About this project
THANK YOU! We made it to 60 backers, so every backer now receives:
A photo postcard of Jason Escape (photographed by Ted Fisher).
A surprise 3-minute mini-documentary (via download).
----> HELP US REACH OUR FINAL GOAL: $3,000. <----
If we succeed, every backer will also receive:
An official promotional poster (11" by 17") for the ESCAPE/ARTIST documentary -- signed by Jason Escape, the producer, and the director.
QUESTION: "Why do you want more backers?"
ANSWER: When we started the project, we had no idea if people would love the idea of the film as much as we did. We're finding out that people do -- and our plan is to learn from our audience as we go. We are not anything like a Hollywood production, so we can't host test screenings in a theater, with comment cards.
What we CAN do is engage with the people who are interested enough in the film to connect with it now. We are planning to open up the process of our production to our audience and to discover what they connect to in our material. A larger initial audience is what it takes to get that feedback, and to understand the potential of the film. We think this will allow us to make a better film.
QUESTION: "You made your initial $1,000 target. Why do you need more money?"
ANSWER: Our cost to go to Boston and stay there is about double that initial target. While we run a very streamlined production –– it really is just Karen and Ted making the film –– our real travel costs are a big hurdle. The film is going to involve sessions in three cities, and every dollar raised here will go into making those sessions happen.
We want you to be part of our team. Without you, our film cannot be made. THANK YOU! -- Karen and Ted
The result of that trip was a 15-minute documentary called "Hanging Downtown." You can see a trailer for that film here:
That documentary screened at Coney Island Film Festival, San Francisco Documentary Film Festival, Thin Line Film Festival and Winnipeg Real to Reel Film Festival. We think you'll like it, since those audiences did.
But there's more to tell. A lot more.
Since the first documentary, Jason has gotten married, expanded his act, and produced his greatest work to date: Baby Escape.
We want to go big and tell Jason's story in vivid color, with more music, more about Jason's life, more on Jason's performance, Jason's magic, Jason's concern for social issues. (And maybe even a glimpse of Baby Escape. Maybe.)
So, what are we offering as benefits if you support our first step toward the full-length Jason Escape story?
Well, the benefit we think you'll most enjoy is a download of the original 15-minute documentary. You will get that as soon as this Kickstarter campaign successfully finishes. Download it, watch it, and enjoy. You'll see Jason in action, learn how he started his performance work on the streets of Boston, and discover his philosophy on struggling to overcome a challenge.
We're also offering a chance to see the new film as soon as possible. We hope it will have a good run at film festivals -- but we believe that if you want to see it at home, we should provide that at the earliest date we can.
So, another benefit we're offering is a download of the new feature film -- as well as the full soundtrack for the new film. The music was a big part of the short documentary, and this time it will be even more important. We'll be working with great musicians -- and we want you to hear their work both in the documentary and as stand-alone music.
Help us get phase one underway: to start filming in April 2013.
That's where your help is needed. We want to visit Jason, once again, in Boston. We'll start filming the new feature-length documentary there … and we'll keep you up-to-date as our production progresses.
We know it isn't easy. But we'll see this film through from the first day of filming to screenings at film festivals. (Check out Ted's IMDB page and his filmography to see past projects he's completed.) And we want you to come along on the journey. Watch our original short doc and find out about Jason. Listen to the soundtrack -- while we're still editing the feature film. (We'll give backers a chance to see clips from the new film at that point, too.)
And then -- as soon as we can -- we want you to see the full feature.
Join us on this journey.
Risks and challenges
Our target date for providing the download version of the short "Hanging Downtown" is ... as soon as the Kickstarter successfully completes. We want you to see, enjoy, and talk about the film. We think it will make you want to be involved in the new, full-length feature.
As you can imagine, our date for providing other benefits (the soundtrack album and the download of the new feature-length documentary) is subject to the realities of filmmaking and film festivals. We've set our target dates above, and we'll keep you informed. But it is possible dates may move as the project develops. We'll do our best: we want you to see the film!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
