The Groundswell Players are fundraising $3500.00 to create, produce and perform an original show for the 2013 Philly Fringe Festival. Debuting on September 6th and running through September 21st, Go Long Big Softie will appear at the Torrent Collective in South Philadelphia. Formerly a South Philly boxing gym and 7UP bottling plant, the space will soon be home to Groundswell's latest invention.
After successful collaboration for last year's Fringe hit Hackles, Scott Sheppard teams up again with Mason Rosenthal [2012-13 LAB Fellow for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival]. With guidance from Charlotte Ford [creator of Live Arts hits Bang, CHICKEN, and Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl], Groundswell examines the comic and dramatic extremes of contemporary masculinity. Specific points of focus include America's nascent infatuation with the "bromance", the evolving effects of pornography on male sexuality, and those secret thoughts and feelings men experience but rarely say or explore.
Performed by Scott and Mason, the show will benefit from Charlotte's expertise as a devised theatre and clown artist. Her experience creating compelling, sophisticated pieces about femininity and sexuality concocts fruitful dissonance that will deepen our discoveries.
Risks and challenges
Making a devised theatre piece is an inherently risky process. We will be making decisions with designers up until opening night; we will write, rewrite, and rewrite again. This summer we create and rehearse. We will toss 95 percent of the material we generate in order to keep the best 5 percent.
We could start with a script, but instead we start with bodies in space, big ideas, and an unlimited imagination. Help us take another risk!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
