It's Time! Legends of Aethereus

Hello LoA Backers!

We are happy to announce that we will shortly begin the distribution process of the final version of Legends of Aethereus!

We will do this through an automated system that sends you all the information you will need to get your version of LoA up and running. The information will be sent to your Kickstarter email. The automated system sends out a few at a time but everybody should receive their information within the next 24 hours.

Once you receive your information there is an online check for the activation keys but once you have successfully activated the game you will be able to play LoA in SP or MP LAN offline and DRM free.

LoA is available for: Linux, Windows and Mac and the versions are completely compatible. So feel free to team-up across OS platforms.

We have been hard at work incorporating the special Kickstarter features within LoA and we are planning a patch that should add the last of those features by Thursday July 25th. We are looking forward to your feedback so we can keep adapting and improving the features so that they deliver a great gaming experience.

We will also be sending out more details about tier rewards and individual information through the Kickstarter communication system.

We really appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the game!

Just like to confirm, for those interested, that this game can be installed and played offline (ran it on a PC with no network connection). The only oddity was that the game still attempted localhost access and blocking this would stop it from working (your character would spin nonstop making it hard to do anything).
Not tried the game much but have two minor bugs to report - setting sound to surround (5.1, etc) results in loss of sound for the intro (presumably it has stereo soundtracks only) and some of the NPCs on the starting quay can be walked through.

    2. ThomasN on July 26, 2013

OK. I can confirm you can do in a LAN:
      - Install full game (LOAInstall1.61.803.3989.exe, 1GB)
      - Activate with 25-letter serial we got sent via mail.
      - Set up coop listen server with checkbox "LAN" (didn't test if people could join). There was also an option for "join per IP".
      - Start single player campaign.
This is exactly what was promised ("We will offer a DRM Free version with single player, LAN, and direct ip connect.").
      Thank you, Three Gates!
So far, I'm particularly impressed by the make up options :-)

Got my key, activated my game and now i'm playing. The game is running really fine, much more smoother than before (when i played the beta). You really did a good job optmizing this launch version. No bugs here too, until now. I'm liking the game, it's funs, a bit hard to learn but fun. I still have to try the coop mode.

"Then you can activate your Game off-line. Then you can play single player and LAN completely off-line."
"You can download the game (never go online) and simply activate it off-line using your activation code."
I don't understand the "activate it offline" part, seems like it's still requires Internet. Let me rephrase my question: I pledged for "Expedition Pack Level" and have 4 keys here already. Three additional people will go to my next LAN. These have not installed the game so far. Can I or can I not install and run the game on these three additional machines on my next LAN? Please answer with yes or no.

Sorry some you are having problems. Can you please send us your crash logs and we will try and remedy any problems you are having with the opening scene or any other issues. We are working on a small patch to remedy the issues that have come up and a few mistakes we made in the build set-up. We apologize for any problems and hope to fix these issues very soon.

The game works well right now for me just really sucked that I had all these issues when the game started up. At least it is not just myself having issues with the game.

Guys, didn't received my e-mail yet. Am i missing something?

Game works well for me! Thanks! I am having fun!

    9. Steven Picard on July 24, 2013

The game crashes almost constantly on me, as well. I have gotten lucky and got past the opening scenes a couple times and got to the game itself. Once the game is running it runs well, though.

    10. David C. Simon on July 24, 2013

Can't even get past the opening movie - the game crashes every time :/

Also for Linux users were does the game store user information. The reason I am asking because if it stores the user information in the game directory. Then when you upgrade your game it sounds like you will lose your players.

Sean you brought up about the DRM issue and ok fine but what about the fact the issue I have found in the game in the first 15 mins. When you put the game as RC4 that tells me that the game is not even finished yet.

