Who is The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival?
First premiered in 2015, The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival was founded by local Kaneohe girl turned professional actor, Kimee Balmilero. While living in NYC and Los Angeles for 15+ years, Kimee fell in love with improv and sketch comedy. She studied at The Uprights Citizens Brigade and performed in Los Angeles with several comedy groups including the sketch team Drug Puppy. After making the decision to move back home to Hawaii, Kimee was certain: She didn't want to abandon comedy. So brainstorming began and BOOM...The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival was born!
The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival is brought to you by StoryU Arts, adivision of the 501(c)3 non-profit Bizgenics Foundation. The mission of StoryU Arts is to empower creative entrepreneurship.
What is The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival?
The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival is an annual two-day event featuring original comedy by local and off-island creators, plus live music and educational workshops geared towards writers, performers, and producers interested in a career in comedy.
Where is The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival?
The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lucky us! Friday October 21st at the Doris Duke Theatre in Kaka‘ako and Saturday, October 22nd at the Arts at Marks Garage in Chinatown.
Why is The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival?
Our main focus is to provide opportunities for Hawaii based funny folks and to showcase their work. Our aim is to help them bring their skills up to the next level! Our "Two Scoops Funny" Show at Arts at Marks Garage features the work of local writers exclusively. Our "Live in Honolulu" Show at The Doris Duke Theatre brings together local creatives mentored by visiting industry professionals. There's so much talent here in Hawaii and we do our best to nurture and celebrate it!
How is The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival Funded?
While The Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival is mostly volunteer based, we do have quite a few expenses to take care of:
- Special guest airfare/lodging/expenses
- Instructor/performer/production staff stipends
- Printing: shirts, stickers, programs, scripts, etc
- Venue & equipment rental
- Surprise fees (you know...all those things that might go wrong that you have to adjust your budget for.)
We love our sponsors, but our biggest support comes from you...our fans and audience. We do our best to keep costs low and are very frugal with our donations and sponsorships, but it’s paramount that the quality of the festival is always at its best. We can use all the help we can get. Any surplus will support the next festival as well as our yearly comedy programming, including Improv Hawaii, and our spring Comedy Camp for Kids.
CHECK OUT OUR 2017 HISF MERCHANDISE!
We are SUPER stoked about this year's designs. Besides our usual stickers and shirts, we've also added tote bags to the list. 'Cause who doesn't like the idea of putting an actual pineapple in your HISF pineapple tote bag?
Because of limited stock, merchandise is only available through our Festival Passes and Silver and Gold Sponsorships. Merchandise will also be on sale on show nights.
