What is Raiders of Arcana?
Raiders of Arcana is a new, table top wargame and 28mm metal figure range, which attempts to re-spin traditional fantasy elements with a new twist. Games will take place between 2 or more opposing warbands typically with between 30 & 60 figures on each side.
What make Raiders of Arcana different?
With Raiders of Arcana, we wanted to take a lot of elements found in a traditional fantasy setting and combine them in a way that gives a different feel to the army composition. The warbands in Raiders are based around a culture, rather than a single race, and so can have units of Orcs, Elves and Dwarves within the same warband, with the culture dictating the type of armour and equipment available, as well as the look, feel and fighting style of the warband. We also intend that all units can contain both male and female warriors. Warbands will consist of small units, typically of around 6 figures, with a standard warband being around 8 units. A unit could be any one of the following:
- The warband leader, their standard bearer and personal guard
- A magic user and their bodyguard or acolytes
- A hero and up to 5 warriors
- A large, independent beast
- A pack of (typically 3) smaller beasts
What are we trying to produce?
Currently we have designs for the first 4 cultures and around 50 masters sculpted towards the warband sets from the first cultures. With the funding from this Kickstarter, we want to have the rest of the masters sculpted to complete the first 2 cultures and put all of those figures into production. We plan to introduce a further 2 cultures as stretch goals once our initial funding target is met.
Each culture will have a starter set and an expansion set of 4 units each, with the following composition :
- Leader, Standard Bearer & Retinue
- Magic user & acolytes or bodyguard
- 2 warrior units
- 2 Warrior units
- 2 Beast units
We are also in an early stage of production for a rule set to accompany the figure range, we will be pushing forward with the development and play testing of these rules and will be making a downloadable version of the rules available to all backers as soon as they are ready.
The models shown in the following pictures are either painted or inked versions of the pre-production figures, or the masters. In many cases we have had the first 2 figures of a unit sculpted and will be using the funds raised to complete the units.
During the Kickstarter campaign we will also be launching a Raiders of Arcana website, with more details, background and history of all the cultures planned.
In the lands that border the great ice fields, tribes of barbarians live on the vast herds of animals that migrate across its unending surface. Constantly fighting the elements, as well as each other, this is a brutal region where only the strong survive; fighting skills are much admired by all the races and the prowess of individual warriors has created a culture where conflicts can be settled by single combat between champions.
An Untamed Kingdoms warband fights with a bestial ferocity, using the power of their charges as well their fighting agility.
A fertile, arable land of many water courses allowed the barbarian tribes to settle and farm effectively freezing out the warrior classes. Bereft of battles to fight these warriors soon turned to banditry, often raiding the farmsteads, soon the farmers were forced to employ other warriors to defend their homes against the bandits. In time, this lead to powerful warlords rising up to carved out their own lands, relegating the farmers to serfs. Escavalon is a land of many kingdoms, each is a hierarchy of feudal lords fighting enemies from within as well as each other.
Escavalon warbands are usually armoured in plate and mail and equipped with crushing weapons and armour piercing missiles.

Risks and challenges
There will be 2 major steps to delivering the project, the completion of the master sculpts, and then the production of the figures. We have been working closely with our sculptor on the concept figures leading up to launching the campaign and are confident he will be able to complete all of the masters to the required standard with inside the time frame set out. We have chosen to have example figures from each unit sculpted before launch not only so we have some actual figures to show, rather than just concept work, but also to reduce the risk in getting the final masters in a state we are happy with.
Battlezone Miniatures has handled all our figure production in house for a number of years, so we have a good understanding of how long it will take us to put the figures into production and the costs involved.
It could be the case that things go wrong, for example masters not being to our liking, or getting damaged in the moulding process and should this happen we will ensure we communicate any specific delays to backers affected and offer the choice of changing the chosen units or
warbands if the delay in unacceptable.
For the rewards containing painted figures, all the painting will be outsourced, so we have allowed additional time for and limited the number of these rewards (as we obviously have to get the figures produced and delivered to the painter before he can begin work)
Our aim with this campaign relating to the ruleset is to get an early beta set of rules to all backers as soon as possible, so we can get as much feedback from anyone willing to help with the play testing and development of the rules.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
