Len Graham is one of the foremost authorities on traditional singing in Ireland (www.storyandsong.com). I met him in 2008 while he was on tour in the Midwestern US. He was quite sick but soldiering through his tour none-the-less. Knowing I was a singer myself, a mutual friend of ours suggested I go with him to alleviate the discomfort of traveling alone and on public transit while ill. I thought it a good opportunity so we hired a car and off we went! I sang between his sets to give him time to recover and by the end of the tour I was singing along to most of his songs (and sick myself!). We've had two tours since--on the East Coast and Pacific Northwest--and have amassed a collection of live recordings that we'd like to release on our 2012 tour of the Midwest, which brings our friendship full circle. We share much in our love of traditional singing and the relationship that has sprung from that is reflected in Len's personal history with singers like Eddie Butcher, Joe Holmes, John Campbell and his wife Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin. The generational gap that exists between us is, in many ways, the same situation Len found himself in with the likes of Eddie, Joe and John (among others). Needless-to-say, I have learned so much from the experience. In Two Minds is a collaborative recording that represents "the one tradition," the integration of music, song and dance. It's rather seamless--he sings and I sing the ends of his lines or the chorus and vice versa, he lilts and I dance a few sean-nós steps, I play a tune and he gets the spoons out. Simple is, simple as! The funds raised from this KS project will go toward the cost of editing and mastering these recordings, organizing and designing the album lay out with liner notes, pressing several hundred copies, and covering the promotion costs needed to get the album reviewed and to various radio stations, festivals, etc. This is no easy task as neither of us have support from a record label and as full-time musicians we haven't the expendable income to pay for it ourselves! Len has the added financial pressure of marrying off his son shortly (congrats, Len!). Thank you for your consideration and support!
