About this project
A filmmaker, wolf ecologist, storyteller, conservation adventurer, and Young National Geographic Explorer head out to retrace the tracks of a lone wolf . . . to promote coexistence with wolves and wildlife.
Our documentary film and wolf expedition will follow the approximate GPS track created by a young male wolf who traversed over 1,200 miles through Oregon and into California. He became the first and only free-roaming wolf in the state of California in nearly 90 years.
National and international media reported his remarkable journey and gave him a place in our history books. He is still out there . . . and known as Wolf OR-7.
Help us fund the documentary of our expedition and ensure the remarkable story of Wolf OR-7 reaches a wide audience and raises awareness of the challenges faced by wolves returning to their historic rangelands.
We are a team of outdoor adventurers, sponsored by Sculpt the Future Foundation and Xplore and collaborating through the Wild Peace Alliance, undertaking this epic walk and mountain bike journey to create educational materials for all of us to better understand wolves.
Starting in May 2014, we will cross snow-capped mountains in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, on the lookout for wolf tracks in OR-7's original home range. Afterwards, we will cross a high desert plateau and miles of backcountry tracks to arrive at Crater Lake National Park.
The Cascade Mountains will lead us into California as we pass Klamath Falls, then arc south into Lava Lakes National Park and deep into Lassen County. We then turn north and pass Mount Shasta, heading to where Wolf OR-7 meandered in the region of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.
As seen on:
We are not alone on this adventure and our team has support and endorsement from many leading individuals and organizations, such as the Pacific Wolf Coalition - an alliance of over 30 organizations working towards a common vision where wolves once again play a positive, meaningful, and sustainable role on the landscape and in our culture.
WHY ARE WE FOLLOWING WOLF OR-7'S ROUTE?
Conservation adventure expeditions have the unique ability to address education, research and awareness actions in simple, accessible and inspiring ways. Beyond all the work, this expedition is about feeding the spirit of adventure and celebrating wilderness.
Education. The educational map, multimedia stories and interviews, E-book, and follower-submitted questions will provide many fun and educational insights during and after the expedition, all of which use Wolf OR-7s journey as the main story.
Research. We will use our experience as ecologists and wildlife trackers to conduct a rough biological survey of wildlife and wildlife habitat along Wolf OR-7’s travel route as we go. Using CyberTracker Conservation software, we will create a multimedia digital map of the wildlife, tracks, and signs encountered throughout the entire expedition.
Awareness. Our documentary film, time-lapse of the expedition route, and public storytelling presentations will spread the story of a real wolf in modern wolf country to dispel myths and encourage further understanding of wolves.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
Our expedition team members are all volunteers. Many people have been excited about this project and asked us how they may support and get involved — we see Kickstarter as an answer. By supporting us here, you get to engage with the expedition as it unfolds and participate in making a difference for wolves facing uncertainty in returning to their historic rangelands.
We invite you to support us and to get involved. Donate. Ask questions. Share stories. And remember to get out and explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
From Kickstarter: “Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
Backing a project is more than just giving someone money, it's supporting their dream to create something that they want to see exist in the world."

Risks and challenges
The Wolf OR-7 Expedition is an epic expedition, even for seasoned adventurers. We’ve been working tirelessly for more than a year to bring together the right team, planning and the energy to make this adventure a success.
Documenting an expedition is tough work, where the weather, the route, the time constraints and the dangers of terrain can all change the game.
We have faith, if a lone wolf could journey 1,200 miles from Oregon, through high desert, along the edge of the Cascade range and down into California, sidestepping obstacles and roads, slipping past towns and byways, then so can we. We may face unexpected challenges, but we have planned every detail and assembled an experienced team. The support and endorsement we have from conservation groups, sponsors and experts goes a long way.
In the end we are doing this for wolves and wolf coexistence in the Pacific Northwest, and the one risk we might take is not doing it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have no intention of broadcasting his positing or whereabouts beyond what has already been put into the public domain by conservation authorities. We are not trying to find him, instead our aim is to share stories of the challenges faced by wolves returning to their historic rangelands and to celebrate the communities along his route that have shown tolerance and understanding for wolves.
