Update #6

Q&A - Answers to Backer Questions about LoA Game Play

Hello All LoA Backers!

Thank you for all the great questions. Steven L and many others have messaged or posted questions in the comments area about the game play. We have tried to answer those questions quickly in text here and are working on some videos that will explain things in a bit more depth.

I have copy pasted the Q&A here in the body of this update:

Once again thank you for all the support and engagement. We are very excited and happy to engage with the community as much as possible...

KICKSTARTER Backer Q & A

1. Is there an inventory system?

Yes, we have an inventory system that has four main areas: gear and weapons, materials, gems, and items. We have drag and drop and click/button combinations to equip, sell, and move things around. We will have a more in-depth explanation video of this shortly.

2. Is there a storage system?

Yes, each player has a “player apartment” within their Nexus-City State home base. The player apartment is where you can customize your city, see your achievements and store you extra items. There is a large chest within the apartment that serves as your main storage.

3. Are there physical crafting materials? If so, how do you gather them?

Yes, we the crafting system has physical materials. The crafting system breaks each item up into sections. Each of these sections has several templates to choose from. For example a sword has three sections: the handle, guard and blade.

Each of these sections has several different templates with varied characteristics. The most obvious is some are much bigger, which makes them heavier and cost more material.

So a larger heavier blade may do more damage and cause more knock back force but make the weapon slower. So after you choose a template you then choose the material you want to use for that section of your weapon or gear.

Materials are the main drop from enemies and monsters. So you can accumulate materials from grinding in quest levels or simply buy or trade for them at shops.

4. Is there any type of trade system in place for selling or giving crafted items to your Co-Op friends?

Yes there is a simple trade system that allows you to trade with other players. Both players place the items in the trade slot they want to and hit ok to both agree and the items are exchanged. We are also working on a fast “give” feature that will allow you to give something to another player in a quicker manner for use in combat and more intense situations that require speed.

5. Do enemies drop items/loot?

Yes enemies drop loot. The looting system has a lot a variety depending on the quest type and context of the situation. In general we will be dropping more materials to be used in crafting than items.

We have also added customizable quests so if you are in need of say, platinum to make an awesome helmet, you can request a quest that will focus on acquiring platinum.

We wanted to make the loot system work so that you are focused on things you want and need. We want to avoid the situation of constantly having to go back to town to trade in five thousand useless orc bows because your inventory is full.

6. Do enemies respawn?

No, we do not have enemies come back life through respawning in LoA.

7. Are there any gear sets? If so, are there bonuses attached to collecting a full gear set?
There are gear sets and the possibility of full sets having bonuses is there. However we put more emphasis on players creating their own gear. So we have focused on building a system that allows for players themselves to find the sweet combinations and produce them.

8. How many slots of gear to equip on your character?

Character slots: Helmet, Main Armor, Necklace, 2 rings, gloves, boots and then right and left hand equipped. We do have the ability to alter these either before release or even in a patch after if the need arose for changes.

The system incorporates a quick change between two hand equipped kits. So by hitting “Q” you can quick change from say: Sword (right hand) and Shield (left hand) to a two handed range weapon like a musket (right hand and left) or any other kit you have equipped in the secondary kit set-up.

9. Can you continue playing the same game after the main quest has been finished?

Yes you can continue playing.

First off you can do this by going to one of the quest givers using the customizable procedural quest generator system. So you can play these generated quests in theory forever.

You also have the opportunity of playing several game types within the arena.

Lastly and most important is that we intend to provide plenty of new content so that there will be plenty of new quest lines that extend the story and allow players to explore new story trees.

10. Can you let us know more about the Nexus-CityState?

The Nexus City-State is your base of operations.

So you will be acquiring all your quests here and develop your character into an important influence within the city.

The Nexus is one of the last bastions of hope on Aethereus and your job is to keep it that way.

So as an agent for the Nexus you will be reporting directly to Alana whose main duty is protection of the city.

There is also an antagonist influence within the Nexus.

