Welcome to the Knights of Nine: The Lightning Knight, the first book in a planned ten book series. This Kickstarter campaign was created to help promote my first foray into self-publishing and hopefully get this book out into the world! I hope you enjoy the story, and thanks for stopping by the page!
We hit our goal in only 10 days!!!! This has been a humbling and awe-inspiring campaign so far, and I'm happy to announce that we have some exicting stretch goals to keep us going until the end of the project. These new goals will not only help me add some elements to the publishing process, but also unlock some awesom rewards! More about the different stretch goals below:
Our first stretch goal is at the $3,000 mark. Once we hit this, it will unlock a reward named Professional Artwork. This artwork will be availalbe to all backers (digitally, so you can print in any format). Getting professional artwork is pricey, but it will really enhance the book! The stretch goal of $3,000 is intended to help cover these costs and also give backers a wonderful new reward.
Our second stretch goal is at the $4,000 mark, and I'm happy to annouce that it will allow me to publish a fun and short novella about Whiskey Danger (Focusing on Roc, Yokel, and Po). This will be published digitally and be professionally edited (thus the need for the stretch goal). This Novella will help give a little more background about the world, Starfall City, and our characters - espeically given that the main book is from Oliver's perpsective.
Our second stretch goal is at the $5,000 mark, and I will announce the reward once we hit Stretch Goal #2. This is a huge stretch, and if we hit it, it will be a monumental achievement. I have something big planned for this goal, and I can't wait to reveal it!
The Lightning Knight follows Oliver Quartermaine, who is trying to navigate his life as a sixteen year old in his home city of Starfall. While trying to charm his crush, Rose, Oliver becomes embroiled in a plot by an unfriendly and secretive society who are trying to wreak havoc on his city. Together with his best friends Roc and Yokel, they embark on a series of adventures that will not only come to define them, but potentially change the world as they know it.
The book is structured rather uniquely. Each chapter is comprised of three individual scenes. The book itself is split up into two parts - part one is in first person point of view and part two is in third person point of view.
The Knights of Nine is intended to be a ten book series, each book, focusing on one of the titular Knights.
Oliver is the second child of the oldest and most powerful family in the South. With ancestors dating back before the founding of his home city, Starfall, his family has a rich history, due in part to their family business, smithing. Their weapons, armor, and other technological advances have not only shaped the world, but have propelled the family to a status only royalty could compare to. While his father may be known as the most celebrated inventor and smith in a generation, for Oliver there is something missing. Something inside him is sleeping, and he doesn't know if when it wakes, he'll have the courage to accept his destiny.
Roc is the resident king of the jocks at the Institute, and Oliver's best friend. Never the smartest, nor most forward thinking, Roc has a proclivity towards punching first and not bothering to ask the questions later. He lives with his uncle, a lowly hedge knight, and has never known a life of luxury or ease, but that's only ever fueled his desire to prove himself, especially in the Joust.
Yokel is the third of the trio that makes up Whiskey Danger, the nickname for our three friends who are closer than brothers. Smaller and skinnier than both Oliver and Roc, what Yokel lacks in social graces he makes up for in loyalty and intelligence. If there was anyone who knew exactly who he wanted to be and where he wanted to go, it was Yokel.
Rose comes from a lower noble house, is second in her class at the Institute, and an up and coming steward at the Shearson Library. She's never one to be a damsel in distress and won't ever let you forget that she can take care of herself. On the outside, she seems like a typical teenage girl, but there's much more to her than meets the eye.
The youngest member of the Quartermaine family, Reagan is whip-smart and often more trouble than she's worth, or so Oliver might think. While only a year and a half younger than her brother, Reagan can hold her own in any situation, and is often a voice of reason for her family and friends.
Ridhan comes from an old and powerful family, and is a rival to Oliver, insomuch as they are the same age and run in the same social circles. Known for his quick temper and quicker thinking, Ridhan is a force to be reckoned with, whether it be in the confines of school or beyond.
Po is the newest member of Whiskey Danger, a young pre-teen who acts as a squire to the team. He has a positive outlook and a big heart, and will do anything for his new friends. As someone who comes from nothing, this is an opportunity of a lifetime for Po to move up in the world - something that rarely comes along for a poor boy from the Narrows.
I've added a sample chapter of the book for you to read and see if my writing style matches your reading preference. This is chapter one of the book, so you get a great look into the beginnings of the story! You can find the sample chapter here: The Lightning Knight - Chapter One - Whiskey Danger
I've probably read this single chapter about 1,437 times, and while that might have been cause for getting sick of it, I still love reading it every time. I hope you find it enjoyable and let me know if you have any thoughts or questions!
About the Author
Hi! I'm Sean Valiente, and I'd like to sincerely thank you for stopping by my page. Writing this novel has been a dream of mine for years, but it wasn't until I got a push from my best friend that I put digital ink to digital paper and a wonderful story emerged. I'm originally from Maine, and moved down to the Boston area for college and never left. By day, I work as a Finance Director for a startup company, and by night, I'm tinkering with my story.
This book is a huge passion project of mine, and I can't wait to share it with the world.
About the Kickstarter Campaign
I set up this Kickstarter with a goal of $2,000. This amount will help not only cover some of the costs of publishing and editing, but also will help add some other goodies (like artwork, book cover illustrations , etc.)
The rewards are set up like most book kickstarters, with different tiers having the option to purchase the book outright (with some add-ons). The higher tiers are where we get some more unique and interesting rewards. These higher cost rewards have to do with having a direct impact in the writing itself - naming of towns, kingdoms, characters (minor and major), and even the option to name one of the titular characters of the series.
The other fun and unique reward is named "Scene Stealing" where I will work with you to create a scene in a future book - integrating it into the plot. I'm super excited about these rewards and am looking forward to possibly adding more as we think of them!
*If you are looking for multiple copies of the book, but don't want all the extra accouterments, you can shoot me a note through kickstarter and I can help you work something out!*
Risks and challenges
A few things about this project make it risky and at the same time risk-averse. For one, I keep tinkering with the story, which has delayed my editing process. But I'm 99% sure I'm done with that now, and the story is what it will be for all of the time. However, there still exists the small possibility that I don't meet my editing deadlines and thus publishing pushes back.
As far as the risks for the Kickstarter, while there is always the inherent risk of not hitting my goal, that won't deter me from publishing. It just means it's going to be a bit tougher to do so on my own and might delay the process a bit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
