The free version is online for you to enjoy ❤

Do you use a flat screen television, a projector or a tablet as your table top gaming surface?

Let's build a browser based engine for digital table top gaming with living battle maps and animated assets.

FEATURES LIST

Map Assembly

  • Create a library of resources, with no server upload.
  • Assemble digital tabletop maps from any assets a modern browser supports (video, gifs, jpgs, pngs, pdfs, mp3s, oggs, etc, etc).
  • Elements animate, and toggle play & pause when clicked.
  • Drag and drop, scale and rotate, snap against each other, any elements on the field.
  • Control layers and overlay assets upon the map.  Add items from your library, or click and drag them in from the computer.
  • No file size limits (kb or resolution) barring what your computer or device can handle.

Map Transport and Storage

  • Save map state to your local drive or to a cloud account and load it later on.
  • Make map modules and store them via cloud.
  • Users will be able to share links to map modules (maybe auto load).

Map Use

  • Select quad or hex grid style.
  • Auto scaling grid for television screen size (select your screen size and get the grid size you need).
  • Attempt to auto scale map from input (what was the map made for, what size surface are you using).
  • A new fog of war system.
  • *NEW* Integrated http://improved-initiative.com for on table initiative tracking

Sustainability & Transparency

  • License for Life is for as long as the service is up.
  • License for Life gives you access to what will be the only planned membership tier for the service.
  • Cloud services will be free within 3rd party limits (Google!) but resold packages will be available for map module storage.
  • Full featured app will be a Patreon supported service for those without a License for Life.
  • The License for Life will be attached to your user account on the DMGE and will require you to login to the service to access it.

Area of Effect and Line of Sight Templates

Freshly cut LoS and AoE Templates!
Freshly cut LoS and AoE Templates!

These beautifully simple pieces are designed and cut in house!

15 foot cube template
15 foot cube template

Geared for Game backers receive:

  • Two 6 inch or "30 feet" Line of Sight templates
  • One 12 inch or "60 feet" Line of Sight template
  • One 3x3 inch or "15 foot" cube template
  • One 6 inch or "30 foot" cone template
  • One 3 inch or "15 foot" cone template
  • One 2 inch or "10 foot radius" circle template
  • One 4 inch or "20 foot radius" circle template
  • One 6 inch or "30 foot radius" circle template

Now you will always know exactly how big the fireball is.

Numbered Base Tokens

This is a 2 inch base with the number 1 in the corner.
This is a 2 inch base with the number 1 in the corner.

Set your miniatures on numbered clear bases when forming groups of the same creatures.
Note:  They're exactly sized, however the vinyl mat in the above image has ripples in it.

Each Token of my Affectation package includes:

  • 15 one inch (Small/Medium)
  • 5 two inch (Large)
  • 4 three inch (Huge)
  • 3 four inch (Gargantuan)

Since we hit the $5k stretch, I've increased the number of large, huge and gargantuan tokens by 1 to their current listed numbers.

From 1 inch to 4 inch.
From 1 inch to 4 inch.

Note: These are a prototype cut.

Initiative Tracker

The 13" (including base) tall initiative tracker uses 3"x1" polycarbonate (clear plastic) tabs you can write upon with wet erase markers (Crayola felt markers work great).

The tower has 17 staggered spaces for any of the included 22 tabs to be inserted and because they're clear you can be sure this beauty will light up nicely under projector or from beneath with flatscreen illumination.

Backers pledging $120 will receive this unit along with the templates and tokens.

STRETCH GOALS

Because every Kickstarter has stretch goals.  Italicized means achieved.

$5,000 : Range Finders and AoE markers

Leave the counting to the computer.
Hold a button, click and drag to quickly calculate how many 'feet' away a target is based on the grid size.  Select a template such as a line, cone, cube or radius to figure an area of effect on the fly.

Leave the shape in play as a marker and delete them when you're done.

$5,750 : Drawing on the map

Track hit points, initiative, flight trajectory, and more just by doodling on the map as you play.

Provide the ability to write and draw on the map and save out the drawings as part of the map configuration.

Note:  This isn't going to save drawings into videos and it won't support animation.  It saves the drawings as an overlay.

$6,400 : Game Master View

Game masters get a separate window where they can erase or paint the fog of war, move, add or remove assets and update the player view when finished.

