About this project
Welcome to the exciting world of Ace Kilroy!
In 1937, the United States government has learned two disturbing facts: One, that supernatural monsters--i.e., vampires, werewolves--are indeed real, not just figments of imagination. Two, the Third Reich, in preparing to start World War II, is trying to take control of these monsters and turn them to the side of the Nazis, making Hitler's plan for global domination unstoppable.
President Franklin Roosevelt commissions soldier of fortune, WW I veteran and all-around adventurer Ace Kilroy to head to Transylvania, where there are rumors of a real-life Dracula, and stop whatever nefarious plot is being hatched!
Ace will go on other missions (if he survives his first, of course) to face Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, sea monsters, zombies, giant killer spiders, and many, many more. Ace Kilroy will feature adventure, horror, thrills, comedy, political intrigue, and even romance, as Ace tries to rid the world of evil.
Ace Kilroy is the creation of Rob Kelly (that's me!) and Dan O'Connor, who met at the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Art and have maintained careers as artists and writers ever since. Dan and I have an affinity for the 1930 and 1940s Americana, as well as a love of the classic newspaper strips, like Steve Canyon, Dick Tracy, and Buz Sawyer. After meeting up at the 2010 New York Comic Con, we decided to collaborate on a project that would fuse all of our interests and talents into one (hopefully) entertaining package.
Ace Kilroy will feature a new black and white strip every day, with an extra-large color supplement on Sundays, just like those strips of old. Each day's strip will appear on AceKilroy.com, where you can access every previous strip, learn more about the characters, read what some critics have said about it, and sign up to become a member of Ace's Allies, the super-secret fan club.
Dan and I would love nothing more than to spend the next several years--decades--chronicling the adventures of Ace Kilroy. So while the strip will be available, for free, every day, we are starting this Kickstarter effort in the hopes we can raise enough money to accomplish several goals:
1)Pay us both just enough so that we can work on the strip for the next couple of months and not be losing money in the process (i.e., taking time away from other, paying jobs)
2)Raise enough money to start collecting the strips in trade paperback form
3)Buy online and print ads, as well as make appearances at local comic book conventions, to get the word out!
Ace Kilroy launches on Monday, October 31, and will feature a new strip every day; day in, day out. Over the next 45 days during this Kickstarter campaign, you'll be able to see a new strip every day, as well as the kind of commitment we are bringing to the project.
Dan and I have a crazy dream that two people can create something of quality, put it out there, and enough people will find it and want to support it. We have many, many Ace Kilroy stories we want to tell, so please help us get the strip off to a good start!
Thanks for reading this, and please support Ace Kilroy!
"If Indiana Jones stumbled into an old Universal monster flick by way of the first season of TV’s Wonder Woman (you know, the awesome one), the result would be something like Ace Kilroy. I love this strip! It harkens back to a time of decoder rings and Saturday morning serials without getting bogged down in nostalgia. The storytelling is brisk and clean, the jokes work, and Rob and Dan have a clever knack for revisionist history. Very good stuff."--April Snellings, Rue Morgue
"Rob Kelly and Dan O'Connor's ACE KILROY reads like the aftermath of a tornado in a comics shop, an insane shuffling of STEVE CANYON and THE TOMB OF DRACULA. Nazis, spies, femme fatales, traitors, tentacles, adventure, horror! Chronicling the adventures of the eponymous US op (who looks intriguingly like Warren William, in the role he never got to play), the daily black-and-white online just-like-in-the-olden-days strip will be capped each week with a color Sunday supplement. You don't need a decoder ring to know that this is going to be GOOD."--Richard Harland Smith, MovieMorlocks.com
"ACE KILROY is smart, evocative fun that hits the right spot!
Full of fast-paced action and wistful nostalgia, this online daily serial -- courtesy of Rob Kelly and Dan O'Connor -- is intelligent, fresh comic-making in its own right. Think Alex Raymond's SECRET AGENT X-9 meets Dashiell Hammett's SAM SPADE meets Lucas/Spielberg's INDIANA JONES. Toss in Bram Stoker's bloodsucking vampire DRACULA and a dash of Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD for good measure, and you'll have an idea of what ACE KILROY has to offer. C'mon. With a mix like THAT, how could they possibly go wrong?
(Oh, and did we mention Nazis feature in it, too?)" --Dan Hunter, TheTerrorTrap.com
"What a great idea! A daily online comic strip (with a Sunday color installment!), Ace Kilroy is about a hard-boiled special agent who battles the supernatural in a noir landscape of the 30s and 40s. Think of the daily adventure strips that we used to cut out of the newspapers and paste into scrapbooks when we were kids…now put in your favorite monsters!
It’s not just the novelty of the daily strip that makes Ace Kilroy special; Dan O’Connor’s artwork is fluid and pleasing, always setting the right tone while Rob Kelly’s story moves briskly in unexpected ways. The two obviously share a great deal of knowledge and love for the genres in which they’re working!
If this one were being printed in the papers back when I was a kid, I would definitely have a scrapbook filled with yellowed clippings of Ace Kilroy’s exploits. This could be the ultimate adventure serial for the Monster Lover."--Mike Howlett, The Weird World of Eerie Publications
