Update! We've reached our goal, so I've set some stretch goals:
- At $4,750, the books will have nice printed inside covers. (Yay! We made it!)
- At $6,000, everyone who's getting a physical book will get a free print. Everyone who's getting the digital edition only will get a digital version of the print suitable for phone wallpaper.
What Is This?
This is the first collected volume of Muddlers Beat comics. Muddlers Beat is a continuation of the popular web comic Finn and Charlie Are Hitched, and it's an LGBTQ-focused, antic comedy slice-of-life comic strip about a group of friends just muddling through life, like we all do. They deal with small questions like, do I like my job, what am I doing at a sperm bank, and how do I meet guys? All in the service of the big questions, like who am I, and what kind of person do I want to be? Literally Everything Is Outside My Comfort Zone will be a full-color, 60-page, offset-printed, perfect-bound trade paperback. It's going to look real swank. You'll like it.
What's It About?
Finn and Charlie are a married couple in their 40's, dealing with things like sperm banks and dying pets. Their friend Ken is a hipster in his 20's who is just starting to discover himself sexually and his boyfriend Corey isn't sure how he feels about that. Candy is in her late 40's, with a successful career she's ambivalent about. Krys has just moved away from her small town and is on a quest to figure out who she wants to be. And it's all funny. Did I mention it's funny?
What People Are Saying
Here are some choice words about my previous comic, Finn and Charlie Are Hitched, which featured the same cast.
"…a breath of fresh air in the heteronormative world of slice-of-life comics" —T.J. Grabowy writing for Queerty
"Humor isn't hard to find in comics, and keen observations of life and relationships are common enough in art, but rarely are these two qualities combined as enjoyably as they are in Hitched." — Jeffrey Brown, author of Clumsy and Darth Vader and Son
“Tony Breed has managed to take the best elements of the classic family comic strips and re-imagine them as a modern, gay webcomic. The result is a smart, quirky, and hilarious look at both the absurdity and mundanity of a modern family; Finn and Charlie Are Hitched is not to be missed!” —Justin Hall, No Straight Lines and Glamazonia, the Uncanny Super-Tranny!
“Hitched is warm and wonderful in every way—from Finn and Charlie themselves, to the humor and the incandescent art.” —Gordon McAlpin, Multiplex
The background music in my video is "Pickpocket", by Mutts, who kindly gave me permission to use the song. You can buy it on iTunes, among other places.
Risks and challenges
The comics are all written, and I have done this kind of project before, so I know what I'm doing. The risks are very low—the only real variable is my time, and the only real risk is that the book could be released late. On the other hand, I'm partnering with Make That Thing (makethatthing.com) for fulfillment, so it will be faster than last time… no more trudging to the post office with a stack of packages!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
