THE DIRECTOR AND THE MAKING OF VIVA VIVA
Hello! This movie is practically done! My name is Carolina Pfister and I shot, produced, directed, and edited this piece. Viva Viva is a journey that is almost ten years in the making and that started with the filming between 2003 and 2005 in São Paulo, Brazil. Then 6 years passed while I took a professional detour in the non-profit world, and became a mother of twins! I began editing the movie in 2011 and one year later this phase is nearly complete. With your help I can finish post-production by July of 2012. It will then be submitted to festivals.
Viva Viva tells a story that is very dear to me, and I feel honored to have made the pieces come together to give life to this intimate and explosive urban tale of a truly independent culture. This is the beginning of a long cinematic journey in my life!
Who am I? I was born in Switzerland and grew up mostly in Brazil. I worked as an art director for Mtv Brazil, and with outreach at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo. I later obtained my MFA in experimental film in the USA, and received a Women in Film “Emerging Latina Filmmaker” award. Please see my profile for more information.
In a country well known for samba and bossa nova, where corruption is cultural and violence is routine, punk brought a cathartic expression more akin to urban realities. As a movement that started working class under the violent grip of Brazilian dictatorship, this is D.I.Y.* at its most creative, and a celebratory means of resistance. Viva Viva is also a portrait of São Paulo, the fierce birthplace of Brazilian punk. Experience the lives and surroundings of a few punks, from the shanty-towns to the city center, their tales interwoven with urban chaos and a universal desire to live a meaningful life.
*D.I.Y. / DIY as a subculture began with punk in the 70’s. First as a means to organize their own shows, record their own albums, as well as book and promote their own tours. Later referring to self-sufficiency through the completion of tasks oneself, despite societal obstacles, be it in music or art, activism or literature, and growing and cooking your own food, to name a few examples. At the very core of Punk ideology, the DIY ethic is an anti-consumerist and empowering response to these increasingly fragmented and despondent times.
WHAT THE FUNDS ARE INTENDED FOR
Viva Viva is almost ready to leave the editing room for the final stages of post-production which are: color correction, sound mixing, translation and subtitling! In order to hit deadlines for important festivals I must finish the film by late July, an attainable goal. I am fundraising for half of the cost to fully complete the film. The other half I will self-fund. If you pledge, my heartfelt thank you, as every dollar helps me get closer to my goal!
The funds raised here will be used for the following 3 expenses:
1 ) A qualified translator to interpret the urban lingo, and artfully distill the essence of what is being said. Cost: $2000
2) A professional sub-titling service so the timing of the sub-titles is perfect. Cost: $1800
3) I have also figured in the cost for master tapes, copies of the film to submit to festivals, postcard / sticker design and print, website expansion, 5% for Kickstarter, and 3 to 5% for Amazon's payment processing service.
If I were to be so lucky that I exceed my goal the funds will go towards professional color correction and sound mixing, which are the final important steps in the finishing process. That would be a dream! Anything above that would go towards starting the DVD process with the wonderful booklet I’d love to add….
Any questions at all please contact me at email@example.com
Can I increase my pledge once it's been made?
Yes, you can increase your pledge amount. Just sign in to Kickstarter and go to our project page. Find the “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount.
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
If my goal isn’t met by the deadline, no money changes hands. Your pledge will only be counted if my movie gets fully funded. That is the way Kickstarter works.
Can you exceed the goal?
Yes, I can keep raising money until the deadline. Wow.
