 level have shipping included in the price. If local delivery (within 50 miles of Lyons, CO we will personally hand deliver your board or paddle) or local pickup is an option, the shipping fee will be waived. Additionally, all orders at and above the $550 level to be shipped to destinations outside the continental US will incur additional shipping costs. These costs are to be determined based upon destination and reward item. We apologize that we can not have this information up front, but due to the bulk size of our paddles and boards, individualized freight quotes must be obtained. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

$250 - Planting Trees for the Good of Tomorrow - LIMITED TO 5 BACKERS
We have teamed up with a private company that allows us to use a percentage of our business' revenue to help redevelop deforested areas as well as create sustainable and productive worldwide communities. They don't just throw seeds around and hope for the best, this organization teaches and empowers rural groups to grow sustainable, renewable forests for agriculture and food, firewood, construction, water collection and filtration and animal habitat. Through education, outreach, and positive guidance, your $250 will help to plant 2500 trees as well as provide a better future for a community in a developing country. And what better way to complete the renewable cycle of wooden board building than by planting more trees than we use!! NOTE: We can not yet explicitly name this company because they have strict standards which require us to reach a point of good standing by way of a thorough application process and donation requirements. This is their way of protecting themselves from the "green-washers" in the world, a policy for which we have enormous respect. When we reach our point of good standing, which should be soon, we will notify you officially of our cooperation with this organization.

We have a lot of really exciting new designs on hold including wake and river surfers. If we can reach our stretch goal of $50,000 we will have the budget to run full research and development and production on these additional products. Super stretch goal? We would love to hit $100,000...the progress we would make with our product line would be nearly unimaginable: multiple generations of prototypes of our glassless board; outsourcing of our milling to local mills with dedicated, high-tolerance tools; more robust and dedicate marketing and public relations programs; better outreach in spreading the word on sustainable and intelligent surfing consumerism.
Risks and challenges
Getting It Done Yesterday
Like any company, things need happen at the opportune moment: yesterday. In life, it never seems like there’s enough time to keep up and make all the dreaming and brainstorming a reality, and for Carve its not much different. The upcoming winter months are dedicated to constructing and building surplus for the summer months. Therefore the time is now for bulk material orders and new machinery.
Fulfilling Pledge Rewards
Sufficient time will be required to process orders for Pledge Rewards. We have no false illusions of the time and effort needed to ship t-shirts, hats, growlers, and surfboards. One-on-one conversations will need to take place for each board order to ensure we have met our supporters’ needs in getting them the board of their dreams. Our team is prepared with shipping cost, labor and time factored out on spreadsheets and smart phones. Plus, if there’s one thing the Carve team has learned over the last year, it’s that we’re really good at putting in long hours.
Rewiring the Consumer Mindset
One of our greatest risks is that we are ahead of our time and that society is not ready to embrace a non-disposable product. It's a risk that our products are "too expensive" and consumers fail to recognize the value in a product that is built to last. We live in a time that has popularized the consumer mindset of "as fast and as cheap as possible." It is a risk, however, that we are committed to overcoming.
Our product is not one that people come across online and purchase without digging deeper. We have to educate our current and potential customers about why we use wood, the longevity of our products, why they cost more and the environmental benefits to wood boards.