$7,600 : Maplists, music and sounds

Set up a list of maps for fast switching on hotkey or menu selection by game master.

Make a list of music so each map has its own playlist of songs.

Make a list of sounds so a forest can have chirping birds, buzzing bees and war drums if that's what you need.

Save out the configuration to local text file or map module.

$9,500 : Animation and Sound Triggers

Trigger the animation of a sprite and the playing of a sound effect when an asset is clicked.

Your hero steps on a tile triggering a trap!  The trap animates, spikes erupt from the floor and the sound of stabbing flesh plays as blood spatters about, overlaid upon the animated map underneath.  It's clear that you failed the save.

$12,000 : Sprite Sheet Import

Import a sprite sheet and have the system will process it into an animated asset.

What is a sprite sheet?  A strip of drawings that make up an animation, is called a sprite sheet.
Sprites are the graphics that make up the animations in most game engines.

$12,000+ : Premium Content

I will hire a student from the local digital art school to produce premium living battle maps we vote for.

We support a student and get some sweet maps in the process!

Q&A

Will there be line of sight and lighting?

Lighting and line of sight are features I intend to implement but am not promising in the development timeline.

This is not a stretch goal, but something I will get working after other priorities are addressed, specifically, the game master view.

I have studied enough examples of how it works that I know I can implement it; it's just a matter of time.

You keep alluding to a platform.  What is that?

I don't want to give away too much but what I intend to do is provide folks away of generating line of sight templates for various maps and saving them out so they can be shared between maps.

So in short, if you load up a map from the DMGE, you may have some other pieces of data available, as produced by other game masters, to make your gaming experience that much better.

This goes for soundscapes and much more.

While the system will not require you to upload anything, this isn't to say you won't be able to to.

Is this a market?

No.  It is to be a catalogue as developed by gamers for gamers.

I'm not aiming to make money from resources; I'll let the artists do that.

Will the system allow remote control from a tablet?

It operates on any device with a browser and I will do my best to make it tablet friendly.

The game master view stretch goal has been hit and will be implemented.

Will the system support touch screen?

Yes.  It's a web app and I do my best to keep mobile interactions in check.

Will it interact with ePawn or other NFC technology?

Not natively at this time but I'd love to eventually incorporate all sorts of technology.  Baby steps as they say.

How is this different from Roll20?

It doesn't connect to a remote server save to start the app in your browser.
Once you have it cached, don't clear your cache (any remote features won't work if you're offline).

It doesn't require you to make an account, upload resources, buy resources, and won't have any rule sets built in.

It's a local tabletop system, not a remote tabletop system.

But it's online?

It's a website that will load javascript.  Outside of that, I assure you there will be no need for remote connection.  I don't want your traffic.

Running it in a browser gives us all the capabilities (and issues) of a browser.  Graphics engine, file system, etc, etc, etc.Cross browsers is easier to develop for cross operating systems.
Let's leave that heavy lifting to their respective parties.

Everyone's got a browser in their back pocket, everything is now a tabletop.

Will there be a dice roller?

No.  Roll your own dice.

Are you a really hoopy frood who knows where his towel is?

No.  I'm more like the guy who had his house bulldozed.

What kind of updates can I (meaning, you) expect?

How about daily?  How about multiple in one day?
Be it just text saying what was done that day, or a video showing off new features, there's nothing a developer loves more then showing off their work; especially when the developer knows that the recipients are as eager and passionate as the developer is.

What's with the shipping fees!?

I know right?

It's just over twenty bucks to ship to anywhere in the states, and just under fourty to ship overseas, and that's with a 5% discount.

Add to this the cost of packaging and taxes and in some cases I'm actually over the flat fee being charged.

I can confidently say it won't be a major issue, but in short, the shipping fees are accurate and more then fair.

If I were a large company who shipped a lot of packages each month, I could expect a good discount and pass the savings on, but at this point in my career as a purveyor of fine tabletop accessories and software, I get no love.

Risks and challenges

None.

After building the small version within a few days, and conducting a whole lot of discovery, I'm confident in my delivery of the software.

Having vetted the manufacturing process for the tabletop accessories, the logistics of delivery for the units will be smooth.
