About this project
ThreeGates Studios was formed to focus on developing great games for core gamers.
Over the last few years the trend in the gaming industry has been to remove complexity and intricacies from their products. In short, a lot of triple decker banana splits with all the trimmings have turned into bland vanilla syntheto-mush.
We realize game companies do this because they want their products to be accessible to the broadest mainstream audience possible. This however has come at a cost. We've seen many disappointed gamers as we watch beloved titles get watered down or console-adapted to the point where the gaming experience is no longer appealing to the original fans.
We believe that the core Gaming audience is really hungry for a game that can deliver a deep experience, interesting choices, and more control over how you look as an individual, as well as how you play the game. We're committed to delivering quality games that include these elements.
This video shows one of the many, Legends of Aethereus Field Tests, that we do to ensure we can deliver the absolute best product for our supporters. It is an example of how our team is willing to give the extra effort it takes to make a great game.
By popular demand another Realistic Field Test Video. The Tuskboar Impact Simulation

We chose working with the Unity3D game engine as we see it as the engine of the future. They are constantly adding features and the large and open community allows for meaningful knowledge exchange. We are confident that Unity3D is the correct long-term platform due to its incredible growth curve, living community and active technical support. Our experience has been very positive and we encourage new developers to choose Unity3D.”
We will offer a DRM Free version with single player, LAN, and direct ip connect. So you'll be able to play and enjoy Legends of Aethereus in a stand alone version free from DRM.
We will support Linux! In our opinion the Linux Community has been somewhat forgotten by game developers despite its growing popularity. We also believe that Linux users will enjoy the game play style in Legends of Aethereus. Since our aim is to make a product for core gamers we felt it is very important to cater to the Linux Community since such a high percent have the same philosophy as ThreeGates. Nothing could make us happier than to provide a great game for the Linux Community.
We definitely don't want to forget about all our good friends and supporters that prefer Mac so we are also offering a Mac Version of the game. We are happy that we have had such a positive response from Apple users and we are glad to provide a version just for Mac.
Over twenty people have dedicated over a year of their lives to this project. By that we mean working without salary full-time on our own savings. Why? Because we all have a core belief that this type of game should be made and will be well received. We recently held a closed beta and we are in the process of putting the final polish on the game.
Now we are at the doorstep of releasing the game and we want to do so in a fashion that will provide great content and quality for core gamers. To do this we are asking for some support to give us that nudge we need to deliver a quality product meeting the needs of our core target group. As an independent developer we want to interact directly with the end users and make sure we're on track.
In short we need some help so we can survive the last months to get this project over the finish line.
So if you’re a core gamer out there that is looking for a rich gaming experience full of interesting strategic options and individual customization possibilities then we think Legends of Aethereus might be for you. Thank you for spending your valuable time looking at our project, and thank you Kickstarter for being there.
ThreeGates Studios is a group of industry veterans with a wide background. We are located on the Swedish Island of Gotland in the World Heritage City of Visby.
Our studio is located within the medieval city walls inside of an old tavern that was built in the 13th century…Vikings and Teutonic Knights used to drink here and prepare for battle!
We thought this would be an inspirational location to make an Action RPG game.
ThreeGates was formed in 2010 by a group of people who all have years of experience in the game industry. We’ve all worked in the games field; as game designers, graphic artists, programmers, event producers, sound designers, marketers and educators. Now we’ve teamed up with a common goal: to make great games. Our strengths are our tight-knit team, our ability to move fast, our willingness to work hard and strive for excellence.
Chief Executive Officer [CEO]
Don Geyer's background includes work as a Regional Operations Manager, Marketing Consultant, Game Producer, University Researcher, Program Director as well as project leader for a number of thriving projects, Don has vast experience working with and leading teams. He’s been involved in several projects in entrepreneurship for female game design-students, was Game Producer for the Simulation Sweden Project, and created and founded the Gotland Game Awards event, bringing students and game industry together. All these works lead to an untouchable knowledge of the games field, and experience money just can’t buy
Chief Marketing Officer [CMO]
Sean Kauppinen is the Chief Marketing Officer for ThreeGates, and an invaluable asset to the team. He is the founder and CEO of the International Digital Entertainment Agency (IDEA) and has more than 17 years of experience in management, business development and marketing in the games and digital entertainment industry. He has worked on more than 550 titles and consulted companies on their corporate, market and product positioning, business development marketing and public relations. He has also been a university teacher in 2D-art, graphic design and concept art since 2008
Chief Operation Officer [COO]
Håkan Mattsson's main role in his previous game projects has been that of lead programmer and producer, but his skills are many and diversified indeed; he’s been a teacher in event production and quality assurance for games, worked on the Gotland Game Awards as an event team-member, technical manager and webmaster, started his own game company (Databox Games) and set up an XNA-lab for Microsoft.
LoA can be played in single player or multiplayer mode. The game supports four player co-op and a variety of PvP game types. There is a single player campaign and we have put a lot of time into creating a fun new universe. More details on this are coming.
The money will go to supporting the team and basic development expenses in this final phase. The team has been self-funding for over a year and we are asking for some support to help us get over the finish line.
LoA is a high action, low fantasy RPG with four player co-op and a variety of PvP game types.
In LoA you enter the game as a newly recruited agent in the nexus city-state Guard.
Alana – Captain of the City-Guard is your mentor and contact for the main quest line.
We have already performed a closed beta and are in the polishing state. We need to cross some T’s and dot some I’s and then we will be able to deliver a quality game for core PC, Mac and Linux gamers.
We believe that the core gaming audience is starved for games that still deliver a rich gaming experience that includes depth, interesting choices and control. We are committed to deliver quality games that include these elements. Legends of Aethereus is the first game in this vein and with your support, it will be the start of something great for all of us core gamers.
If you want to support a rag-tag group of Independent game developers that are trying to make high quality product that competes with the big boys. In short to help out the underdog!
A digital copy of the soundtrack and digital set of Legends of Aethereus Wallpapers will be included in the $25 Buddy Pack. Sorry for the typo in the text. The graphic version is correct.
The answer is yes! We are using the Unity3D Engine and we plan on supporting all the platforms they support. We have had a Mac version of the game working in the Alpha phase and we plan on releasing and supporting a Mac version of the full game shortly after the PC release.
YES! We are using the Unity3D Engine and we plan on supporting all the platforms they support. They recently added Linux support and we will deliver a Linux version of the game. Here's a link to the press release announcing it: http://game-newswire.com/index.php/the-news/636
Our plan is to hopefully release on Origin, Steam and other digital platforms. We'll also have a DRM-free version, because we know a lot of people hate DRM.
Thank you for your support. Hitting the funding goal is everything to us right now. After more than a year working on the game full time (23 people), we are so close. We would love any help you can give in Tweeting the project to friends, sharing it on Facebook, your blog, even the forums of sites you like. Pinterest, Google+, heck, even MySpace if you are there. If you know a writer, podcaster, editor, anyone, please tell them. The more people that we can show the project to, the better. Again, we really appreciate your help.
That's our COO, and he is doing fine. He is actually even more creative after the fall. We can only hope more field tests will result in more backers and we can stop using him as a test subject.
