So what makes this game different?
- Giga -Voodoo
- Alien Biotech
- Organic Ships
- You play an ex-military criminal
- Guns, lots of guns.
The Zombie Squad is a Science Fiction Tabletop RPG set in the distant future. Humanity has reached the stars and has managed to annoy pretty much every sentient being out there. Now adrift in space far from home, the Human race fights a never ending battle to survive. But war takes its toll and resources are low, so the people in control decide they need a new strategy and turn to those criminals awaiting execution in military stockades.
You are an ex-military prisoner, yanked from your cold stone cell on death row and offered the choice to die by firing squad or die redeeming yourself for the good of humanity. With the worst equipment, the worse missions and a survival rate so low you are termed the walking dead, because officially you are. Your unit designation is Penal Squad 113, but with those Deaths Heads on your lapels you are known simply as THE ZOMBIE SQUAD.
The game will feature weird alien tech, derelict ships to explore, cybernetics and killer robots, lost planets and Space Pirates, yes Space Pirates! With hundreds of worlds and places to travel to.
The Game was originally released back in 2015 for free and was a massive success, with a thousand downloads a day on DriveThruRPG. Since then we have had some great reviews like this one
We admit we made mistakes with the early game as we were still working out how to use our word processors and art programs, but now that's all sorted we are gonna make a new version and add that to the rewards.
The original game without the improvements can be downloaded for free here
We will be using 2 systems for the game,
Version one - The Directors Cut.
This version will be a new and improved original, with a better layout and a few tweaks it will still use the same D20 system. This version will be available as a PDF with 20 being offered as a Hardback only on this Kickstarter.
Version two - The Death Row Edition.
This version will have all new art by Robert Last, Russell Goh, Jon Gibbons and Greg Taylor. It will have a cool layout and will use a tweaked version of the Powered by the Apocalypse Engine. The PbtA rules add an element of grittiness we feel works really well with the game.
The Characters in the Directors Cut will be developed in the same way as the original game. The real difference comes with the Death Row edition. We have kept most of the Character Creation elements from the original but the Death Row Ed will not be as 'crunchy'.
Each character will have to choose an origin (where they came from), a past military career and finally a crime. Each one will come with tags which the player can choose. These tags will give benefits to Moves. Once you have been enlisted into the battalion you are designated one of four positions based upon past experience.
The player can then choose a character type from the six available, each one has up to eight extra moves.
Gunslinger - The weapons expert. The Gunslinger has specialist moves like 2 gun mojo and Signature Weapon. To download the Gunslinger Beta Playbook click here
Booster - The Scout of the group with Moves like Tracker and Sniper.
Fixer - The Tech expert and Hacker of the group with moves like Demolitions and Adv Cybernetics. To download the Fixer Beta Playbook Click Here
The Witch - The wielder of Giga-Voodoo with the power to control or destroy electronics and cybernetics. Moves like Re-Code and Overload.
The Ronin - Expert at melee and Martial Arts the Ronin has specialist moves like Open Hand and Deflection.
The Cyborg - The Cyborg will be the sixth and final Character type, The Cyborg will be upgradeable with both Bio-Tech and Cyber Ware.
So what is the difference between the two editions I hear you ask, well the Directors Cut will have the same rules, same art etc. The only difference will be the fact that the document is a proper PDF with bookmarks etc and has a cooler layout.
The Death Row Edition will have a different System mechanic, will have new improved art through out, will have new aliens, weapons, galaxies and even a new background. It will still be about a bunch of criminals trying to survive really bad missions with very little support.
We are a very small group of gamers that have been producing mini RPG's for about a year. Our games have always been well received with most scoring between 4-5 stars on DTRPG. We are known for games like The Zombie Squad, The Wasteland Hack, Undeath, Delve and the recent and the very popular Pirate Hack.
We love creating very simple, very quick to prepare RPG's with interesting and unique settings.
So we have a few stretch goals which will become available as they are unlocked.
£2500 - Earth Controlled Space - This is a guide to the Hub and the few small planets that Earth controls. These small planets and colonies have over time, due to neglect and lack of funding, become lawless hives for smugglers and killers.
£2500 - The Zombie Squad Vs Cthulhu - A human colony have unearthed a strange monolith, communications have stopped except for a strange chanting "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." Your Squad has been sent to sort it out.
As a special to celebrate hitting the funding goal we will send everyone who has pledged £5 and above this mini campaign, which can be used for both the D20 and PbtA versions of the game.
£3000 - Dark Space - A guide on what exists in the dark places, with more information on the dreaded Void Stalkers, the planet eating verasquids and other horrors that live in the darkness.
£3500 - Vehicles - This will be a guide on Vehicles from Battlecruisers to planet hoppers and Grav Bikes to Hovertanks. With expanded rules on combat for ground and space.
£3500 - Be in the Game - If we reach £3500 we will endeavour to have every backer in the Death Row Edition, yes you will be a NPC, have a colony named after you, a gun, weapon even a ship with your name on it. So when you play or GM a game you can visit, shoot, pilot or even blow up your namesake!
£4000 - The Witches guide to Cybernetics - The Witches have the power to control electronics and cybernetic implants and technology, weaving their giga-voodoo to manipulate and destroy everything from Robots to Cyber-Pirates. This guide will go into detail on new cybernetic upgrades, new spells and Techno-Magical items.
More will be added if we go beyond £4000
All rewards will be fulfilled through DriveThruRPG.
Risks and challenges
We have already began producing the new art for the second edition and also converting the original into a fully functioning PDF. Everything is actually pretty straight forward thanks to already having a completed version of the game.
So other than Human error, alien invasion or our computers finally gaining sentience we foresee no real risks or challenges.