The Venata have an embassy in the Nexus and their main goal is to overthrow the current government and take control of the Nexus and all the lands of Aethereus.

The Ghalian Shaman are also looking to take control of the Nexus and use their minions the Khagal to do their evil biddings.

Everybody within the world of Aethereus has recently become aware of the power of ancient technologies and knowledge that have suddenly begun to resurface. All our convinced that finding these secrets first is the only way to maintain control over Aethereus.

So searching for the Seven Ancient Relics that hold the key to this knowledge is the driving force behind the main questline and the main preoccupation of the entire power struggle within the Nexus City-State.

11. You mentioned that there is a statue creator and customizable banners. You also elude to further customization within Nexus-CityState, care to elaborate on what that may be?

We have been working on a few options. Some of these are more passive in nature. As an example depending on what quests you have completed or have open their will be a different configuration of NPCs inhabiting the Nexus. So if you are in the middle of the quest line where you in a heated battle with the Venata you might notice more Venanta soldiers within the city.

Other options are more player controlled and include being able to customize the NPC characters or clothing, changing the weather types and adding small objects or areas.

12. Traps- How many can be placed at a time and is there a timer in place for them to disappear eventually?

The traps, set-up guns and other deployable items such as punji sticks or iron barrier all have their own characteristics.

For example the set-up turrets shoot until they have expanded their ammo supply then the crumble apart and slowly disappear.

Most of the deployables have a variable for damage and when they have reached that point they break apart and disappear.

So to try and answer your question the best way possible is to say that there is a variable in place for how many can be put out but it depends on the item and is influenced by a few other factors like material and skill level.

The other question when will they disappear is best answered by saying that yes there is a timer that will make them go away eventually even if they take no damage but it will often be set that you would not see it happen in game. So for most of the deployable items the timer will be set so long that we think that that item won’t be relevant to game play anymore.

13. Projectiles- Are they expendable? Do you eventually run out or is it unlimited? Do we have to craft more?
Musket Bullets and arrows are unlimited and free. So in the current testing we have found that it was better with this set-up. This could be altered if the need arose.

Other specialty projectile skills such as javelin cost material. So you have a choice of materials for the skill javelin.

For example an iron javelin will be very heavy, expensive but will do a lot of damage. So iron is probably not a practical material to use for javelins on a standard basis but it might be great to kill a boss or other special enemy.

The rest of the time it will more practical to use a material like birch that is cheap and common.

14. Are weapon enchants/particle effects on weapons in the game? That would be awesome.
Yes all the weapon and gear types have the capability of gem infusions. These items have particles. So the main gem effects will be visible using particle effects. Also when you do for example venom or fire damage on an enemy there will be a coinciding particle effect.

15. To certain enemies have vulnerabilities to different types of attacks?

Yes some enemies will be practically impervious to certain damage types but all things have their weaknesses. The trick is finding it.

16. Are there any buff abilities in the game?

There are some skills as well as consumable herbs and mushrooms that have a variety of buff effects.

17. Is there heals in the game? Also, is there some down time with out of combat healing?

This is sort of like the question above. There are some skills as well as consumable herbs and mushrooms that have different kind of healing effects. Some have small temporary and quick effects for combat situations while others are more powerful and are aimed at being used in down time situations.

18. Are there consumables in the game? Potions?

Yes! Mushrooms, herbs and fruits are located throughout the wilderness of Athereus. Two examples are: Kisom Plant that has a healing effect and the Meadowskull Mushroom that has a combat power buff effect.

19. Is there a level cap and a skill point cap?

Right now the level cap is set at level 60. This could easily be raised before or after release.

The skill points work a bit different. In short when you level you get skill points to place out to enhance your skills by either adding power to an existing skill or opening a new one. This requires a longer more in-depth explanation. So we will try and explain this more at a later time. In general the philosophy is to have a large and complex skill variety so that there is always a plethora of options to choose from no matter what level character you are.

Is there any reason for the 60 level cap? Why such a low limit, if any at all?
