Post Mount Disc Tab Fixture

This Kickstarter project aims to produce a Post Mount disc tab mounting fixture. This tool is for bicycle framebuilders. It is simple to use. The fixture provides the strength and rigidity you need to hold the tab in place during welding or brazing. At the same time, the form factor is minimal, so the fixture does not obstruct the welding or brazing torch. The compact mounting block is very stiff and does not flex or twist during brazing or welding. It is secured using precision ground shoulder bolts to ensure proper positioning. The main body of the fixture is also very rigid. The clamp uses an M6 thread, which can be tightened securely. The clamp bore can accommodate various dummy axles and still maintain precision and accuracy.    

This Post Mount Jig requires a 3/4"(0.750" or 19.05mm) precision dummy axle.

This fixture attaches Post Mount tabs to any frame or fork. Positions for 140mm and160mm rotors are included. A simple and inexpensive adapter for 180mm and 203mm rotors will be offered separately. The clamp attachment system allows framebuilders to use a variety of dummy axles, including those made by Incepi, Anvil, Alex Meade, and others. 

The fixture is for attaching bicycle industry Post Mount standard tabs. This is the standard found on many bicycle frames and forks. It allows you to run Post Mount disc brake calipers. You can also attach ISO tabs with this fixture, using the appropriate adapter.

The two pairs of mounting holes are 74.2mm apart, and in the correct position relative to the axle as per bicycle industry standards. With the fixture in FRONT mode(with included spacer), a disc tab can be attached to a fork. With the fixture in REAR mode(with included spacer), a disc tab can be attached to a frame. Any standard Post Mount tab may be used, and may be purchased from other suppliers or made by the framebuilder.

Useful for mechanics and shops

The fixture is also useful for bicycle mechanics and others in the bicycle industry. It can be used to verify whether disc tabs already attached to frames or forks are misaligned or improperly positioned.

Simple to use

The installation process is exactly the same for the fork and the frame. 

Secure the dummy axle into the dropout, with fixture attached. Install the tab into the fixture. Rotate the fixture until the tab is in the desired location. Decide on the cut line for the tab that will best match the profile of the frame or fork. If you want to experiment before cutting the metal tab, you can trace it onto cardboard and modify the cardboard cutout first. Once you are satisfied with the fit, you can cut the metal tab using the profile of the cardboard mock up. 

Trace the contour of the frame or fork onto the tab. Remove the tab and machine, cut and file as required. Reinstall the modified tab onto the fixture. Weld or braze the tab onto the frame or fork.

Detailed instructions will be provided with every fixture.

Risks and challenges

There is very little risk involved with the manufacturing of these parts.They are made with conventional machining processes. Well established local machine shops have already quoted the parts. I have worked with these shops successfully on other projects. These are local shops that have successfully delivered in the past. On time and on budget.

This is the same fixture which will be provided to project supporters. No further revisions or enhancements are required.

The only real risks involved are manufacturing delays due to machine shop scheduling conflicts or errors. Supporters will be updated about delays in a timely manner. I have provided access to the project details to somebody familiar with the project in the event that some unfortunate event should prevent me from completing the project personally. The original Incepi ISO fixtures were delivered as promised to Kickstarter backers. Incepi Flat Mount fixtures were also delivered on time and on budget. The Incepi Post Mount fixtures will be delivered as promised.
