When I was in middle school a friend of mine had this cool puzzle box thing that some old lady in the neighborhood had given him for mowing her lawn. I thought it was awesome. I borrowed it & bought some blocks & made my own copy of it. In high school I gave it to a girl as a sign of my affection & I have no idea what ended up happening to either the box or the girl.
A few years ago I remembered the puzzle box for some reason & I searched for one, but I didn't know what it was called to try to find it. So I bought some blocks & was surprised I was able to figure out what the seven pieces looked like from memory. I made a few with my niece for Christmas this past year for her to give out & a friend of my brother's that she gave one to said, "Oh, wow, cool, a Soma Box!" & I looked it up & that is what they're called. Designed in 1933 by Piet Hein.
So anyway, I enjoy making them & they're fun to play with. & I want to get a lot more blocks so I can fool around with the idea of coming up with some other puzzle designs. Depending on how funding goes, I may even be able to go ahead & invest in some blocks & have those designed before the project ends & offer those as rewards as well (don't worry, Kickstarter is super cool about changing your reward selection). The ones in the video are the 1.5 inch ones & the 3 inch ones would be twice the size. Here's a couple animated gifs for you.