    13. Avarchillion on July 24, 2013

yay, I helped in the beta process and hope that this time the game is really finished. ;-)

      More DRM Clarification:
As we mentioned before if you do not want to ever play the game online with the key check you do not. You can download the game (never go online) and simply activate it off-line using your activation code. If you would like to update you can download the latest version of the game and your original activation code will work for the new updated version. This can all be done off-line without ever "checking your activation code or for current patches". Furthermore, you will be able to keep all your characters from previous versions of the game in the new updated versions.
      Hope that clarifies it more

We'll it gets better I found a lady in the city that she is by her self and I can not even talk to her even it says press E to talk to her. It gets better when I get close to her on the highest setting my skin starts to change different colours. Really guys come on here this game really needs another 3 - 6 months of testing and fixes at LEAST. It feels like you guys just pushed it out and did not even bother. Also I wanted a DRM Free version so how do I upgrade my game with out losing my character.

Hi there this is my first time to play the game and 10 mins into the game I am really upset about this game if this is "IT". The game controls do not work AT ALL when you move the mouse pointer breaks and you can see your desktop mouse and game mouse at the same time. I went next to the water and the water was breaking into yellow. This is what I could find in the fist 5 mins. Even better yet when you down load the game it game says RC4 release candidate 4 come on guys. If you needed more time for this game I would have would have been for some more time.

Err, "online activation" is DRM, even if it's once off.

Paul Bowtle on July 23, 2013

So if i have this correct we get the game as you have released it today if we want a "DRM FREE" copy as promised. If we want any updates to fix any bugs or add features we need to have a DRM ENCUMBERED game. So when in the future we have a new computer and we want to play this game and sadly the servers that authenticate the DRM and have the updates are no longer running (for whatever reason) we can only play the game as it is released today.

I only mention this as i still play many games that i purchased over the last 25 or so years. Had they had an online check i would not be able to play most as the companies no longer exist and some that still do do not support these games as they do not make enough money to keep servers running indefinitely. Fo this reason i have many original games complete with all patches backed up so i can install and play them at will.

    19. Niggles on July 23, 2013

I think your going to get a lot of feedback devs.DRM free means download install activation, no serial.GOG will refuse to sell this game if you attempt to try to sell through them while this activation exists on this game. A key to use multiplayer online is ok

    20. Daryl Putman on July 23, 2013

So if your office is empty/servers stop responding even to email we can't access our game in the future? That's DRM.

    21. Sean Kauppinen Creator on July 23, 2013

      DRM Clarification:

Ok I just want to explain further. You can acquire your activation key through email. Then you can activate your Game off-line. Then you can play single player and LAN completely off-line. So you can play single player and LAN without every going online with the game.

If you start LoA in online mode then it will check the key and the patch system will check the version and updates will be offered if available.

I hope that explains it better – Cheers Don

"Once you receive your information there is an online check for the activation keys but once you have successfully activated the game you will be able to play LoA in SP or MP LAN offline and DRM free."

This sentence is self-contradictory. Activation is DRM, therefore it is not DRM free if it requires activation. Hopefully this gets straightened out soon. I refuse to have a DRMed product.

    23. ThomasN on July 23, 2013

Wwwwwhat? So I have 4 keys. I can not install the software on a LAN (=nobody has internet) to client PC's (each entering a different key)?

    24. Jalister on July 23, 2013

I missed the activation part, that does sound like DRM, which goes against the FAQ. If by activation you mean you need to get an installation key that can be used to install the game offline, then I am ok with. I have no problems against installation keys. I do however have a problem with online activation, even if it's just for installation. DRM is DRM.

Will we new to uninstall the beta for this to run or will it update?

    26. Malachite on July 23, 2013

Forgive me if you've already answered this elsewhere, but are you going to be on Steam? I hate DRM when it's done poorly, but it's very convenient to have all my games on Steam!

Like Paul Bowtle said, it's a little weird, to say the least, to hear "DRM Free" and "online check" on the same sentence.
An "online check" is a form of DRM...

    28. Missing avatar

Paul Bowtle on July 23, 2013

I take it by "DRM FREE" you mean that a subsequent install will not need the internet to verify that the digital rights management has not be compromised and we do have the right to use it without digital checks for playing offline? I am finding it a little hard to reconcile "DRM FREE" with an activation check.

    29. Jalister on July 23, 2013

Great news! I will definitely try cross platform play with Windows and Linux.
