Bluewater Creamery was born out of a love of ice cream and a passion for good food. After two years of serving up the local Guelph markets and festivals, we are now looking to get our business on wheels and raise $15,000 to help purchase an ice cream truck!
A weekend trip down Bluewater Highway sparked the idea for what would soon become Guelph’s first small batch ice cream company. And what began as an obsession with the Kitchen Aid mixer and a variety of fresh, local ingredients turned into a thriving family business with a loyal customer base.
This has been the most exciting season for us to date, as we are on the cusp of expanding our company’s reach. However, we have recently bumped up against our first roadblock.
According to the Milk Act, which was written more than 50 years ago, we are not allowed to sell ice cream away from the place of manufacture. Put simply, since we do not have a dairy license, we cannot distribute our ice cream away from our commercial kitchen — which means we cannot sell it at the markets and festivals around Guelph.
Despite having a health-inspected commercial kitchen with zero infractions and a product deemed completely safe for consumption, the unintended consequence of this outdated rule is that it is preventing us from growing our small business. Not only that, the cost of entry to acquire a Dairy license is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and buying permanent retail space can run even higher.
Bluewater Creamery needs an ice cream truck. That way we can be mobile while making our product and selling it from the same location — our truck!
At this stage of Bluewater’s existence, this is the only feasible way for us to move forward and we are asking for your help.
A donation made to Bluewater Creamery would also mean stimulating the local economy because you would be directly supporting the farmers and suppliers of fresh products that go into making our ice cream.
Each batch of our seasonal flavours is created with local and farm-fresh ingredients, the highest quality and specialty-sourced vanilla and of course, 100% Canadian Dairy.
As the seasons change, so do our flavours. We make every effort to give our customers a “farm to cone” experience at the local farmers markets and special events around Guelph and the KW area.

Ice cream is a timeless treat and it’s this very feeling of nostalgia that we want to share with our customers.
So with that said… Let’s get Bluewater Creamery on wheels!
Thank you for your support!

Risks and challenges
We are firmly dedicated to this endeavour and fully capable of delivering on our promises. We will always be transparent with our supporters regarding any challenges that present themselves. We will continue to engage with the Guelph community, keeping our customer base happy, maintaining our reputation as the best small batch ice cream company and providing our product at indoor markets around the city until our truck is up and running. We have allotted ample time for the process of purchasing our ice cream truck, and getting its wheels turning for the spring of 2017. There is always a chance that things do not go according to plan but we will make every effort to keep everyone posted with updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
